Celtic came from behind to beat Rennes in the Europa League tonight with two goals from Anthony Stokes and a late finish from Gary Hooper. Rennes took the lead after 85 seconds when Kader Mangane converted a corner with a fine header.
Rennes pushed forward from kick-off and Julien Feret’s bullet corner kick evaded Victor Wanyama. This in turn deceived Daniel Majstorovic allowing Mangane to meet the ball and redirect it into the top corner of the goal.
Losing the early goal direct from a corner, for the second time in four Europa League games, seemed to sap Celtic’s confidence as Rennes pushed forward with confidence in the opening 30 minutes. During this period Rennes goalkeeper, Benoit Costil, touched the ball only once, to cut out a cross from James Forrest. Celtic were disjointed and no one seemed keen to receive or hold the ball.
Celtic needed a break and it came from James Forrest, not for the first time this season. The Celtic midfielder evaded two challenges and created space for a shot 25 yards out on the corner of the box. Costil, who had perhaps lost concentration during his long period as a spectator, stopped the shot but allowed it to rebound back into play, instead of turning it around the post. Anthony Stokes was on hand to pounce and turn the ball into the empty net.
Two minutes from half time Celtic took the lead when Georgios Samaras flicked on a Fraser Forster clearance which was missed by Mangane. Stokes collected outside the box and finished confidently with his left foot into the corner of the net.
Having dominated most of the first half Rennes would have wondered how they were behind at half time but the second half was a different game. Celtic came out with more fight than finesse but as the half progressed they played some of their best football of the season.
Neil Lennon’s injury problems were compounded when Glenn Loovens failed to return for the second half but the manager will be delighted by the debut of 17-year-old central defender Marcus Fraser, who threw himself into the game like an experienced professional.
Adam Matthews, Celtic’s other teenage defender, typified the home teams’ resurgence. He managed to maintain his cool under pressure with 28,000 fans nervously looking on.
Gary Hooper replaced the tiring James Forrest and wrapped things up for Celtic on 82 minutes. The striker collected a clearance under pressure in the centre circle and found Samaras in space on the left wing. Memories fleetingly flashed to mind of a similar break against Udinese when Samaras passed up a chance to make a decisive break but today the Greek was not to be denied. He played an inch-perfect pass into the path of the onrushing Hooper who met it 13 yards from goal, controlled and knocked it past Costil.
On 66 minutes Kris Commons replaced Paddy McCourt, who struggled to get into the game. Yann M’Vila, distributed the ball with great effect for Rennes and mopped up lots in central midfield but he failed to take account for ‘Tenacious C’, Commons, and collected his second yellow in the final minutes as the Celtic midfielder nipped the ball away from him.

ABERDEEN WIN APPEAL OVER COLLUM RED CARD

The SFA’s Fast Track Disciplinary system has downgraded Rory Fallon’s red card from Willie Collum in the game against Rangers to a yellow.
Fallon was given a straight red by the eagle-eyed whistler following a collision with Rangers defender Dorin Goian with the game poised at 2-1 to Rangers.
A yellow card would still have resulted in the dismissal of Fallon but such was his enthusiasm to send the player off Collum issued a red card.
Commenting on the appeal from Aberdeen against violent conduct the SFA stated: “The Disciplinary Tribunal rescinded the sending-off and substituted a caution.”
Fallon will still be suspended for Aberdeen’s match on Monday at St Johnstone but will have less points added to his disciplinary record.
No further retrospective action will be taken in relation to other incidents in the match.

Marcus Fraser’s u-19 team-mates were the first to praise his Celtic debut.
A first half injury to Glenn Loovens saw the teenager thrown in for his first team debut alongside Daniel Majstorovic as Celtic’s under strength side completed a great comeback to win 3-1 against Rennes.
Callum McGregor was on the bench and was thrilled to see his team-mate get a chance on the big stage tweeting: “Delighted for@marcusfraser75 great performance tonight when called upon. #manymoretocome.”
Striker Tony Watt, who attends college with Fraser and others in the u-19 squad added: “Delighted for @marcusfraser75 great guy deserved to get on.”
On loan striker Greig Spence tweeted: “Buzzing for @marcusfraser75. Making his debut for celtic tonight and played class!”
The player himself tweeted: “Great night, never thought it would come this quick #lovedit.”
Fraser’s debut had natashameikle suddenly feeling her age when she tweeted: “Half our back 4 were younger than me. Marcus Fraser is only 17. Massively impressed by him!
Also feeling his age was veteran supporter frankie_67 who realised: “how to feel your age -Marcus Fraser came on as a half-time sub for Celtic tonight. He was BORN in 1994! Good feckin god.”
Bedrockbhoy tweeted: “Amazing what happens when we introduce a bit of class and composure to the team. Well done Marcus Fraser.”
Former class-mate flannybaws added: “Excellent performance tonight. Marcus Fraser getting a game was great. The boy used to be in my class before he left.#claimtofame.”
Fraser will miss tomorrow’s u-19 match against Aberdeen, kick-off 1.30pm at Barrowfield, but hopes to drop in on the match after training with the first team at Lennoxtown.
On Monday night Celtic’s u-19 side face Manchester City in the Next Gen Series at Celtic Park, tonight City lost 4-1 away to Barcelona and lost 4-2 at home to Celtic last month.

What’s interesting is the card was downgraded to a yellow. This means the review panel says Collum got it wrong.
We need to go after this MIB highlighting his many decisions which strangely always favour Rangers.
He is a disciple of Dallas and he needs to go.

Ive posted every morning this week for Celtic to play 1 or 2 of the young team, theyre all as good as Marcus, so I’d be introducing them all sooner rather than later, seen them ripping a Man city apart 4-2 away from home…. awesome….. 10 times the commitment of our expensive 1st team, if Celtic announced they were playing theyre under 19’s tonight I would have travelled up for the game…… thats the strength of my feelings.

Rogne had a great game at the weekend…so we still have issues in defence. Rogne has earned his place when we’re back in the SPL. Lenny has had a nightmare to deal with in injuries.
Some fholk have been making this crucial point. There’s a reason why we are heavily afflicted by injuries which dwarf the comparable stats at other SPL clubs.
When you look at in detail, it’s disgusting.
But as you know, it was ever thus.

You’re right.
They are still “at it” albeit ever so subtle at times. The difference in the way referees officiate against Celtic as opposed to Rangers is night and day.
We need to continually highlight their inconsistencies (cheating) and go after them at every opportunity.
I agree with Auldheid…….we need to completely restructure things and bring in referees from other places and make them more accountable.
We will never get a level playing field with the cheating we are continually exposed to by the MIB. It has to change.
