Building mainstays, lessons from yesterday

1164

Great news that Mikael Lustig and Emilio Izaguirre have extended their contracts until 2017.  Footballers’ careers flow on a few distinct tracks.  Some are too hot for their clubs to retain, Victor Wanyama, who declined a contract renewal with almost 3 years of his initial deal remaining, fell into this category.  Some, like Georgios Samaras, will represent diminishing value to their clubs, and attract only diminishing contracts.

I could make an argument that the players in the third category, who are highly valuable to their club, but are not so valuable that they are impossible to retain, are more important than the latter.

It’s important for Celtic to have outstanding achievers (especially up front) but clubs find it difficult to remain on-strategy if they have significant churn each season.  Transfer income is great, and often needed, but ideally you would look at your squad around this time of the year and want to change no more than 3 players over the summer.

I reckon Celtic should be able to hold onto Lustig, Izaguirre, Matthews, Ambrose, Brown, Commons, Mulgrew, Stokes and Forrest until the club want to move them on.  These players are the mainstay of our squad, hopefully Johansen will prove to be too.  Forster and van Dijk fall into the same category as Wanyama and Hooper – they will have high paying options in England.

Forster and van Dijk will help get us into and compete in the Champions League, but two or three gems are useless if they are surrounded by players less polished bling.

The last 24 hours has been a salutary lesson on what will continue to happen until Celtic appoint a manager.  The Daily Mail got the ball rolling when someone told them Roy Keane was leaving Dublin to speak to Celtic.  This was good information, in as much as it was true, Celtic did meet Roy Keane, but the ‘paper put inappropriate weight upon it.

Soon everyone and their dog was reporting the deal was done.  Which surprised Celtic.

Today’s news – there is no news.

‘News’ will continue to break and eventually one story will actually be the news we’re waiting for.  There is value (reputation and advertising) in rushing out with a story before it’s confirmed or others are doing the same, and little consequence (zero damage to reputation and you get to keep the ad money) in getting it wrong, so stay tuned for the next instalment.  Only this week, Pope Francis was talking about papal retirement, maybe he has another gig in mind.

NTV’s George of the jungle played for a team called the sickie psychos who used to get hammerred by the Winchburgh punks.

  7. Squire we had 2 busses to Nottingham. One stayed the night before in derby ( I was on that one) and the other went down and back

We were quite lucky in that we used the goverment grant to register 120 members with supporters association and thus we got a large no of tickets

  8. So let’s see if I have this right.

If Celtic go for an exciting, box-office manager, his appointment is purely about putting bums on seats.

What if they appoint an unimaginative, talentless, unmotivated manager? Will that meet with the approval of the moaning minnies?

Or is it a case of, as I believe, if they appoint the former, they will have nothing to moan about? Probably.

    Following my last letter to the SFA ( which you can read here ) http://www.tsfm.net/an-honest-game-convince-us/comment-page-2/#comment-16425 , I have now had a reply from the SFA and copy it here for your information as promised ;

    Dear Mr X,

Mr Regan is aware of your letter and he has asked me to confirm to you that we do not enter into correspondence or dialogue with third parties on sensitive matters relating to our member clubs. As such, we will not be replying to your letter.

If you wish to identify which area of Scottish football you are a sponsor of, Stewart would be happy to discuss this exchange with the relevant party directly.

    Kind regards,

So there you have it , the SFA hiding behind third party confidentiality to enable them not to have to answer some of the most relevant questions that not just the sponsors of Scottish football , but the supporters of Scottish football deserve to hear.

I wonder how often this 3rd party confidentiality gets used by them in their attempts to refuse to face up to the truths ?

So what now for me I hear you say ? What are my options ?

If you have read my letter to SFA you will have no doubt seen that I Intimated that It would not be my preference to speak directly to the owners of the club I sponsor for obvious reasons. Mr Regan has no doubt picked up on this as the last line of his reply basically says ” tell me who the club are and I’ll talk to them directly” .

Yes I’m sure you will Mr Regan , I’m sure you will !

So do I walk away now that I’m faced with the truthful fact that the SFA are not allowed under their rules to discuss to 3rd parties , information on member clubs ?

I’m sure that’s what Mr Regan desperately wants , but the answer to that question is….not a hope in hell !

I will indeed bite the bullet and go direct to the owner of the club and sit down with them to go through my letter and my concerns and hope that they will be helpful towards me and can take up my case on my behalf and ask the very same questions that I have . So largely , the fate of my letter lies with the club that I currently sponsor, I hope that the fear of losing a substantial 5 figure sum in sponsorship next season may swing it in my favour and persuade them to help .

Now here’s another thing that has come to my attention in the last couple of weeks regarding my club approaching the SFA on my behalf.

