Celtic 1-0 Inverness

797

Joe Ledley scored the only goal of the game as Celtic restored their four point lead at the top of the SPL but although the visitors didn’t force a save from Fraser Forster this was a tight encounter for most of the afternoon.

The opening minutes firmly belonged to Celtic.  Georgios Samaras had a first minute shot deflected wide and Victor Wanyama headed narrowly over from the resultant Charlie Mulgrew corner kick.  Inverness’ first venture up-field forced Mulgrew into an important interception on the edge of the area to deny Nick Ross.

The best move of the game resulted in the only goal.  Gary Hooper combined with Adam Matthews before James Forrest collected wide on the left.  The winger raced forward and fired the ball across the face of goal for Joe Ledley to meet it at the back post and knock the ball home.  Back post runs have been particularly profitable for Ledley this season.

Four minutes later Charlie Mulgrew worked the goalkeeper with a free kick from just outside the angle of the box but Ryan Esson turned the ball over.

At half time Celtic could have reflected that despite enjoying the vast majority of possession their lead remained narrow; twin strikers Georgios Samaras and Gary Hooper didn’t have much of an opening.

Early in the second half referee McLean had his first major decision of the day when Richie Foran wrestled Scott Brown to the ground, after play at stopped, with an arm around Brown’s neck.  The incident deserved a yellow card but Foran was already booked and the ref took no action.  Five minutes later Daniel Majstorovic ambled towards a ball played over his head but Inverness striker Jonny Hayes flew past the Celtic defender forcing Majstorovic into a sliding tackle five yards from his box.  Despite making clear contact with the ball, and no protests from Hayes, who continued to chase, the assistant referee indicated to the ref McLean that Majstorovic fouled.  McLean showed the Swedish central defender, who was the last man, a straight red card.

Inverness pressed forward and forced Celtic to defend deeply but the visitors were unable to create a genuine chance.  On 73 minutes an Adam Matthews free kick from near the corner flag was cutback to Ki, who mishit his shot, which appeared to be going out for a throw in but Georgios Samaras chased the lost cause with some effect.

Catching the ball on the line Samaras spun and darted past Williams, who, already on a yellow card, bundled the Celtic striker off the field.  The referee, perhaps mindful of his earlier trigger-happy moment with Majstorovic and failure to punish Foran, gave Williams a second yellow.

Back on an equal man-count Celtic were never again put under pressure although Hayes caught the defence napping to latch onto a 40 yard pass but fired over.

Jinky Samaras could have wrapped up the points late on with a mazy run but he was unable to convert.

  1. Neil Lennon insists Celtic will appeal Daniel Majstorovic red card against Inverness

Feb 12 2012 Mark Guidi, Sunday Mail

NEIL LENNON last night blasted referee Steven McLean for his decision to send off Daniel Majstorovic in Celtic’s 1-0 win over Inverness.

The Sweden defender was given a straight red card for a tackle on Jonny Hayes which the official deemed to have denied Terry Butcher’s side a goalscoring opportunity.

McLean seemed to act on the advice of the standside assistant referee Stuart Macauley – but Lennon is likely to urge the club to appeal to get the card rescinded.

Lennon said: “I think Daniel got the ball. I’ve looked at the incident on TV and it’s certainly very debatable. How the linesman can give that is beyond me.

“I’ll speak to the club about appealing the decision.

“The linesman overruled the referee a few times. We were up against a number of things today, including the officials.”

Hayes thought the decision was harsh and said: “I think he is very unlucky. I think he played the ball first.

“After the tackle came in my immediate reaction was to get up and get back into my shape for the team.”

Lennon was delighted with the result thanks to Joe Ledley’s 16th-minute goal.

The win keeps Celts four points clear of Rangers at the top of the SPL – and it was their 17th straight victory in domestic competition.

Lennon said: “It wasn’t a vintage performance but it was solid. We had a tough game at Hearts during the week. But I was wary of this game as Inverness had a full week to rest and prepare.

“I’m thrilled for my players because it has been a very demanding week for them. They showed a great attitude out there. Things are going well at the minute.”

  2. Any significance in both the Herald and the Scotsman both publishing “what if . . .” scenarios this morning that purport to lay out the different scenarios for rangers depending on the tax case.

Nothing new in them at all, but could be suggesting that they are expecting a decision very soon.

  3. Christy Moore will be appearing on the Andrew Marr show this morning if anyone is watching it.

A lot of coverage of the death of Whitney Houston on all channels this a.m

Great team Turriff run by a bunch of great coaches.. Really looking forward to it always great games..and perfect G4 AstroTurf surface indoors… Still freezing mind you!

  5. Guidi claims that our manager “slammed” MacLean. Utter rubbish. Just shows how these “journalists” try to make life as difficult as possible for our manager. He actually supported him. Our manager felt MacLean had been let down by his linesmen. At least, that is what he told Radio Scotland after the game.

  6. I haven’t read back but I gather that there was some stuff written about Liverpool last night. As someone who has lived there on and off for more than 6 years, can I say that the Orange men no longer have any real support. They spend the 12th in Southport (where I have twice found myself at the same time). There are few, if any Scouse accents among them. They are mostly Glaswegian and the west of Scotland. By they bye, the first time I stood on the Kop (about 1967) they were still singing the Sash. Those days are long gone. Scousers are among the best and most welcoming people on this island. I know for a fact, that if either Everton or Liverpool are playing Man U, the whole city unites behind that team.

