Blatter Ad hominem, Hampden, Thompson

819

Rumours circulated last week that is was Sepp Blatter who leaked the million or so emails to The Sunday Times, allowing them to uncover previously hidden payments between Fifa delegates at the time of the Qatar 2022 vote.  That looks fanciful in the face of Blatters tub-thumping, that criticism of the voting process is motivated by racism.

The motivation behind The Sunday Times is irrelevant, Fifa is either corrupt or not.  Blatter is indulging in the ancient art of Ad hominem, rejecting a claim not on its own merits, but on an irrelevant facet of the person making the claim.  Sony, Adidas and others have led the way is asking for proper oversight of Fifa to protect their brands being damaged by association.  This is all very well but by postponing any disclosure until after the forthcoming World Cup, Fifa have years to allow sponsor angst to dissipate.  Expect nothing to change.

What a fascinating wee story that the SFA are considering leaving Hampden to Queens Park to maintain and ‘fill’ with a few hundred spectators each game.  If this is a bargaining position to force Queens into cutting a generous deal, fair enough.

In the event the SFA decide to move away from Hampden, it’s worth keeping an eye on the stadium.  Those who appear intent on driving Newco Rangers into liquidation could do with a spare stadium in Glasgow, just in case the current owners of Ibrox do not succumb to manipulation.

On the subject of that lot, Dundee United’s Stephen Thompson’s playing a blinder. Not only is he cherry-picking their youth talent but he’s also raised the inconvenient fact – Newco Rangers is a two year old football club. Follow the money on this one.

Well done to BBC Alba and Alex O’Henley for the outstanding Jock Stein documentary last night.  It’s difficult to add much to the Stein story after all these years but they managed to do so. The level of detail contained therein was remarkable, and it was nothing short of astonishing that we heard first-hand testimony on Jock playing for Blantyre Vics.

If you’re short of a Father’s Day gift, Tommy Gemmell, Bertie Auld and John Hughes will be signing copies of their books at the Celtic Store in Argyle St from 1pm until 4pm on Saturday.  Three Lions, one venue, bring your camera.

It’s also an enormous privilege to announce that after we hosted a live chat session with Willie Wallace last year and Tommy Gemmell last month, Bertie Auld will be live on CQN from 1pm this Friday.  Bertie is the strong silent type, so you’ll need to prepare a few questions to bring him out of his shell.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best, freshly signed by the man himself this morning.

Took two teams in the World Cup sweepstake at work. Workmates shouted “Steward’s enquiry” when I drew Argentina, followed by Brazil. :)

  3. Just Listened to what Hodgson says about pressing football, to my mind that was basically, we aren’t fit enough to waste energy on that scientific claptrap.

On the contrary, it’s because I think it’s worth defending that I made my initial point.

You see things differently and that’s fine but in my opinion if Celtic had challenged some of the charges brought by EUFA for banners/songs they would have been thrown out.

    Where were we?

Celtic, like all clubs, are governed by rules of competition, etc.

Those that make the rules, have the power to enforce them.

Whether Celtic or any club challenge them is immaterial. Until they are changed, which is never going to happen, the clubs are bound by them.

Celtic have fallen foul of various crowd violations and been punished on an escalating scale.

I am unaware if the club itself have any hits against it.

What has happened recently, is that a group within the support decided on a particular action, in the full knowledge that it would rebound on the club.

In their view, it was a risk worth taking. Definitely worth it, as they wouldn’t have to pay the consequences.

When the inevitable happened, Celtic placed sanctions on the offending groupHowever, they reopened channels and agreed to accommodate them IF they would abide by the stadium rules.

It would appear that they reserved the right to be sole arbiters of their behaviour.

This, to my simple mind is anarchy.

My simple question is, knowing your profession, would you, or your headmaster, allow a group of pupils to decide which school rules are to be obeyed and which are not.

I have no desire to fall out with you, there’s enough trolls and dafties permeating CQN these days without two Celtic supporters arguing like a pair of lassies :-)

That’s not the post that I first replied to however, it was a reference you made the other day about sending something for TCT to read.

That was how we ended up where we are now, discussing the Trust and not the GB.

I just watched the Alba tribute to big Jock Stein and was moved to tears. I remember some of those games from the early seventy’s when we were kings of Europe. I also remember the night the big man passed and the significance of that night in Wales is still enormous.