Some of you may already have picked up on this , what are the probabilities of the club I’m sponsoring deciding to support me fully , then going to the SFA with the questions , then getting the same reply as I did with regards to 3rd party confidentiality ? I’d say the club almost certainly will get the same reply simply because as has previously been identified, certain people within the SFA are now in totally self defence mode and will stop at nothing to hide the truth so as to protect their own failings.

So what next if even the club cannot get answers when they go to the SFA ? Does that mean curtains for me and you and our quest for answers and for truth and transparency ?

Well actually no it doesn’t . And here’s why .

My lawyer just happens to be a very well versed man in sports law and on discussing this matter with him a couple of weeks back he assures me that there is a part of the UEFA regs which states that if the club is not happy with the ruling body’s decisions or behaviour they can go direct to UEFA and ask them to Intervene . I have not read up on the UEFA regs myself so will trust that one of the regular posters on here can help with the relevant regulation which covers this .

So all is not lost if SFA play their next card as expected, there is a further avenue to explore. And the question would need to be asked at that point , would the SFA want UEFA looking into their internal dealings ?

Of course, going back to the original point, it all depends on whether the club has the appetite to take things this far . Time will tell but one thing is for sure , this man will not give in until he is absolutely certain that every option available to him has been explored.

I get a very uneasy feeling about our governing bodies the more and more things that come out of the closet . Recent revelations on twitter from guys like Celtic Research and Paul Larkin do not make for good reading . I was also aware of a twitter spat between the SFA’s Darryl Broadfoot and the twitter account Moo_ted in which Moo_ted asked a simple question to Broadfoot ” when can the sponsor expect a reply to his letter”? , to which Broadfoot replied ” what letter? What sponsor”? . When all along Mr Broadfoot knew exactly what letter and what sponsor as he had discussed it only days before with Angela Haggerty of the Drum prior to Angela running with the story in The Drum. When this fact was pointed out to Broadfoot he then became very condescending towards the questioner .

It is these type of things which make me feel very uneasy and suspicious of the ruling bodies and I think that is mirrored across the whole of Scottish football. The fact that they cannot see the need for the questions to be answered tells it’s own story.

I will look forward to the meeting with my club and will update you on any developments .

As I have said previously , if we don’t do anything then nothing will happen. If we do something then something might happen.

    Wish me luck.

  13. BSR – was hoping to move to the ole South Stand after 18 years in the Upper North. It was either change or give up season card and pick n choose games. Think they are open until 5pm, so I’ll probably head back to the ground later.

    Sons of Truth

Quite disgusting behaviour from Sons of Struth and their followers. Last night i was made aware that a number of them were “onto me” and that they had been searching in my archives, history and settings to trace my “real name”. Some of it was written on here which you will all have read and some of it conducted privately.

For the record, my real name is John Wallace. Well part of it is. The truth is, that is my first 2 names, and i have a 3rd AND 4th name as well.

As i have stated in the past on here, right at the start, my friend, a real good blue-nose, 25+ year season ticket holder, helped create this page for me and has no idea what im posting, but he is now concerned given the comments last night that he has left some sort of trail to his account on here.

I most certainly dont want him to get caught up in anything or getting the blame for anything i write, not that he doesnt trust me and not that i have anything to be frightened of in my writing anyhow.

So, your blackmail attempts will not work. Your private threats of “be silent or else we will reveal” will not work either.

Reveal what you have found. If you have tracked down my real surname only, then it stays. If you have tracked down my friends name, then this page will be closed for good.

Reveal away and while your at it, try and justify why you are attempting to silence someone only wishing to get the facts out there, by blackmail.

And if anyone is wondering why i put my first 2 names and not my surname up, then you only need to read the comments elsewhere and this attempt to get at/blackmail me to understand why.

Roy Keane – just my view:

Obviously a Worldwide respected footballer – no question one of the best and one of us ( at the end of his career) so there is suggestion that we should be happy to get him

But he is not my first choice for the following 3 reasons

    1) He got Sunderland promoted but his management style “bullying – publicly criticising players and removing himself completely from the players” – meant he lost the respect of the players/dressing room – it was only ever down hill from there

    2) Ipswich no impact at all again no relationship with players – nobody would die (metaphorically) for him

    3) He just looks like a miserable bastard – nobody seems to like him – how many people come out and say what a great guy good with young player etc – also not sure I would fancy a pint with him – I’ve never seen him smile

So if he is to be our Manager he gets my 100% support (I had a few issues when Lennon fist became our Manager – but I supported him) but my message to Roy Relax a bit Smile Enjoy the occasion FFS Roy lighten up – get a positive atmosphere going

Roy when some people walk into a room with other people a light comes on (metaphorically)

Roy when some people walk OUT of a room with other people a light comes on
