Celtic 1-0 Inverness

797

Joe Ledley scored the only goal of the game as Celtic restored their four point lead at the top of the SPL but although the visitors didn’t force a save from Fraser Forster this was a tight encounter for most of the afternoon.

The opening minutes firmly belonged to Celtic.  Georgios Samaras had a first minute shot deflected wide and Victor Wanyama headed narrowly over from the resultant Charlie Mulgrew corner kick.  Inverness’ first venture up-field forced Mulgrew into an important interception on the edge of the area to deny Nick Ross.

The best move of the game resulted in the only goal.  Gary Hooper combined with Adam Matthews before James Forrest collected wide on the left.  The winger raced forward and fired the ball across the face of goal for Joe Ledley to meet it at the back post and knock the ball home.  Back post runs have been particularly profitable for Ledley this season.

Four minutes later Charlie Mulgrew worked the goalkeeper with a free kick from just outside the angle of the box but Ryan Esson turned the ball over.

At half time Celtic could have reflected that despite enjoying the vast majority of possession their lead remained narrow; twin strikers Georgios Samaras and Gary Hooper didn’t have much of an opening.

Early in the second half referee McLean had his first major decision of the day when Richie Foran wrestled Scott Brown to the ground, after play at stopped, with an arm around Brown’s neck.  The incident deserved a yellow card but Foran was already booked and the ref took no action.  Five minutes later Daniel Majstorovic ambled towards a ball played over his head but Inverness striker Jonny Hayes flew past the Celtic defender forcing Majstorovic into a sliding tackle five yards from his box.  Despite making clear contact with the ball, and no protests from Hayes, who continued to chase, the assistant referee indicated to the ref McLean that Majstorovic fouled.  McLean showed the Swedish central defender, who was the last man, a straight red card.

Inverness pressed forward and forced Celtic to defend deeply but the visitors were unable to create a genuine chance.  On 73 minutes an Adam Matthews free kick from near the corner flag was cutback to Ki, who mishit his shot, which appeared to be going out for a throw in but Georgios Samaras chased the lost cause with some effect.

Catching the ball on the line Samaras spun and darted past Williams, who, already on a yellow card, bundled the Celtic striker off the field.  The referee, perhaps mindful of his earlier trigger-happy moment with Majstorovic and failure to punish Foran, gave Williams a second yellow.

Back on an equal man-count Celtic were never again put under pressure although Hayes caught the defence napping to latch onto a 40 yard pass but fired over.

Jinky Samaras could have wrapped up the points late on with a mazy run but he was unable to convert.

    I told you all about the impending Newsnight story last Sunday.

    This Sunday I will tell you this…..I will tell you this boy……..

    The Glasgow Herald will be largely responsible for deforestation in Brazil by the end of this week

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Rumours that The Herald has been sittingon/further researching a story,so it may be out in the open soon.
  4. The ONLY thing I would say for Butcher is that at least ICT have a go when they play the huns. Which is more than can be said for Stuart McCall’s Motherwell.
    But there is no doubt Butcher’s reaction to defeats against us are of that of a deranged madman.
  5. Moonbeams, likewise good to meet you and other caners yesterday. Thanks again, happy to contribute and there’s the fat bhoys bash in a few weeks where there’ll be a chance to do more.
    Nephews buzzing and thrilled yesterday – naturally, it was their first ‘tic game after all!
    Good to be a Celt first and foremost; imagine supporting them, or a side with apologist managers like Inverness or Motherwell.
    Eye on the prize Lenny and his young lions!
  6. Butchers reaction as ICT manager when they suffer defeat against us mirror image that of his reactions when he was at mordor.
    He cant help it, its blatant hatred borne from his indoctrination with the hordes
    Blame that one on Catholic Schools.
    But what can we the support do that’s not already been done and still it continues ?
    The custodians of the club surely must be pig sick of coming up against a brick wall and unable to get over it, they should hang a left and keep walking till they get to the end of it and motor on, obstacle removed, they should look seriously at either leaving for another league, bringing in foreign referees to our league or lobbying Uefa to introduce a system in Europe whereby there’s a pool of referees from all the competing nations spread round all the leagues, just like there are players from lots of countries playing here, why not referees too ?
    Our Club, board and support are probably/possibly in the strongest position that we’ve ever been in, so as you say “if we as a support continue to put up with this level of crap from the S.F.A. refereeing fraternity we deserve everything we get.”
    ,,,,PFAyr……that, in a nutshell, is what we are up against …… and part of the reason bhun admonistration / liquidation is the only way to get anything resembling ‘fairness’ in this Country … Football has never been treated as a SPORT in this Country……it is a vehicle for expressing bias and bigotry… what will they do when their favourites, who CHEATED Scottish Football / Taxman for so many years, finally ‘bite the dust’ …?
  20. Sandman Is Neil Lennon on
    Is big bawface Butcher still sitting in the away dugout, petted lip and pure beelin’?
    Can someone tell him to shift his big larderse so the cleaners can get in?
  21. I have watched the site for 2 years know and never felt the need to comment, however after watching the posts from yesterdays games thought I would put my tuppence in.
    It took us 2 years to find a central defence, that consisted of Charlie Muldini and A.N. Other. This changed in the second half against Falkirk when Izzy was subbed and Charlie moved to Left Back. Charlie is not good at left back. He is good going going forward but defensively gets turned both inside and outside. This means Joe Ledley quite often has to pick up the pieces, negating Joes midfield duties.
    We started yesterday with 2 centre half both not match fit, Wilson played 180 mins in 3/4 months, Dan 20 mins on Wednesday before yesterday, boy did it show.
    Earlier in the season we played either Adam Mathews or Joe Ledley at LB leaving Charlie in the centre. We even signed a new LB, Blackman, remember him? All would have been better than moving CM out of his best position.
    Kelvin Wilson needs to grow a set, he has been bullied by every team we have played, Higdon even beat him for pace, Big Dan always feels the need to be clumsy and put hands all over the striker. One of them plus Mulgrew might do a job, both together are not good enough.
    Before anyone says we won the games, I know, however the confidence in this team comes from the back as the midfield are so detached from the strikers, Charlie pushes them further up the park, the other 2 invite teams on as they do not want to leave space in behind.
    Maybe I should have stayed lurking!
  22. tigertim
    I hope to see Charlie back in the centre of defence soon alongside Rogne. Izzy I believe is still working on his fitness hopefully he’ll return and free Charlie from the LB slot.
    Where is Lustig? Looking forward to seeing him play.
  23. tigertim
    welcome aboard, valid points, like CM in defense
    Havent heard much about Blackman since he joined, all quiet there.
    I must say I agree entirely with your post Charlie at CH every game, the last goal I remember us lossing away from home was M/well – Charlie has played CH every game since then – he is most definitely not a left back.
