Calibre gap, Uefa intervention, Celtic authors and bampots

575

We’ve been told since the summer not only that this season’s Championship would be more competitive than the Premiership (last week we covered the fact that it’s the least competitive league in Britain), but that the gap between the top of the Championship and the top of the Premiership would be narrow.

Hearts are probably a better team than we’ve seen in our two cup meetings with them this season, but they have proven to be hopelessly ill-prepared to face a European-calibre team.  Hamilton, Motherwell, Aberdeen, Inverness and Dundee have all given Celtic vastly more difficult challenges.

Robbie Neilson is doing well and his team will step-up to the Premiership challenge next year but they are not playing week-in-week-out at the pace necessary to tackle Celtic face on, as they did yesterday.

Following on from Saturday’s article, I heard today that Celtic’s relationship with Ujpest Doza, which saw Willie McStay leave his coaching role at Celtic to become Ujpest manager, was ended after complaints to Uefa about what was no more than unofficial links between the clubs.  Uefa informed the clubs that only one would be entitled to compete in European competition if their planned extended cooperation took place.

In the event a complaint was made to Uefa, clear blue water would be required between clubs Mike Ashley has an interest in.

Many thanks to the many authors, publishers and bampots in the Celtic community who are now involved with the CQNBookstore, which now had 29 books and DVDs available.

As well as the CQN books, like the CQN Annual, Caesar & the Assassin, Seville, All the Best by Tommy Gemmell and Heart of Lion by Willie Wallace, there’s Cartuja’s Internet Bampots, Paul Dyke’s The Quality St Gang, John Hughes irrepressible autobiography, two books by Ian McCallum on how the Glasgow Irish founded a football club, and on those who went to the Great War, signed copies of Archie Macpherson’s definitive Jock Stein biography, the Sean Fallon and Chris Sutton biographies, an absolute treasure chest of Celtic DVDs and beanie hats for Mary’s Meals!

We’re hoping to add more in due course. Fill your boots.

    Hi ghuys

I posted at 10.42 on the last blog maybe too early for some

about a pair of white football boots that were donated to wee

Jinky in his heyday and big Jock would not let him wear them

as he didn’t want him thinking he was better than anybody

else in the team, as the wee magician was my ultimate hero

this type of thing fascinates me.

Are the boots still at the club on show?

who donated them was it a sponsor?

    Can anyone enlighten me further?

  6. I see common sense prevails and there will be no investigation of Guidetti for “diving”. All post match Sky analysis and all the MSM comments talk about the red card and the penalty. Not a word anywhere about the perfectly good goal that Kris scored which was disallowed. In a sense that was a bigger injustice than awarding a penalty. The penalty still has to be converted in order to get a goal, a good goal chalked off is an immediate loss.

Interesting rule from the French League on punishment for a straight red card following a reckless or dangerous tackle causing injury.

The ban is decided by a panel who wait until the nature of the injury is understood with guidelines for the ban to equal the number of games the injured player will miss.

Put an opponent out for three months and you get banned for three months.

    ————-

    No, that’s just wrong.

Henrik broke his leg making a tackle and there was no foul involved. Scott Brown suffered a horrendous tackle in a European game when I swear his leg must have been made of rubber not to snap. No injury but the a red card and should have seen the guy in prison never mind suspended.

Extent of injury is no indication of the severity of the offence.

As I say, throw a punch at someone on the park and its a red card. If the guy ducks and no contact is made, why should the punishment be any different than if it breaks someone’s jaw?

I don’t think I explained it very well.

The French system sits on top of existing disciplinary procedures and is used in cases where it’s deemed a players injury was a direct result of a dangerous or reckless challenge. I guess the motivation behind it is to both deter players from making this type of challenge and punish those who do to the same extent as their victims have been injured.

Not sure Henriks leg break is relevant.

The tackle on Brown was Binya of Benfica in the Champions League for which he served a six game ban due to the serious nature of challenge. Had the tackle happened in the SPL he would have probably got three games, had the tackle happened under the French system he would have got whatever their standard ban is unless Brown was seriously injured as a result in which case the ban gets extended to cover the length of the injury.

I don’t think throwing a punch is covered by rules concerning dangerous or reckless tackles.

No system is perfect but it is interesting to see how the French approach the problem. In Scotland we still debate whether these challenges merit a red card.

I think when a player is injured/ stitches needing treatment and the offending player gets a booking

i think he should be off the park too , till the injured player retuns to the field of play , just a thought….

  13. Cathedral, yes I understood that it was the French who were looking at it.

My contention is that the extent of the injury should in no way affect the length of the punishment. I was citing example s of how an innocuous tackle can lead to a severe injury whereas a brutal foul can result in no injury.

And therefore my opinion is that it shouldn’t form part of the consideration for the punishment given.

Kennedy’s injury would mean the offender would never play again? As much as that sounds just, in reality that can’t be correct.

I don’t see why the extent of the injury cannot be taken into account in some circumstances especially where the threat of a three match ban isn’t enough to stop players trying to deliberately injure opponents.

When a player launches into a dangerous or reckless challenge they’re taking a risk. Yellow or red? 1 match ban or 3? The French system simply increase the risk factor, 3 match ban or 10?

Would the Romanian thug have done that to JK if a possible outcome was a 6 or 12 month ban?

I guess the alternative is to increase the mandatory ban for dangerous challenges irrespective of the outcome. I’ve no problem with that.

Agree that there should be more severe punishment for more severe offences.

And everyone who watches football can clearly distinguish between a mistimed tackle, a reckless challenge and a vicious challenge where intent is obvious regardless of how many defend him by saying he’s not kind of player.

  20. Having had the accounts analysed by qualified accountants, we feel it is important to bring Rangers fans’ attention to the disgraceful reality of the retail deal which has been entered into with Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct,” the statement says. “Despite the loyalty of the Rangers fans seeing £7.6million spent on retail in the year covered by the accounts, the club’s share of that spending is a paltry £590k.

“The accounts also reveal that Rangers Retail has an obligation to purchase stock at a higher price than it is able to be sold at. In the second half of the year covered by the accounts, it appears that the portion of profit due to the club is an unbelievable £2k. The much maligned JJB agreement, our previous retail deal, made the club a minimum of £4.8m a year, over eight times the amount we are making from Sports Direct. It is also not clear whether the club has yet received a penny of the £590k it is due or whether it is still retained within Rangers Retail.

“In light of the information revealed in the accounts, we urge fans to stop buying merchandise from club stores, which are now under Mr Ashley’s full control or being shut down, and Sports Direct. Your loyalty is being abused and the club is not benefitting from the money you are pouring into Mr Ashley’s pockets.”

  26. If the player who commited a foul was forced to leave the park until the player he fouled came back on could leave the way open for some cheating.

For example if Lionel Messi fouled someone in the first minute of the game the extent of the injury could be exaggerated and 89 minutes of treatment later comes back on.
