Bolstering the attack quickish

769

With 26 career goals, 25 of which came in a Dundee United shirt, £1.5m sounds a tad generous for Nadir Ciftci.  Celtic’s earlier offer of £900k sounds more like the mark but Wigan have validated United’s target price with a deal with meets their requirements, if not that of the player’s.

Is he a player to improve Celtic?  Quite possibly, he’ll bring something we don’t have at the moment – a sticky out ball – but it’s a big ask to expect him to step up to Champions League levels.  Signing that level of player might take Champions League money, but we’ll need to get there first, which is why we need to bolster the attack quickish.

Two years ago we talked about the number of senior games a good player is able to make before he’s noticed by those to rich and lazy to do as much low-level research Celtic must do to unearth a gem.

Victor Wanyama made 51 appearances before becoming a Celtic player, Virgil van Dijk made 62.  It’s likely both spent the bulk of those games without anyone paying much attention to them, Celtic’s scouts are likely to have been alerted when they have little more than a dozen or so games left at their previous clubs.

Ciftci’s made 67 senior appearances.  If he has what it takes, the world will know about it sooner rather than later.

I agree the defence is weak, why have we got 3 right backs and only 1 left back.

When was the last time Izzy had competition?

At least Griffiths has Scepovic challenging.

Howdy bud. Hope yer well. How’s the golf?

Yes a true story. Could not resist it. Too good to be true.

Hope to be over end of this month/beginning of August. Catch you then.

Id suggest that we already bought the best SPL players, SA, and GMS.

    Fair enough.

Now, what other SPL players are worthy of Celtic at the moment?

    Where’s the quality?

I think our first 11 is fine but we do lack depth in certain areas. VVD will probably go in August. That leaves us a big gap and a blending process. I agreed with the initial point though that fans being so concerned about the forward line and not the defence is baffling. There is a bit of gelling to be done. The defence may be fine but a back up LB and goalie are required.

Ciifti poor goal scoring record terrible disciplinary record ,not worth a bag of crisps let alone 1.5 million, and given the performance of Boyata on Saturday we still need a class centre back, not a patch on Denayer

  7. Clifton – you’re alright – they are all over your way for the 12th – probably be a few marches here and there at the weekend before but I think the big glasgow one was on sat past.

Yes. But we will need a CB as well once we sell VVD.

I like Ciftci. He brings more to the team than goals but 1 in 3 isn’t bad at a club like Dundee United. Maybe he would score 1 in 2 at Celtic.

Adam Rooney looks like a penalty box player to me. Similar to Griffiths. Ciftci offers something different. Though I am unsure about where it would leave Scepovic.

Im well past my sell by date, and have a bad attitude….but I can do things with the ball, that Ciftci could only dream of:)

Id score more goals in the CL.

We will sign Cifti for 1.3 million UTD. are just posturing at the moment trying to keep there fans onside.Cifti is a young player 23 and has scored goals in the SPL with the right coaching he can go on to be a very good player. We also need to find a decent back up keeper another Centre Back for when VVD leaves and a leftback who can go straight into the first team so there is plenty of work needed on the playing squad. It is all well and fine to have a super duper stadium but you must have a decent team to play in it on Saturday we looked like Dukla Pumpherston. H.H.

  13. Eyes Wide Open on

I think we absolutely need a big, burly striker and someone who doesn’t fit the RD mould of player because that gives is what a Plan B is.

Of the criticisms I’ve heard against RD it’s been the lack of one.

So I agree with the theory – which I can see serving a purpose in Certain European and domestic games.

I just disagree with the choice of personnel.

“given the performance of Boyata on Saturday we still need a class centre back, not a patch on Denayer”

You kidding? One friendly game and he’s a duffer? Get a grip.

There were people saying VVD wasn’t as good as Kelvin Wilson after the Kazahkstan debacle.

Boyata hasn’t played much football and will improve with every game.

    Performances in friendlies are meaningless.

  15. Cifti may not be the only forward to be signed this window, he may only be additional cover, maybe Tony Stokes has already been earmarked by another club and, as like Adam Mathews, a replacement is found before selling por cierto.

I guess it looks like we’re going to find out one way or another.

BTW I wasn’t suggesting we signed Rooney just pointing out he is more prolific at SPFL level than Ciftci and as you pointed out Ciftci more so than Samaras. I just know who I would rather gamble on out of the three of them.

    @kikinthenakas said it well…..

  20. Nadir Cifti is far from being SPL dross and I personally think he would be a great signing for us. He has bags of skill, strength, speed and would score goals in abundance for us. What not to like and at 1.5 mill a far better option than Balde,Pucki, Scepovic ever were.

  21. Son of Gabriel on

I don’t think Cifti is dross, and I do think he can potentially do a job at SPFL level, he seems another rotation player though.

I do believe we would improve him, but by how much?

Are there no strikers in the youth system worth a shout? I’d rather save the 1.5m and see a home grown boy step up personally.

The way I see Ciftci is as a squad player. We need a sqaud. We are short on strikers and even with him we still need another IMO.

    ————-

Agree with that. Some players will only come if CL is guaranteed. Ciftci would come in now. If he were to score the goal that took us through he’d be worth every penny and then some.

Good player who could improve under Ronny. Also has a good understanding with GMS.

I read that post like you did. I remember a backlash against the TUC and their attempts to play the Celtic Support.

Why, today, would a Celtic Supporter try and make coin out of that?

What could possibly be their motivation?

  28. Nadir Ciftci is a decent player – big, strong, a little skill and enough pace to get by.

He also has some ‘behavioural’ issues.

He is not a CL player in my opinion. Out of our attacking 4, we may have 3 from Dundee Utd supplemented by SJ, should we be lucky enough to get the the CL group stages. Whilst all those boys work hard, they do not have the technique required to play at that level.

Indeed, whilst GMS and Armstrong do a job for us, they are not even on the radar for a bang average Scottish national team.

We are shopping in the SPFL now it appears and substituting technique for hard work. When Ronny got appointed i had hoped we would marry both attributes.

Indeed, if VVD goes and Izzy is replaced by the likes of Paul Dixon, we will really be lacking any technical quality. Izzy, for all his faults, has a great first touch and this is something that is absolutely required in the CL.

This slightly alarming transfer policy would not concern as much if we were, as Ronny had suggested, trying to get in the cream of the 17-19 year olds in Europe.

These young boys are exchanging clubs for no more than 1-3 million and will potentially be genuine CL quality in 3 or 4 years.

Thats where i was led to believe our money would be going.
