Bolstering the attack quickish

769

With 26 career goals, 25 of which came in a Dundee United shirt, £1.5m sounds a tad generous for Nadir Ciftci.  Celtic’s earlier offer of £900k sounds more like the mark but Wigan have validated United’s target price with a deal with meets their requirements, if not that of the player’s.

Is he a player to improve Celtic?  Quite possibly, he’ll bring something we don’t have at the moment – a sticky out ball – but it’s a big ask to expect him to step up to Champions League levels.  Signing that level of player might take Champions League money, but we’ll need to get there first, which is why we need to bolster the attack quickish.

Two years ago we talked about the number of senior games a good player is able to make before he’s noticed by those to rich and lazy to do as much low-level research Celtic must do to unearth a gem.

Victor Wanyama made 51 appearances before becoming a Celtic player, Virgil van Dijk made 62.  It’s likely both spent the bulk of those games without anyone paying much attention to them, Celtic’s scouts are likely to have been alerted when they have little more than a dozen or so games left at their previous clubs.

Ciftci’s made 67 senior appearances.  If he has what it takes, the world will know about it sooner rather than later.

  1. Looking at the Video of Ciftci,(not the usual)because we know this is what he does on a regular basis, whats not to like?.He has a style of play that we do not have at the moment. He runs at defenders, takes them on,(Their worst nightmare),he commits them,he has two good feet.He CAN score all types of goals. He is fearless, rumbustious, and a bit gallus at times.

For the money, which lets be honest,in the grand scheme of things is peanuts,I think we are doing the right thing. The added bonus is,the boy WANTS to play for us.

I really cant see a problem. If he does not work out,we will get the money back from someone.

  2. What was the point of posting a 5 year old article telling all supporters to be good catholics.

I thought this catholic club nonsense had been put to bed years ago. Over a hundred years ago

I want to play for Celtic as well….by that logic, Celtic should sign me.

    And you….and everybody on CQN.

    And….im better than Ciftci:)

  4. Clink\o/ – it’s strange. Maybe a hangover from last nights blog or one of the multiple nom de plumes of one of our resident right wingers having a wee dig.

Some people want a previous prominent poster back. I don’t think he’s gone away you know…..

  5. Cifti and the auld ‘european class’ argument.

Guys can only get to being European Class when they actually play in Europe. Is Leigh Griffiths European Class? Don’t know yet. He was bossed by the Inter defence and it was a brand new ball game for him.

Cifti is in the exact same boat. Like Griffiths he has his ‘issues’. He seems to be a late developer, a player who has floated around not doing very much but clubs have taken a punt on his talent.

Is he worth the £1.5m? He is worth what someone is willing to pay for him and Wigan were willing to pay that. We lost Matthews for £2m and he is of similar age but with far greater experience.

Dundee United are the ones going public with the bids. As is their want. They know deep down that the player will be pictured with Paul The Tim soon enough. With Wigan out the way it’s a one horse race. Celtic are not being bullies by offering what they are offering. Dundee United are not being stubborn or awkward doing what they are doing.

The player is king just like we have found out in these situations.

If we sign him before Friday we might sell out St Mirren Park….

  6. The Green Man – before we sign you I want to see your Youtube compilation of goals, great tackles and near misses……..

but £750K in todays market is a snip. You’re probably worth a punt….

  7. 1.3 -1.5 million for a guy we can sign a pre contract with in a few months who can’t seem to score from open play after Christmas and has his own seat in front of the hampden disciplinary blazers?

    Am I missing summat?

    Maybe I am

  8. We cannot afford players who are “proven” champions league goalscorers. That’s just a fact.

By the way, Dundee United need to pretend to put up a fight. Their fans were up in arms about the selling of zig and zag for buttons. Even angrier when they found out Jackie Mac gets a cut.

Always has been money mad that Jackie.

  10. I think Ronny wants a Sutton style striker , to hold the ball up for midfielders and get the odd goal from set piece and scraps . Not necessarily a 20 goal a season striker more of a creator for others, don’t think Griff. Scepovic or Stokes are that type of player Ciftci could be.

Saw someone mention Darryl Murphy earlier.

For me if we had played Murphy from the start against ICT in NL’s first full season we would have won the league.

