Berlin to Lisbon

829

A game against Union Berlin, from the second tier of German football, four days before our Champions League qualification campaign gets underway sounds like perfect preparation.  Union will be better than any opposition we have or will play since defeat in Turin last month and they will be miles ahead of our Champions League second qualifying round opponents.

Having to play six instead of last season’s four games to qualify for the group stage has cost Celtic ‘lucrative’ preseason friendlies.  I am sure those charged with the task of balancing the books at Celtic Park (we always pay our bills) will be less than entertained by this, and for many supporters, if feels important that we face Real Madrid or Inter Milan preseason, but the summer time is all about qualifying for the Champions League.  There are five weeks between Celtic’s opening qualifying game and the first leg of the play-off round.  This extra preparation time should ensure we are fitter and ready.

Legend has it that competitive football in July inevitably leads to a drop in form late in the season but legends are not always reliable.  Last year Basel entered Champions League qualification at the same stage Celtic will next season, and next week they become the first Swiss team to play competitive European football in May ever.  Apoel Nicosia entered at the same stage in 2011 and became Cyprus’ first qualifier for the Champions League quarter final last year.

The Champions League final of 2014 will be held in Lisbon, the first time the city has hosted Europe’s top game since………. you know when.  There are 1730 miles between Berlin and Lisbon, or 10 months, if you prefer.  Preparations are already underway.

sort out the real trouble and corruption in scottish football – dont use holding a flare and adding colour and atmosphere to a football match as an excuse to be seen to be even handed.

    discuss any alleged fighting outside.

    discuss pitch invasions.

half a dozen chairs broken in any stadium which should have safe standing areas

    deserves some comment.

lighting flares – even those taken up mountains by those bear grills eejits who might need to cost the tax-payer a fortune should a helicopter be required – isnt worth the brain time.

    ………….

    YOU ARE THE PROBLEM

Flares are illegal in Football grounds for a reason, they are dangerous and could kill someone with COPD or Asthma.

Seats were broken, if you don’t want to sit at a game, theres a simple solution, don’t go to games at all seated stadiums.

The Zombies add colour and atmosphere to a football match, as do the fans of Lazio, Chelsea and you.

Get a grip, its not about you. You are not a better Celtic fan than anyone else who goes to the games. In your head you are, but whats inside your head is pretty frightening going by some of your posts.

greenjedi, the man who twice demanded Paul67 to give us access to Peter Lawwells telephone on these very pages, is frightened by whats going on in other peoples heads… I’ve seen it all now.

    Now THAT is naughty

    But brilliant!

  4. Agree with Phil MacG and his condemnation of supporters who ‘intentionally damage’ facilities at football grounds and who also endanger other supporters by randomly setting off flares and popping smoke. In my youth in North Belfast such wanton ‘anti social’ behavior would have ensured you got to meet Mr. Hurley stick very quickly. Once met never forgotten and the chances are you wouldn’t do the same thing twice.

  5. Why not be more efficient when adding to the ambience by setting fire to the seating?

wtf did i say that i was a better celtic fan ?

give one example – just one

whats pretty frightening thats inside my head – give just one example.

you are comparing flares with sectarianism, bigotry and fascism with lighting flares to support your argument. You could have just mentioned TIFOs being okay or similar.

have a wee word with guy who runs the logic dept in your head.

    i stand corrected by HT.

fair enough, in enclosed spaces, flares are a problem.

btw, i dont have any flares.

I have been to a few youth games at Firhill, i have not seen any evidence of broken seats myself

The writer of the article in Etims hopefully will be able to make his claims stand up

  8. trad 88

So i could complain. Now if I asked for his home address you’d have a point.

Major difference in complaining and commiting criminal acts which anyone who takes a flare/smoke bomb inside a football stadium or break seats does. Thats not even taking into account that someone could be very badly hurt or killed due to their actions.

It’s not all about you either.

A bit of Celtic light relief.

What player would you have loved to see in the hoops? Doesn’t have to be the most famous players just one you would have sold your granny to see at Celtic park.

    Marco van Basten for me.

    ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

In December 1954 a Polish gentleman by the name of Czeslaw Muchiewski, who lived in Glasgow, happened to meet a fellow Eastern European in Marks & Spencers in Sauchiehall Street. The stranger was a footballer, and was in Glasgow to play a friendly against Scotland.

He asked Muchiewski what footballers in Scotland earned, and Muchiewski also told him about Celtic – who had won the double the previous season. The stranger was very interested, and intimated that he was a Roman Catholic and was considering defecting from his homeland which was ruled by the Communists.

The stranger turned out to be the most renowned player of his generation, who had happened to play in the World Cup final just a few months previously, and who went on to score 700 goals in 705 competitive matches!

    The ‘stranger’?

    Ferenc Puskas!

Puskas of Celtic certainly has a ring to it!

