Break record but don’t leave pointless

1241

At around 13:16 tomorrow afternoon Fraser Forster will hopefully break the 40-year record of Aberdeen’s Bobby Clark for not conceding a goal in Scottish league football.  Clark’s record is next up for the Celtic keeper but the British and European records are not too far away.

Apart from Celtic Park itself there would be no better place to break this record than at Tynecastle, but the most important part of the day is to secure a win.  Concede early but win the game and we have done our job.  Break the record and leave pointless and we will have nothing to celebrate.

Clarity has never been a prominent feature when it comes to the analysis of football finances.  2012 threw up a slew of ‘experts’, practically all of whom swallowed lines from PR people instead of explaining HMRC’s published rules on voting for or against Company Voluntary Arrangements.

Journalists were briefed on HMRC’s intentions, which filtered to the ‘experts’, soon this PR version of events was accepted an a reality.  The same was going on inside football.  One journalist called me back then to dispute my challenge to his assertion that Celtic would have vote to allow Newco Rangers into the SPL, and that the SPL itself was absolutely certain to vote them “back” (sic.).  Celtic were never going to that way and by then the SPL tide had turned.

It was not in Celtic’s interests to have Newco parachuted into top flight football, which has become clear in the subsequent years, although many in Scotland, including a sizeable chunk of the Celtic support, thought otherwise, and that the club would vote in favour.

It was, therefore, refreshing to watch BBC Reporting Scotland last night without the 2012 flops.  A new expert was found to ask the pertinent question, a £1.5m loan is fine for a short-term fix but what about the enormous long-term problems?

Many thanks to everyone who participated in the CQteN Dream Team.  We have now passed the 125 team target, which has triggered a £1000 donation from a longstanding CQN’er, who is a shining example of what Celtic is all about.

The Dream Team is your chance to select your team from those who have played 10 or more games during the CQN decade.

Select 11 players in either a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 formation; you’ll need a goalkeeper, two full backs, two central defenders, 3 or 4 midfielders and 2 or 3 forwards.  You also need to select a manager from the decade.

The team judged as the strongest will be announced at the CQteN St Patrick’s Dinner on 14 March.  The event is open to bloggers and lurkers but you can only enter ONCE.  Closing date is 3pm, Sunday 9 March.  There will be prizes!!

For a comprehensive list of players who are eligible for selection, see CRC’s comment here. Email your entry to Doc here, and remember to include a manager: doccqten@gmail.com

I was just thinking the same and I believe it is in our best interests for Virgil miss out on the World Cup. It would be great to keep a player of Virgil’s quality for another couple of years.

At times I feel as if we are trying to sell our best players for the best prices. I would rather we didn’t mention the sums we could get because IMO this prepares for the inevitable sale: accepted without complaint.

  4. A simple question to Sevco CEO :

If you are in no danger of Administration, why is the story of negotiations, not the money actually coming through mind you, for a supposed 1.5 million so newsworthy?

Everyone knows the stories of Sevco being utterly skint are, pardon the pun, bang on the money. The very fact you have gone so much out of your way to report this story shows just how desperate you truly are.

As of now there is 1 piece of legistration that could be constued as anti Catholic, and I use that term very carefully.

What about the recent advisory report on sectarianism, it ctagorically states that catholic schools are a good thing and we should keep them, is that the actions of an anti catholic party?

The OB act is an attack on Celtic fans, some of those who drew it up were bigots, there are bigots in every political party in Scotland and that is a fact. To label 1 as anti catholic is just stupid when there is no evidense of them being so in their governance of this country.

TD A bam pot more than a flower pot, my point is that you break Society’s rules when it suits you, yet you and your fellow travellers keep shouting rules are rules when talking about the Green Brigade.

I am well, thanks, coming to terms with the pacemaker I had ” installed ” a few weeks ago.

    I call it, Gerry!

I have a painting of a tram car, sitting outside the Tramway Vaults, at the bottom of Hopehill Rd. Very nostalgic.