Truly the most pathetic grasping at straws was uttered by Doddsy yesterday while discussing Daniel Cousin signing

‘he could save Rangers season as far as the SPL title goes’

That’s how desperate they are…our taxes are paying for this standard of ‘punditry’…quite amazing!

  8. Good morning all from East Kilbride where it’s pretty much the same as yesterday, damp but currently dry and mild-ish.

  9. Ten Men Won The League on

18 year old striker Edinho Junior of Olhanense in Portugal, arrives in Glasgow tonight to spend a week training with the club with a view to signing for us in the summer

  10. Must admit my optimism over the death of the Huns is starting to evaporate.

There were a couple of postings o RTC yesterday that suggested a NewCo could NOT be pursued by HMRC even if it was transparently the “OldCo” by any other name…

As this is the obvious path for the Huns to take, it effectively means that NewCo RFC will only have to persuade the footballing authorities in Scotland to let them continue RFC’s membership of the SFA and SPL.

    Which I suspect they will.

And how depressing that the country’s only 2 broadsheet newspapers, discussing the case this morning, make no mention of the moral aspect of swindling the tax-payer out of tens of millions of pounds.

The next person that tells you Scotland is a cuddly, social-democratic haven…. point out how the country is preparing to pander to one of the most scandalous examples of turbo-Thatcherite corporate criminality ever seen….

  11. Neil Lennon played the media perfectly yesterday, there was no rant he just side-stepped the media with a deft, “the referee wasn’t helped by his linesman” quote.

Those media outlets that review the sending off without the quote have to be considered hostile. Neil is not only leading the SPL but he’s also leading the media.

Thanks for posting that , made good reading. What a state They are in and what a situation the whole of Scottish football is likely to face very soon because of their cheating ways. Makes my blood boil that the real villian in all this , David Murray , never gets mentioned in these kind of articles. Craig Whyte is Craig Whyte , he strips companys and makes a living from doing it , as we on here have known since day one. Would so love to see criminal proceedings against Murray and the rest of them for bringing Scottish football to this. Man was a maverick gambler with other peoples money , huge ego and egged on by the “we arra peepil” mentality. Let them die , scotland would be a better place for it. ………… walked past Jim Traynor yesterday on Argyle St when I was making my way to “Maggie Mays” before game, so hard not to say something to him ( thankfully Im a kinda quiet guy!!) lickspittle of the highest order

  15. The Inverness player Hayes has said Big Dan got the ball, case closed! The ref and both his assistants were a joke yesterday but he did make me laugh out loud when he measured out 7 yards to place the ICT wall. Perhaps the sun got to his head in La Manga.

Scott Brown was wrestled to the ground at one point in front of the North stand assistant, he took no action but during the match both Forrest and Ledley were totally bemused by his decisions and ‘advice’ to the ref.

    They are our biggest danger.

My childhood hero kenny Dalglish cut quite a pathetic figure in the post match interview yesterday, sad to see.

  16. roy croppie- It never fails to amaze me that refs cannot judge 10 yards, especially when you can clearly see the grass is “striped” in both directions in intervals of 6 yards, so it shouldn’t be too difficult, even for the hard of thinking, to work out a 10 yard gap.

But then again he proved later in the game he actually is well capable of working it out.

  17. goldstar10

he was even taking short steps, I really wished I had it on film. Made me laugh then I remembered he was cheating us!

  18. First post since the game yesterday, which I listened to on Radio Scotland. And even they were amazed by the performance of Mr McLean.

Three times before the red card I heard something like, “The ref blows his whistle, that’s a free kick to Celtic. Oh he’s given it to Inverness, I’m not sure why.” The third was followed by a discussion on the erratic nature of the officiating. The paranoid tim in me was sure that there was a clear pattern at work!

The commentary for the sending off initially said that it was a great tackle by Dan. Then there was surprise that the game had been stopped as Hayes had got up. Then amazement at the red card. In all of the discussion afterwards there was unanimity that McLean had seen something that simply wasn’t there.

I can’t wait for the appeal. How will they spin this one? The ref was clearly wrong.

The great thing is that our players continued to play and to work, and secured the three points regardless. This could have been the end of our great run, but they made sure that it continued. Well done, bhoys.

  19. Roy Croppie

From my vantage point he appeared

to have Scott in a headlock.

Not a yellow card then what is ?

    Buona Domenica tutti ——

Finally stopped raining , way down south . A lovely sunny day — most of you lot would find it warm .

Up early [ lots to do ] Watch yesterday’s game —–

    We won . 14 in a row !

One sweet move -one sweet goal —otherwise somewhat stodgy , flat and lacking a cutting edge.

Laughably bad and inconsistent Officiating [ yet again !] Incompetent ? ? Ignorant of The Rules of the Game ? Cheating toe rags ?

Onwards and upwards . Keep on keeping on . Yes to liquidation . No to Newco. Yes to Sircumcision.

Scott Brown is impressing me in every match. In the past he would have reacted to that assault and received a yellow or red to add to the injustice but he’s matured.

It was a booking at least and if you consider what Scott has been sent off for in the past…

  26. Im amazed at the description of Forans headlock on Scott Brown as a yellow card

Its a clear cut unequivocal red card for that kind of action.

  27. We are pashing in the wind regarding scottish referees otherwise known as mibs, there is obviously some change some of the time but it’s grudging, you can smell it a mile away. There seems to be an endless conveyor belt of anti Celtic referees ably supported with every stroke of the LLs keyboards and Jabbas fat controller agenda setting, i don’t see that changing anytime soon. To think this is what we will always be up against depresses me in the extreme.
