Celtic-Atletico programme as 40,000 hearts beat as one

639

Our  unofficial Celtic v Atletico Madrid match programme is now available.  We preview tomorrow’s match as well as the other game in our group between Rennes and Udinese, as well as a look back 37 years to that infamous game against Atletico in the European Cup semi-final.

European nights have always been special in my Celtic supporting time.  When I was a boy they would fill Celtic Park whereas it was predominantly empty on domestic duty.  The modern era brought great Uefa Cup and Champions league moments but for a while, even at the peak of our Champions League prowess, the stadium lost something to corporate interests.  I remember watching fans walk out of the stadium with 10 minutes on the clock when we were drawing 0-0 with Milan!

Tomorrow night will be more like the great days I remember, when every soul inside the ground was plugged into the nervous anticipation that pumps through all our veins.

Atletico Madrid occupies a similar place in our history to Rapid Vienna.  If you were around during the 70s and 80s, when these two clubs eliminated Celtic on their way to European finals, by violence and dishonesty respectively, games against these clubs will have an added dimension.  Two years ago we finished above a decent Rapid team in the Europa League group stage who had already dumped Martin O’Neill’s Aston Villa.  When Scott McDonald’s goal went in I raised my arms and inadvertently punched the safety ladder at the back of the North Stand, the cut knuckles and bruising lasted weeks.  It was a stupid incident but captures the, 40-odd-thousand-people-one-heartbeat, phenomenon that we get to experience too seldom in our lives.

I’m going to look out the hoops tonight, been ages since I’ve worn them.  Bring on Atletico, Falcao ‘n’ all.

I agree in general they need to be coached better on what to say but the Club are contracted to conduct press conferences and supply players. Players chat about the football and their positive attitude. This is then spun by the press however they like. This gets headlined, and no doubt pinned on opposition dressing room walls.

But it is not just Celtic players. Just a few weeks ago Jelavic talked about 12 points being a big enough cushion to see them through.

The PR team should be giving a bit of gentle coaching. The abrupt way Gary Hooper was chased from his seat by one of our PR staff last week when the singing was brought up was a bit silly. Why not a briefing beforehand allowing him to deflect it rather than looking like a primary 3 being chased from the playground. But again, the BBC decided to show that part of the press conference and not the chat about football, so it’s not all the Club’s fault, it’s the nature of the beast in Scotland. And it’s why when you hear journalists saying “Let’s get back to the football” that you know they have lost any argument and all credibility.

Good Morning to the Celtic family from a dull but dry Central Scotland. WGS I agree with you completely if you or I were in McCoists situation you would cut Kayals comments from the news paper and pin them in the Ibrox dressing room.If brains were made of dynamite most players wouldnt have enough to blow there nose.Kayal and the Celtic players words are cheap so do your talking on the park. H.H.

  10. All this hogwash about Kayal is simply that.

He has not come out and said “Celtic are better than Rangers in every department”. That is Daily Record tripe to try and fire up their heroes fro the weekend because their “wonderkids” got beat last night.

Kayal IS correct when he says “Last season we played the best football in the country” – very hard to argue against and the best footballing side doesn’t always win – ask Arsenal.

    He also said:

We looked to win the league last season but didn’t. I hope this time everyone can do their best to win everything in the country and do well in Europe. We are coming back to playing the right way. “We can play the best football because we have the best squad and the best players in this country.”

    Well Snake says:

There is nothing wrong with confidence. He says we CAN win all these things not we WILL. Therein lies the difference from – 12 points is enough or the league is over. Kayal also says “I hope this time everyone can do their best to win everything in the country and do well in Europe”. There is not one iota of certainty in this statement, merely a wish for greater glory and there is nothing wrong with it.

And before Keevins starts his Celtic are forever telling everyone what they are going to do mantra I would remind him to re-read the comments. The only thing that is certain is that the boy feels we have the best players in Scotland and I for one agree with him. The lies and the hype built up around Rangers players is predictable if not staggering when you consider who has beaten them this season and who has taken points from them thus far. They are not a good side, they have a system that works but minus key players that system starts to break down and they are shown up for what they are – a defensive side who rely on set pieces and break away goals and long balls when that doesn’t work.

They beat a Celtic side with 10 men who came off the back of a midweek match against tonight’s opponents and who lost their Captain halfway through the game when he was playing well. That is the only time they’ve played well this season apart from when the haircut that time forgot’s Motherwell team lay down as per usual to them. Every other match has been a struggle (other than Dunfermline away who are simply garbage).

Beram, don’t give the media monkey’s the opportunity to write this tripe is all I would say son, confidence is not a bad thing and we certainly DO play the best football in the SPL when we are on form.

Make sure we win on Sunday and do our best tonight.

  11. Its strike day and I will be joining my fellow public sector workers rally in Glasgow at noon

If Philvis is around later I would like him to know that my tin plated pension that I worked hard for looking after people and on occasion saving their lives is a contract that this government wants to rip up because they say Im going to live longer and its not fair on the taxpayer

Well Philvis whats not fair on the taxpayer is the tens of billlions used to bail out the bankers who have pension contracts this government said cannot be ripped up

There is no doubt this is now an ideological fight with this government whose aim is to take away the rights of workers and make them pay for the mess that corruption in the political and financial systems has left us in

All we want is fairness not a race to the bottom

    Hail hail

  12. If the league positions and situations were somehow reversed and Kyle Lafferty for example, had said Ragers were better than Celtic, I don’t think the reporting or coverage would have been the same – do you?

I think Beram’s freedom of speech and stated opinion made story of the day in the press set up, – how come we’ve suddenly heard Beram Kayal and he’s been here for two years?

You wouldn’t think the BBC would rush down to Ibrokes the minute after Celtic cut a gap of 12 points to 4, and ask the first two bears they meet whether Ragers will win the league, – but they did.

Celtic fans shouldn’t react to a reaction, the press are doing much more than bending Beram’s words.

    Lazy journalism

    Get UP the workers !!!!!!

  15. Kyle Lafferty has a bad back? Is it related to they yellow streak running through it? Or the shock in his body every time he throws himself to the ground?

I’m convinced that the wee rat’s repeated knee problems are in part due to his diving tendencies.

I have worked it out that I will get an extra 52p per day. Then I realised I forgot about the tax and nics!! If it’s a payrise of 40p a day I’ll be lucky!!

But sure this slimy government can afford to spend billions bombing the life outta Libya while at the same time destroy my pensions and pay!

The players have to wise up and stop giving the media the chance to make stuff up.

    It really is that simple.

BTW are we selling tickets for the game against the huns directly to the hun fans as well as Hearts? If not why not? As surely they are just as big a problem to get money off as well.

I believe that is now 3 games in a row for the Poundland team without a win but looking at the papers you wouldnt know it where are the cracked crests and is Alistair up to it comments that would fill the newspapers if it were Celtic? They are suppossed to publish there annual financial results today but dont bet your mortgage on it happening everything at poundland at the minute is smoke and mirrors.H.H.

He did the necessary and then waved his newspaper and said —– ” I see my English brothers are striking today — Good ! Good on them -Fancy a coffee ? ”

We went for a coffee He announced he had to go —– ” Back to work ? ” asked I —-” Yes —- but I have to go to the supermarket first ”

  22. A guy was interviewed on the picket line this morning on the bbc and blew away the governments arguement.

    He said

The Government is telling everybody that they need to put more into their private pension as the state pension will not be enough to live on in the near future, but they are telling us we need to put more in, but get less back! Is that not a bit stupid?
