Calibre gap, Uefa intervention, Celtic authors and bampots

575

We’ve been told since the summer not only that this season’s Championship would be more competitive than the Premiership (last week we covered the fact that it’s the least competitive league in Britain), but that the gap between the top of the Championship and the top of the Premiership would be narrow.

Hearts are probably a better team than we’ve seen in our two cup meetings with them this season, but they have proven to be hopelessly ill-prepared to face a European-calibre team.  Hamilton, Motherwell, Aberdeen, Inverness and Dundee have all given Celtic vastly more difficult challenges.

Robbie Neilson is doing well and his team will step-up to the Premiership challenge next year but they are not playing week-in-week-out at the pace necessary to tackle Celtic face on, as they did yesterday.

Following on from Saturday’s article, I heard today that Celtic’s relationship with Ujpest Doza, which saw Willie McStay leave his coaching role at Celtic to become Ujpest manager, was ended after complaints to Uefa about what was no more than unofficial links between the clubs.  Uefa informed the clubs that only one would be entitled to compete in European competition if their planned extended cooperation took place.

In the event a complaint was made to Uefa, clear blue water would be required between clubs Mike Ashley has an interest in.

Many thanks to the many authors, publishers and bampots in the Celtic community who are now involved with the CQNBookstore, which now had 29 books and DVDs available.

As well as the CQN books, like the CQN Annual, Caesar & the Assassin, Seville, All the Best by Tommy Gemmell and Heart of Lion by Willie Wallace, there’s Cartuja’s Internet Bampots, Paul Dyke’s The Quality St Gang, John Hughes irrepressible autobiography, two books by Ian McCallum on how the Glasgow Irish founded a football club, and on those who went to the Great War, signed copies of Archie Macpherson’s definitive Jock Stein biography, the Sean Fallon and Chris Sutton biographies, an absolute treasure chest of Celtic DVDs and beanie hats for Mary’s Meals!

We’re hoping to add more in due course. Fill your boots.

  1. Since the Sevco were formed they’ve had 8 home ties in SC and 4 away.

For the record since 2009 Celtic have had 15 out of 17 SC ties away from home…

I don’t believe there is any “fixing” in Cup game draws……..but statistically (one of my few areas of expertise), it seems nigh impossible that Sevco get some many home games and Celtic so many away from home. Thanks for your stats.

  4. I doubt the draws these days are rigged, what with all the live tele coverage.

But I have no doubts when they were done in days of yore behind closed doors……..

Given all the cheating and corruption we have been subjected to over the years, we are allowed a degree of paranoia.

Imagine the next time an ex Celt is doing the draw, he puts his hand in the bowl and touches a ball and recoils saying that it’s hot, their heeds would explode so they would.

  5. With regards to arsenal and them . many years ago did the Orange order not hold a rally of sorts annually at Highbury . , always Highbury no other stadium . I can remember that happening at the time . Adding my tuppence worth without reading back , so maybe been mentioned earlier

  6. I wonder why cup draws aren’t made by a similar method to the national lottery . Surely that would do away with the notion any wrong doing has gone on . And it would free up some former teddy bears to get gigs on Clyde , shortbread , and sky sports .

When I were a lad, a fair few years ago now, I always remember being told that Arsenal were the english establishment team.

This came from my Da who was not into football, but he knew a thing or two about the establishment, I can’t recall the rallys, but I would wager you are spot on.

    League reconstruction 1919 style!

Norris’s most infamous contribution to Arsenal’s history was his role in the club’s promotion from the Second Division to the First in 1919. Arsenal were elected to the top flight in spite of only finishing fifth the previous season (1914-15, as competition had been suspended for most of World War I). This promotion came at the expense of other clubs, most notably Arsenal’s arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur. It has been alleged that Norris bribed or in some way unduly influenced the voting members of the Football League, in particular the league chairman and owner of Liverpool, John McKenna;[8][9] at the League’s AGM, McKenna made a speech recommending Arsenal’s promotion ahead of Spurs thanks to the former’s longer spell in the League (Arsenal joined in 1893, Spurs in 1908. Although Preston North End & Wolves, who both finished ahead of Arsenal, had been members of the league longer than Arsenal, Wolves since its inception in 1888.[8] Although no firm proof has ever been offered, Norris’s other activities, including the scandal that led to his downfall, are often cited as circumstantial evidence. Some claim that Norris ‘bribed’ McKenna, although this is pure speculation. Probably more likely is that he lobbied McKenna, who fearful of Norris exposing the corruption in the league at the time (Utd and Liverpool were accused of fixing the last game of the season) yielded to Norris’s request to promote Arsenal to Division 1 based on their longer spell in the league and their professional status.[9]

