Bans and rocking Saints

144

Celtic’s email to those who had their season tickets suspended yesterday, in the Green Brigade section, alleges a series of incidents, including “intimidating and threatening behaviour towards staff” on multiple occasions, “forcing open fire exits to permit access to individuals without tickets” at Fir Park, a list of pyrotechnic and banner violations and several other transgressions, which they hold the Green Brigade responsible for.

Consequences extend beyond staff wellbeing and Uefa fines.  Last season, Glasgow City Council’s Safety Advisory Group, who licence the stadium to open for spectators, wrote with “concerns regarding the conduct of certain spectators located within the north-east curve area”.  As a result, Celtic have to report to the Safety Advisory Group after every home game.  Hoped for progress has not been made.

The Uefa fines mount up but alone were not going to move the dial.  Behaviour towards staff, forcing open gates and the Council’s safety certifiers are absolutes.  No one should be threatened at work without their employer taking appropriate action.  Organised groups of people cannot try to open gates to allow additional number in.  The Safety Certificate is non-negotiable.  Inevitably, Celtic had to be prodded into action.

I witnessed none of this (apart from the pyro and banners, obviously) and it could be a different group of lads behind everything.  Talks will inevitably take place to resolve the issue; we can hope.

St Mirren are third in the league and absolutely rocking.  They got the St Johnstone manager the sack at the weekend and only went behind at Ibrox after a red card and a penalty kick.  We are not short of big games but this could be a significant one come the end of the season.  An early goal for the good guys tonight would be very welcome.

The board lies. If you don’t believe that then can I remind you of the time the fans were labelled antisemitic by one Ian bankier. That also involved the flying of Palestinian flags.

  2. The emergence of Paul67’s sudden desire to limit conversation on the Middle East should tell you what the mood music is really about inside Celtic….

in a world full of cameras and mobile phones i am struggling to find any footage of gates being opened, staff abused and intimidated, threatening behaviour, breaches of security, and so on and so forth.

The footage you find on the Internet is that of the police holding gates closed, after the game. Not before.

They own a stadium. An increasingly dilapidated one. They don’t care. They know we’ll turn up in large numbers regardless to support the team.

    Goes both ways.

In my view sport and politics should never mix. I don’t know what these fans are even getting out of it.

“I don’t think many of them understand what it means.

“It’s very clear when I talk to Celtic fans that they know nothing about the conflict. They just see it on TV.

“From experience I’d say the vast majority of them have no idea what is going on over there.

Who actually cares what Sammy Stein thinks? Typical zionist.

The statement below it, US House speak, Johnston, is even more cringe: “As a Christian, the Bible teaches very clearly, we are to stand with Israel.”

This is clear as day a Christian extremist point of view. People who use such rhetoric are typically branded terrorists.

  22. he Green Brigade have hit back at Celtic and claimed the board have SHAMED the club after banning the group.

On Tuesday night Parkhead chiefs told around 200 members of the section their season tickets have been suspended until further notice due to “repeated incidents of unacceptable behaviour” with the shut out beginning during the Scottish Premiership clash with St Mirren. Record Sport understands Parkhead powerbrokers have taken the action following further problems with the Celtic ultras during the visit to Easter Road to face Hibs.

But the fan group insist that the ban comes as a result of their support for Palestine amid the conflict in Israel. The ultras held up banners and flags saying ‘Free Palestine’ with a second saying ‘Victory To The Resistance!!’ in the stands following the start of the conflict and defied a warning from the club by displaying Palestine flags during the Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid – which looks set to incur a UEFA sanction.

A statement from the fan group read “In recent weeks, Celtic supporters have proudly stood in solidarity with the Palestinian people, while the PLC board a position closer to the far-right British government, with similar attempts to censor and sanction Palestinian solidarity. As the death toll in Gaza nears 10,000, including almost 4,000 children – the PLC board have shamed Celtic Football Club with their conduct.

“It is undeniable that the sanctions imposed against those affiliated with the Green Brigade are a result of the group’s unapologetic solidarity with Palestine. The sanctions applied, most notably collective bans, are evidently unfair; bereft of policy, process and communications with individuals wrongfully being punished before receiving any allegation, any evidence nor any right of defence.

While we expect any fair-minded person will see through the flimsy litany of allegations (shamefully attempting to use fan media and national press to do bidding on their behalf) there are some which we would like to address.

“While fans remain unjustifiably banned, with hundreds hugely out of pocket for the upcoming trip to Madrid, and while the PLC board is shamefully positioned on the wrong side of history, we encourage all concerned to voice your displeasure to those within the club who are responsible for these decisions and sanctions.”

“Finally, we are hearted by the overwhelming message of support from other Celtic fans, fan groups and fan media as well as from people from around the world who are following this story. While we may be absent from matches, we encourage all fans everywhere to fly the flag for Palestine.”