The season before last ,I thought Ciftci would be a good buy for us,but last years *seemed to be out ran, out paced and out thought by a fitter ,quicker Ronny team.

I trust if we get him up to speed he could be an asset to us and will trust Ronny if that is who he lands with to make the best of him.

    Re Cifci

If the biting is around an 8-10 match ban surely it would be in our best interests to wait til January as we could get him on a pre contract or for a nominal fee. If we do sign him next week he’ll get a longer ban than that and you can take that to the bank.

    Auldheid,

“Name one thing Celtic have done on their own that was in their power to do to have stopped how RFC were treated on going bust?”

Questioned the secret five way agreement.

    =========

I covered that in my post.

Celtic question the other parties to the five way agreement and they say.

“It’s ok for you to take the high ground. You can afford it especially with the door to CL qualification each year open.

We are fecked if we lose the income dependent on Rangers supporters so we want an agreement.

If we go tit’s up who are you going to play?

Anyway there are 41 of us and one of you.”

I can see why Celtic were in no position to question the 5 way agreement.

  19. PF Ayr

Previous blog. I would suggest that it is the media who repeat the mantra based on one statement by PL and another by DD that TRFC absence is costing Celtic.

It then gets recirculated and in spite of all efforts to demonstrate it is financial nonsense, like a weed with deep roots it keeps coming back. But not because or custodians bring it up but because the media nourish it.

    Their living depends on it.

  20. Auldheid

Are you confirming that in your mind that there categorically was a five way agreement and that Celtic endorsed it?

  21. Thanks Robert Tressell.

Can anyone recommend a decent hotel in Glasgow city centre ?/

A few seem to be unavailable over the 12th !!

I like the janko and Boyata signings.

    Not sure about Cifti II

I will trust Ronnie on that one !!!

  22. And as for the life of Celtic FC, Celtic FC are nothing without the support, nothing, don’t you think that an official/unofficial endorsement of the 5 way agreement was a issue for the support en-masse, or are the board now the ethos and the Support just the cash till to corporate hubris and dividends?

  23. Auldheid,

I don’t remember reading that bit in your post however irrespective of what the other teams may or may not have done. Our board have previous for declaring publicly the need for integrity, making a public statement would have shown a bit of consistency but more to the point your scenario is conjecture. We don’t know if what you said would have happened what we do know is that our board did not publicly support integrity on this issue.

The rules and integrity of the sport were ignored, I might also add that this was all done when those we know that were involved were trying to leapfrog them into the SPL, the clubs you refer to refused to allow that and their contingency plan of division 1 to happen therefore the evidence would suggest your scenario is unlikely.

But your question was what could our board have done alone to have made a difference and that was the question is answered.

  24. Do 6 or 7 men on the board of Celtic believe they have the right to decide the road map for generations of Celtic Supporters who have gone and those are yet to be conceived… they have that right in isolation of question?

nd you believe that that is right and just knowing the history of our club and her Supporters sacrifices and tribulations… you endorse that executive exclusivity?

  26. Beginning to warm to the possibilty of Ciftci signing for us. As I’ve stated previously on here, he reminds me of BBJ but with “better feet”. Dont forget, his understanding whilst playing with GMS and SA previously, should help with any transition to playing in the Hoops. He wont get messed about in the box by defenders that’s for sure.

Unfortunately, the length of his upcoming suspension, will be dependent on whether he signs for us or someone else. When he does eventually get the nod to play, I cant see him managing many games without being booked by our esteemed MIB’s, because of his rombustuous style, and of course, wearing the Hoops.

What I would like someone to explain to me is, why did DU accept an offer of £1,000,000 from Wigan, yet I understand we’re going to offer £1,300,000? That seems a bit Sevconomical to me!

When have you watched cifti play against us and thought that guy can play. Personally never caught my eye. Think they have a better striker in young Muirfield.

  28. Cifti, I see a lot of the ‘if he signs for us he will get longer’ to be honest for what he done he deserves it, if he was a dug he’d have got put down.

On that,I disagree. Celtic were in no position to prevent a return of a Rangers by virtue of being out-voted. But they were most certainly in a position to question its desired outcome, and more importantly, its secrecy and validity.