  9. For the music lovers

    Morrissey was great tonight

‘Asleep’ was epic in an obviously depressing but ultimately uplifting way for anyone who touches depression as I do

  10. From Sheep discussion forum Back in February discussing fixed draws

“between 1960 and 1990 Celtic and R…….. were in the semi final of the league cup together on 15 occasions and drew each other only 3 times.

During this run, the majority of the time, R…… appeared to get the weakest team on paper. 1976 – Montrose, 1985 Meadowbank and 1990 Dunfermline.

In the Scottish Cup they were in the same draw 13 times in the same period and were drawn together once in 1960. Again they appeared to get a kind draw the majority of the time with 1982 semi being the best of the lot, Aberdeen getting a very good St Mirren side and the Hun getting Forfar.

The draws were made behind closed doors until the late 80’s.

I don’t think that the draw is fixed now but I did have a wry smile on my face when they got Albion at home.”

  11. I saw John Kennedy supporting JG on the news tonight. I think PL should make a statement calling out McCann for his outburst and demand that McCann apologise, cheap little shit that he is.

  12. Neil McCann sounds intelligent up to a point. That point is anyone disagreeing or seeing a chance to slate Celtic

I watched Souness, J Rednapp and J Carragher debate the loss to England.

Souness was hurt and upset which I liked. Carragher was wound up like a top ready to go

Graeme slagged Rooney a bit and Carragher let loose.

Jamie shat it and Graeme and Jamie settled and made sense thereafter

In Sco we get tits who rant vs Celtic and no-one does a Carragher as Stubbs should have

Last guy who did was Tom Boyd. Is he on TV now

    Hanks(hun and…)

  13. the onlooker,

And even when drawn against the mighty Albion (Rovers) at home, they still required the short lived rule of throwing the goalkeeper into the net with the ball in order to snatch a replay!

  14. There was also a Semi final draw from a few years back (6 or 7?) I have been racking my brains to remember which competition. I think Craig Brown was involved. The draw was live on BBC Scotland evening news . Straight over to Hampden no preamble . Short introduction of the participants. Four static balls sitting in large glass bowl….no customary swirl…. First ball is picked straight out of bowl.

I thought that looked a bit off….. But it got even more laughable when the second was drawn.

The second Stooge put his hand into bowl and gripped one of the balls, he didn’t pick it straight out,but held it whilst he swirled the balls , never let go ,then picked it out whilst the other two balls continued to wiz round and round. It was such an amateur ‘fix’ .

    Can anyone remember it?

  15. We have arguments among the panel all the time in Ireland. When I was in England it was bland

Is it hunnish in Scotland or useless?

When I am home it always looks ameteurish not biased.

    Move to RTE

  16. The Onlooker

The best one was Sophia Loren ‘cuddling’ the balls for Italia 90. My dad fainted

  17. Can I point out

We did more one two moves this weekend than a whole season under MON or WGS or NL

I love it and it is the sainted, fabled and seldom seen, Celtic way

PS. I looked at the 85 final. All Scottish except for Packie

  18. PSS

Watched the 86 LC Final again

We had 2 mid at FB and 2 strikers in mid.

    No wonder we lost!

Davie Hay was a hero to get so close to success. Peter Grant and Murdo at FBs!

Who was regular RB, not Danny?

You are right but didn’t it show a lack of planning? Great game though

I had a strange one last Thurs: I met a drunk bloke who claims Brian MvClair holds UEFA, CWC and CL medals

This is based on him being at Villa when 16

    Is this right?