In response to Corkcelt, I think most of us have erred in the manner he describes.

In my case, in on one occassion the Guards came in and took 76 names.

Fortunately, I was never caught with an open fly, but had I, a summons would have followed.

To challenge a law is not to break it.

Even bad laws are valid, until they are repealed and no society changes laws because they are broken, or, at least, they shouldn’t .

Anyway, it’s a sad day when, as you say, after a 126 years of being attacked from the outside, the club is now under attack from within.

Are you seriously telling me that you have a problem with the Green Brigade because you believe/perceive that they are the Celtic Trust’s puppets?

    ————————————————————————————————————

I have a problem with the G.B. because I believe them to be politically indoctrinated.

I feel that the political indoctrination of the young is offensive. How many historical examples would you like me to provide?

Young lads week in week out displaying their contempt for “war criminal” John Reid.

    Where did that come from?

The C.T.`s rush to George Sq.after what was probably a contrived provocation of the police in the “kettling “incident (they knew what it meant, but they went) convinced me that they are hand in glove.

With another couple of seasons in European football and maybe international recognition by then, he will have a queue of big clubs waiting for him.

What proof do you have that the Green Brigade are the Celtic Trust’s puppets?

Is it of the same genre as the PLC’s belief that the majority of the support backed their knee-jerk reaction post Motherwell?

I’d love to know how the PLC can quantify/substantiate such a claim and likewise you accusation that the Green Brigade are the Celtic Trust’s puppies.

  23. Mac jay the club made a massive mistake regarding Motherwell.they pre judged and punished supporters for no reason and I don’t believe they have ever apologised to anyone. They did this for two reasons. Firstly because they wanted to appease the media furore that had been whipped up. See my example on how I would have handled that. The bbc non showing of the stand. I would have mercilessly have torn that apart. Secondly because it suited celtics agenda in disbanding the GB which they had been desperate to do for some time. All of the platitudes in the world about our magnificent support etc pales into insignificance by these sort of actions.

My last remaining hope is that celtic realised they have made massive errors and were learning. But the complacent responses are not encouraging. We need to hope guys like Auldheid can help us improve things.

TD you would be surprised at my general positivity in many things and my ability to laugh at everything. It doesn’t suit your agenda though and you are scared to engage your brain in general so I will leave you to spin around endlessly hating your fellow celtic supporters.

  24. Absolute deviants those GB Bhoys:

“The Green Brigade would like to thank the Celtic support for the incredible collective generosity which was exhibited on the day of our food bank collection in December of 2013 at Celtic Park. It was both humbling and inspiring to witness the shopping bags pile up outside the stadium as men, women and children kindly donated what they could to help those in need at Christmas time as they made their way to the match. The response was entirely fitting of the club’s founding ethos and an almost unbelievable 5,746.75kg, ie 5.75 tonnes, of food was collected and distributed to the impoverished people of Glasgow’s East end and beyond. We were also given a total of £465.45 to pass on to the Glasgow North East Food Bank.

‘’I would like to thank the supporters of Celtic FC for their generosity and thoughtfulness; their response was overwhelming’’. Beth Aitken, Acting Project Manager of Glasgow North East Food Bank.

An event like this encapsulates what Celtic means to so many of us. In a time of austerity and social apathy, with a dangerously callous Conservative government at the helm and the mainstream media seemingly intent on demonising the working class at every turn, the Celtic support has once more demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to charitable aims and to helping the local community. We thank you all for your kindness and hope that we can count on your continued support for any future charitable projects that the group seeks to organise.”

To be fair, if any CEO of any company in the world was asked the question “Is the company in danger of going into administration”, there is not one who would say, “Oh yes. It’s true. I cannot deny it.”

Even the Sevco CEO has a responsibility to shareholders.

If and when they go into administration, the world will know. They’re not going to pre-empt it just because a journalist asks the question, or because a few Celtic fans fancy a party.