Lots of love shown from the people that knew the man from all his clubs and it was great to see his whole career laid out in one hour. Being one of the younger posters on here I learned so much in that hour. Whaaaaaahhhh:_).

Jim Craig’s tribute at the end of the program summed it up for me. He could barely get the words out and you could see the love he and his team mates had for Jock.

Jock Stein was a magnificent man, a great manager and a defining influence on me as a Celtic supporter.

A fantastic hour of television that humbles me a person.

I had a call from the club today asking why I’d not renewed. I gave the poor lass both barrels but at the end of the day my desire to support the eleven men on the field is overpowering my loathing and negativity, and reasons not to renew. I just cant do it. I love Celtic and everything about the club.

So it’s really a matter of trust at the end of the day?

Or more accurately mistrust. Those not invited because of the format, do not trust those who were invited to accurately report the views of the supporters with whom they are in touch with either physically or via social media?

Because that is what is being said. In terms of on the ground groups those who attended from such groups are known to their group.

In terms of bloggers the same could be said, many are known to each other and in the cut and thrust of debate you get an idea of the cut of the other man’s jib, so what is the difference at the end of the day?

In terms of CQN the posts made were copy pasted as is and those on the same theme grouped and passed in as posted.

Almost in the same way as the Open Forum conducted it’s business. Points made, questions asked and passed to Celtic.

The invite to all issue is a sham because all cannot attend. So by its very nature that approach is as exclusive as the invite extended to those who were at the Supporters Form.

I don’t see how any distinction can be justified because both approaches have exclusion weaknesses and any arrangement depends on trust, so how is that addressed?

ACGR, you are probably right… I forget how many Tw**’s and Fa&&&’s that can post. Yes, It’s a Celtic place… but when one person, just one person attempts to negatively impact the club via their views and take others with them… e.g. “Club isnae spending enough money, so I’ll no either” I think WTF!?

When is our nike deal finished ? Addidas do alot better range .. Then again so do o’neills

  17. So i take it the 40k season book sold was a load of aul you know what ?

I agree Adidas does make some good stuff… but Nike has been good for us to date… but O’Neill’s!? unless you are talking helmets and sliotars… Bought some shorts recently… Urgh!

I’ve always wanted Celtic to add a wee bit more Scotland to our tops, more so than just a saltire on the back of some older tops! Tartan can look pretty shortbread box, the version on this new top is pretty cool… IMO… Hey, I’m sure we all agree if we beat ever Barcelona, Real Madrid wearing it, they’d fly off the shelves!

Shorts with numbers… absolutely… why aren’t they like this today? regulations?

    Hi Proudbhouy,

What should we do as an alternative? lie and give free tickets away like a 2 year old team?

Fergus made a great point… we bought into saving Celtic… Why not sustaining Celtic?

I’d hate to wait until we’re on the precipice until “we step up to the plate!”

We take the rough with the smooth remember… “Fans are the Lifeblood of the game” a certain Celtic Manager said… it works both ways doesn’t it?

No one should be forced into buying, renewing etc. but likewise no one should be discouraged!

Iv no problem with giving away free tickets espcially to younger fans , gives them a taste of what its like and also if the ticket is free the fan might buy celtic pools ticket, programme etc. plus its another voice for the 12th man.. Not ideal but better than an empty green seat.

Also there is countless fans who cant afford to buy a season book or people who work shifts and the way fixtures are thrown about to suit tv means fans cant plan ahead. Espcially the irish fans or those in south england.

Also the disgraceful treatment of celtic fans inside and outside parkhead needs to be addressed.

The lies from the board and the silence from them when we are getting attacked from media is pretty annoying aswel. They are the leaders of our club.

Fergus and celtic tell us they cant rely on tv money as its not enough so the pressure on the fans to buy season books is on every year… But then in the middle of the season when tv says hey celtic were switching your match here is some money —

Do celtic say sorry our fans are expecting this game at 3pm on a saturday and some have flights booked etc

    Or

So they say no problem and re advertise the game ? Leaving fans out of pocket .. Leaving seats empty.. Leaving fans annoyed.

  21. Celbridge celt

I wouldnt discourage fans to buy them either.. As much as im annoyed by treatment of our lifeblood last season if i lived near paradise and had the cash id buy one .

Over 3yrs since my last game sadly.

  22. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

celbridge celt, I’m happy you got the zadok tone and I hope you used it to maximum effect to get it right up the huns in the emerald isle.
