Bogus issues and a Good Old Celtic debate

1020

I’ve not spent a lot of time online this week (work sometimes creeps in) but can’t believe the amount of traction that notion that Sevco would somehow be able to acquire SFA membership of a dead club, with all associated benefits, but be in a position to dictate set terms on how past misdeeds of Rangers would be recorded.

This is a bogus debate which serves only to deflect from the more serious issues facing Sevco, namely, do they have circa £25m to pay their way this season?  If not, their pedantic views of disciplinary matters are moot, although they may be used as a principled excuse to fold a football club.

On more positive matters……….

Tony Hamilton asked me into the Celtic TV to discuss various issues surrounding the club.  We spoke about how recent events elsewhere have had a galvanising impact on supporters of Celtic and other clubs, where Celtic’s future should be.  I also gave a breakdown of what the death of Rangers would mean financially to Celtic, with or without Champions League group stage qualification, talked about how it would benefit the entire Scottish game if we found a new league to play in, and the great atmosphere we have at Celtic Park these days – which you can experience if you buy a season ticket, which you absolutely-without-a-doubt-should!

Do it now.  The video is below:

Read an article earlier by Colin Armstrong on the relatively new blog “Rangers Standard”. Rangers Standard is an interesting blog where it seems to me, Bears might go for a bit of rehab. And well due is rehab for Bears generally, what with all manner of abuses visited on them in recent times.

Nevertheless, Colin observes in his article that the significance of the loss of the Rangers News/Rangers Monthly (he was a former writer) is not appreciated by the Rangers fans generally, and he suggests that the title closed because, unlike the Celtic View, it didn’t address issues of importance and relevance to the Rangers support. The title wasn’t relevant to the support, and so the support didn’t miss it.

Colin suggests that examples of the type of content missing from the titles, and which as a consequence led to the titles failing to engage the Rangers support, might be: “Protestantism, Unionism and Monarchism”.

I must confess I can find no reflection of these themes in any Celtic View I have ever read, but let’s allow Colin his right to make his argument and leave it to the likes of SFTB, and others qualified in Sociology, to consider the more prosaic aspects of these suggested themes.

Nevertheless, on reflection, the following came to mind:

On Protestantism, I’m not entirely sure it exists today outside of a handful of fairly peripheral congregations maintaining the strict Calvinist tradition. Certainly, the work and aims of the Church of Scotland’s Church and Society Council are highly aligned to the social democratic movement many Scots Catholics would identify with. Ian Galloway’s ministry in the Gorbals is evangelical, ecumencial and humble. And rather humbling. If Rev Galloway protest anything, it is the erosion of life chances for the children of the urban poor.

I’m not sure that Ian Galloway’s ministry is quite what Colin had in mind when he suggested the Rangers News needed more Protestantism in its content, but if it is, I can only agree with him!

Unionism of course is a curious position in latter day Scotland. I grew up with Teddy Taylor as the local Castlemilk MP, and his Progessives Party running Glasgow Corporation. It seems inconceivable now, only 30 or so years on, that Castlemilk might vote Tory by a large majority, but from the post war period through to the mid 70s, the Tory voter was as likely to live in a municipal estate as a bought hoose.

Today Scotland stands in the midst of the debate over Independence, a decision that the nation will take in 2 years time. The central issue seems to be how much ‘independence’ does the nation want, with a spectrum from greater devolved powers to outright dissolution of the Union. Unionism is not an element in the mix, other than the reflected referendum question: How much Unionism do we want to ditch?

Things change, and it seems reasonable to conclude that Colin’s idea of Unionsim has lost traction in society at large, and is unlikely to return.

And finally, Monarchism. We have become inured to the pomp and pomposity of Rangers’ relationship with the Queen, and lately the absurdity of its reality when Her Majesty’s Customs and Revenue officers elected to close the club down for a decade of unpaid taxes. We perhaps though overlook the significance of last year’s visit of the Queen to Dublin, and her silent tribute to the ‘Boys of the Old Brigade’. Moreover, her visit recently to Belfast and meeting with convicted (in the Irish Republic) IRA terrorist Martin McGuinness, now an Executive of the United Kingdom Government in Northern Ireland. Modren Monarchy is rubbish!

Looking around in summary, we seem to have:

A Protestantism that is for all intents and purposes a Christian social democratic movement.

A Unionism that may shortly to be voted out of all relevance to the country.

And a Monarchy that recognises the legitimacy of the historic and more recent armed opposition to Unionism and Protestantism. (NB I make no implied political statement here, and merely observe some recent events).

One wonders, given how matters have played out, had Rangers News and Rangers Monthly embraced Colin’s suggestions for relevant content, would Rangers have survived as long as they did?

    Just some random thoguhts.