  11. I went to Motherwell once and my seat was borken when I arrived to sit on it.

I called the nearest steward who did nothing except shrug his shoulders. I then went to fetch the nearest policeman. I wanted it recorded that the seat was broken when I arrived. I was in early and the stand wasn’t full. It was clear the seat was broken at a previous match. I think it was around 10 years ago. Didn’t want charged for the seat or banned for being accused of breaking it.

This would be the sensible option if you arrive at your seat and it is broken. I was given no alternative seat and had to squeeze into the seats my mates had beside me for the match. Safety? Police and steward scratched their head when I said where do I now sit? I honestly thought they were going to eject me at one point for the crime of having a broken seat through no fault of my own!

At fir park on Sunday in the rear upper stand a flare was let off at the start of the second half,a young lad about six or seven had to be checked over by a paramedic, quite scary for him and his dad,no place for flares if it causes other fans distress

As for players I’d like to have seen in a Celtic jersey,Brazilian legned Socrates

  14. The Moon Bhoys on

Johnny Russell – thats who I’d like to see in a Celtic strip – and the sooner…

JR would fit Celtic like a glove, just like BJH fitted in when he signed up and we had Sutton and Larsson as our main strike force, although obviously a different type of striker.

  15. The Winton Arms Hotel

worked down in Kilwinkie for 18 months..3 or 4 were refused service in WA due to the fact 1 of the crowd had a hint of green on…the fact he was a blue nose and high up in the masons were not enough to allow him to be served…

from your reply to mickbhoy1988 – “what do you do to contribute to the atmosphere at CP ?”

    frightening logic?

“half a dozen chairs broken in any stadium which should have safe standing areas”

They don’t have safe standing areas, now I agree that there should be, but not to the extent that I’d try and justify criminal damage by someone.

  18. It might be an idea on arrival in a little used section of a stadium to test your seat by sitting on it.

If it passes that test do it again with your pal on your lap.

Give them something to talk about.

  19. I would imagine if, a couple of years back before they died, Lenny stated that Rangers at that point had a huge influence on the judicial panel then the press would have been full, for days on end, of churnalists stating how outragous such an accusation would be.

We’d hear daily how our judicial panels are among the best judicial panels in the world but occasionally honest mistakes happen but these things even themselves out.

I’m sure this will be all over the papers tomorrow.

We could do with flares under the seats in ole sect114

Then we could just fire the moaners and begrudgers, the Sami-haters and the Forrest-haters into the ole Dalmarnock Road, and the rest of us can be left to watch the game in peace.

Lets have TWO of us make a complaint to Vincent Lunny that Kenny Shiels is bringing the game into disrepute with his controversial inflammatory statements regarding all things Celtic, that will work won’t it……………

  23. Celtic are monsters. Sheils wouldn’t be able to walk through Glasgow safely if he said Neil Lennon should be manager of the year. The monsters appear to be of the zombie variety.

Poor reporting or a nutter of a manager.

    I would suspect both!

  24. 16 roads - Neil Lennon walks on water. on

Apparently it takes a considerable degree of skill to be able to smash one of those plastic seats.

I am told that a mix of good timing and power is essential. The seat is first balanced upon with both feet, the vandal jumps, then the seat has to be caught correctly on it’s way back up,with both feet.If it is missed, the vandal will end up jumping down heavily on solid concrete

It’s a nonsense anyway, and you could end up doing more damage to yourself.

Siniša Mihajlović – Would liked to have seen him playing for Celtic.

  28. Barca might well be playing Bayern tonight, but I will be tuning in to CTV to cheer on the young Hoops in the YC Final!

    HH!!

  29. Imagine the furore if Neil had come out with comments like Shiels…

Looks to me like this moron is either applying for, or has already been offered, the Sevco job.

  30. I still can’t get my head roon this wan – Sammi – Celtic player of the year !!!

He played in six CL games and was a stand out. Cap doffed.

Now, what about the other what…42 games ?

Oh, I forgot he scored a cracking winner at home v’s Aberdeen.

The way I view Celtic from a playing perspective….only three of the current

1st team would get a game in my CELTIC team – Vic67 – GH – JF.

Watt and McGeouch(spelling) are being held back from progressing imo.

Anyway…to cut a long story short…Vic67 oot of the SCF. That’s scary imo.

I think I would be right in saying that Kayal is also oot ? I might be wrong

    there. Hopefully.

If ye take Vic67 oot the midfield then yer left wi feck all imo.

Joe (The Ghost) Ledley – KC(plays when he feels like it imo) – Charlie Muldini(lol)

Dylan and Rogic ould be playing if it was my call. But then…their no in the kleek yit.

Rogic looks like the box 2 box player that JL was before he arrived here.

What has happened to JL – is the very same as what happened to Paul Hartley

when he arrived – 14 months before we got a game oot him because he was badly

managed by WGS – who was in the process of emptying the stadium at that time – now Neil looks like he’ll complete the job. I wonder if they had a bet-on to see who could empty it 1st :)
