Building mainstays, lessons from yesterday

1164

Great news that Mikael Lustig and Emilio Izaguirre have extended their contracts until 2017.  Footballers’ careers flow on a few distinct tracks.  Some are too hot for their clubs to retain, Victor Wanyama, who declined a contract renewal with almost 3 years of his initial deal remaining, fell into this category.  Some, like Georgios Samaras, will represent diminishing value to their clubs, and attract only diminishing contracts.

I could make an argument that the players in the third category, who are highly valuable to their club, but are not so valuable that they are impossible to retain, are more important than the latter.

It’s important for Celtic to have outstanding achievers (especially up front) but clubs find it difficult to remain on-strategy if they have significant churn each season.  Transfer income is great, and often needed, but ideally you would look at your squad around this time of the year and want to change no more than 3 players over the summer.

I reckon Celtic should be able to hold onto Lustig, Izaguirre, Matthews, Ambrose, Brown, Commons, Mulgrew, Stokes and Forrest until the club want to move them on.  These players are the mainstay of our squad, hopefully Johansen will prove to be too.  Forster and van Dijk fall into the same category as Wanyama and Hooper – they will have high paying options in England.

Forster and van Dijk will help get us into and compete in the Champions League, but two or three gems are useless if they are surrounded by players less polished bling.

The last 24 hours has been a salutary lesson on what will continue to happen until Celtic appoint a manager.  The Daily Mail got the ball rolling when someone told them Roy Keane was leaving Dublin to speak to Celtic.  This was good information, in as much as it was true, Celtic did meet Roy Keane, but the ‘paper put inappropriate weight upon it.

Soon everyone and their dog was reporting the deal was done.  Which surprised Celtic.

Today’s news – there is no news.

‘News’ will continue to break and eventually one story will actually be the news we’re waiting for.  There is value (reputation and advertising) in rushing out with a story before it’s confirmed or others are doing the same, and little consequence (zero damage to reputation and you get to keep the ad money) in getting it wrong, so stay tuned for the next instalment.  Only this week, Pope Francis was talking about papal retirement, maybe he has another gig in mind.

I think we can safely assume he’s on first name terms with everyone of them.

That’s why they never ask him any difficult questions.

  5. Lustig is our best right back since Danny McGrain and our top CL performer. Izzy was back to his best last season. Great news both have signed on until 2017.

  6. On Monday we are 3 weeks away from the CL qualifiers draw IIRC – get a wiggle on Celtic.

    FFM –

Reminds me of the story about the Glasgow man on holiday in Benidorm. Took his wife into the country to see a REAL bullfight and won the raffle, which was a meal in the restaurant and the prize dish was the slain Bull’s bollocks.

Jimmy and his missus absolutely loved the dish.

A year later they returned and would you believe it, he won the raffle again.

Back in the restaurant, they received the cooked testicles, but this time they were much smaller and not very appetising. Not wishing to cause a scene, Jummy and his wife devoured the dish but were left disappinted and still hungry.

“Excuse me Perdro,” Jimmy asked a passing waiter. “When I was here a year ago, the prize bollocks were massive, succulant and delicious. Tonight they were small, shrivelled and very disappointing. What happened?”

“Ah,” said the waiter. “Sometimes the matador he does not win.”

  11. Weeron. Got to laugh that you said Mon bought assets that ran down until they were worthless. lol

We bought 1st eleven players that stayed in the first team for 5 or 6 years and we did not have to waste money on projects

See Thompson , Hartson , Sutton etc

  12. jonny the tim,

Had a couple after coming off the nightshift, it’ll be bedtime soon for a wee nap and back to normal until Monday night.

Mind, if you fancy Aberdour or the pool the following day we can stay at my brothers…he’s got a pub pool table to practice. Mind bring your speedos though :)

After the Kayal/ Izaguirre experience is it wrong to wish for VVD to sustain a moderate injury ? ;/)

Once we’ve successfully negociated the Euroqualies, obviously…

  14. Weeron. Great deal for vic at first. But only if Neil got some of that cash to strength the side

If the end great deal for PL and Celtic PLC.

Poor deal for fans , Celtic fc and the manager

  16. ....PFayr supports WeeOscar on

We’re going to sell FF and VVD then

    Fine

So long as the money is reinvested in the playing staff

Otherwise instead of having a couple of diamonds with unpolished bling …we’ll just have a team of unpolished bling

We don’t need to sell ….if players want to leave. ….let them go if the deal is good enough …. But reinvest in the team …the players on the park

Perhaps the ambition of PLs to come out of every transfer window stronger could be met this summer …it hadn’t been met over the last few windows

No more Balde, Pukki , Boeriggter inadequates ….please

Not sure what is funny about that. The feast was great. The famine, not so much.

As for Vic, a certain Neil Lennon said early on, that Vic was a one-off. He knew he had an outstanding talent. He also knew that there was little chance of finding another one of that ilk.

    Virgil is pretty decent, though.

Trouble is, everyone of these ‘A list’ players know that they can get 4, 5 or 6 times the money down south. They won’t extend. We are stuck with that reality. The Club have to manage this as best they can

  20. Leftclicktic,

Read back to see your post, a great achievement by your daughter, it gives me hope for my bhoy…I think that’s him just getting out off bed :(

Could have been worse I guess :)

  22. Pfayr. Agree 1000% mate. We don’t need to sell players

If we sell frazer and VVD , no reason why entire income can’t go to new manager

The vic situation was a fraud

Neil got zero of that money

I am left “floundering” at that remark……..

  24. IGC

“Martin O’Neill’s team were a prime example of two or three gems surrounded by those of less polish.

Let’s think about this, IMO the gems ie ‘High paying options in England’: Messrs Larsson, Sutton, Hartson

One could argue Lambert and Petrov (given his transfer fee) and to a lesser extent Lennon and Thompson.

But the others? Douglas, Valgaren, Mjallby, Agathe, McNamara, Laursen, Sylla, Maloney.

I would argue that they were of the slightly less polished variety.”

A wee bit disingenuous categorisation to arrive at 2 or 3 surrounded by journeymen (which was what Paul said) when you list 5 to 7 yourself.

    I would put them as:-

    Level 1- Larsson

Level 2- Petrov, Sutton, Hartson, Lambert (CL medal winner), Lennon and Mjallby (Swedish Internationalist who had played twice impressively against England)

Level 3- Valgaeren, McNamara, Balde, Agathe, Maloney (soon to be POTY)- just a touch above journeymen

Level 4- Journeymen- Douglas, Sylla, Laursen, Fernandez

    Level 5- Jamie Smith

Don’t forget we had Lubo and Juninho there two as well as two coveted (until they came to us) goalkeepers, Hedman and Kharine.

I think your attempt to downsize the spending and transfer fees capable of being commanded is unrealistic.

In contrast with the current squad we have

    Level 1:- No one

Level 2- Maybe Forster and VVD

Level 3- Forrest, Ambrose, Lustig, Izaguire, Johansen, Biton, Brown, a late flourishing Commons, Mulgrew

Level 4 verging on 3- Griffiths, Stokes, Matthews, Pukki, Kayal

    Level 4- journeymen and emerging- Henderson, Twardzik, Zaluska, Fisher, Boerigter, Balde, Rogic, Mouyokolo etc;

I think we have a stronger middle group without the extremes of MON’s squad at either end.

  25. I dinnae think the people of Zaire are getting too excited about the Froch v Groves fight. A tattooed arm really takes away from the spectacle, IMO, not that I’m a boxing fan anymore but I was drawn in last Saturday night watching, what I thought was the actual fight tomorrow.
