Can we push SPL fan power one step further?

854

Tomorrow’s Annual General Meeting of the Scottish Premier League is set to be the third great football meeting in the last two weeks.  The Prophet of Armageddon, chief executive Neil Doncaster, will face his shareholders and either have to declare he was being truthful when he told them, and Scottish Football League clubs, the SPL would be unable to fulfil their contractual obligations if Sevco were denied a place in the First Division, or that this was a cunning ruse designed to manipulate clubs and fans alike.

Doncaster was surely encouraged by some in the SPL to adopt his confrontational stance but support from SPL clubs was certainly not universal.  No representatives from Celtic participated in any meetings or conversations regarding the contents of the presentation made to SFL clubs, nor was the club informed or consulted on it.

Well done to the Aberdeen fans who kicked off the Sell-out Saturday initiative.  They hope to sell-out Pittodrie for their 11 August game and want to as many fans as possible to buy season tickets.  The idea has been picked up by clubs throughout the league.

I get the feeling that if supporters groups got together we could use this unique moment, when camaraderie among fans coincided with unparalleled fan power over the clubs, to define a framework for the game we wanted, not something a dreamt up by a Norfolk MBA.

Even if we couldn’t get every fan group pulling in the same direction, a few productive bilateral relationships is all it takes to establish an powerful pressure group.

Curtailing the progress of a rival is not sustainable either.

It’s far less complicated than Doncaster, Regan, Green, Duff and Phelps, the MSM et cetera seem to want us to believe.

The business is football, but in spite of what we often hear, it’s still a business. If you can build up a sufficient support base, you can generate revenue to run a business and have access to extra income streams such as sponsorship, television and prize money. But if you spend too much in the process, you either have to reduce your outgoings or, eventually, find something else to do.

No you’re not being heartless but I wasn’t promoting the idea as a supporter of Celtic, I was promoting the idea as a supporter of Scottish football; Celtic Supporters in solidarity and as one with all other teams in Scotland for the good of the growth of our game in Scotland. Further, I would hope that St Mirren and every other team in Scotland are very imaginative with their marketing over the next three years.

Perception and reputation are big tools but not as big as inclusiveness and drwing together in times of need.

Aberdeen Supporters are being very pro-active as are Hibs Supporters (I have not been to every clubs site).

But at the moment it looks like I would be the only Celtic Supporter on here who would be interested.

Perhaps showing their accounts to rangers in the hope that rangers would buy the directors out to gain an SPL place was a poor choice of marketing yourself to your own supporters.

Perhaps devioulsy plotting a scheme to breach football association rules and codes of morallity, while preaching about the importance of integrity was not a sure fire way to endear yourself to Scottish football fans.

Perhaps wailing about the sustainability of your football club and the negative effect on the product you’ll be able to deliver is not the way to increase the amount of season ticket holders.

I wouldn’t mind contributing to teams by visiting their ground when Celtic play them but I wouldn’t contribute a penny to a team that I don’t rust and believe that are involved in a devious scheme to help sevco.

The Rangers Football Club,[1] often referred to in the media as newco Rangers[3][4] and Rangers newco,[5][6] as well as just Rangers,[7] is a footballclub[8] based in Glasgow, formed to replace[9] theoriginal Rangers F.C., which entered liquidationprocedures on 14 June 2012.[10] Having purchased the assets and business interests of Rangers FC,[11] including the all-seated 51,082-capacityIbrox Stadium in south-west Glasgow, as well as the club’s name, several players agreed to have their contracts transferred to the club.[12] After an application to join the Scottish Premier League was rejected, an application to play in the Scottish Football League was accepted with the club being placed in the third division, though this has yet to be ratified by the SFA.

    HideHistory

    Formation

The club was formed on 29 May 2012 as a means for Charles Green to acquire the assets from the football club Rangers F.C., should it go into liquidation. Green agreed a deal with the administrators of Rangers to purchase its assets for a £5.5million fee if the projected CVA proposal was to fail. The CVA proposal was formally rejected on 14 June 2012,[13] hours later Green completed the purchase of the assets and various contracts which had belonged to the now-to-be liquidated Rangers for Sevco 5088 Ltd.[14] Sevco 5088 Ltd’s name was to be changed to “The Rangers Football Club Ltd.” on the same day but is disputed by Companies House.[15] Assets bought from Rangers F.C. included Ibrox Stadium, theMurray Park training facilities and other smaller assets.[16] The assets have since been transferred to a company called Sevco Scotland Ltd.[17]

    League application

The club formally applied to acquire the SPL share of Rangers F.C. on 18 June 2012. The SPL agreed to consider the request to transfer the share, but on 4 July, voted by 10–1 to reject the application.Kilmarnock abstained and the old Rangers club voted in favour.[18] Thereafter, an application to join the Scottish Football League was accepted with 25 of the 30 clubs voting that the club should be placed in Division Three.[19]

The club also applied for SFA membership on 29 June 2012, it being a requirement for a club to be an SFA member to be eligible to participate in the SFL or the Scottish Cup. The SFA has confirmed that it has “received an information pack from Sevco Scotland relevant to their membership application.”[20]

The club was granted an SFL License on 13 July 2012 at an SFL meeting. On the same day the club was also voted into the Scottish Third Division, rather than the Scottish First Division from the two options presented to the SFL member clubs. [21]This has yet to be ratified by the SFA.
