Celtic-Atletico programme as 40,000 hearts beat as one

639

Our  unofficial Celtic v Atletico Madrid match programme is now available.  We preview tomorrow’s match as well as the other game in our group between Rennes and Udinese, as well as a look back 37 years to that infamous game against Atletico in the European Cup semi-final.

European nights have always been special in my Celtic supporting time.  When I was a boy they would fill Celtic Park whereas it was predominantly empty on domestic duty.  The modern era brought great Uefa Cup and Champions league moments but for a while, even at the peak of our Champions League prowess, the stadium lost something to corporate interests.  I remember watching fans walk out of the stadium with 10 minutes on the clock when we were drawing 0-0 with Milan!

Tomorrow night will be more like the great days I remember, when every soul inside the ground was plugged into the nervous anticipation that pumps through all our veins.

Atletico Madrid occupies a similar place in our history to Rapid Vienna.  If you were around during the 70s and 80s, when these two clubs eliminated Celtic on their way to European finals, by violence and dishonesty respectively, games against these clubs will have an added dimension.  Two years ago we finished above a decent Rapid team in the Europa League group stage who had already dumped Martin O’Neill’s Aston Villa.  When Scott McDonald’s goal went in I raised my arms and inadvertently punched the safety ladder at the back of the North Stand, the cut knuckles and bruising lasted weeks.  It was a stupid incident but captures the, 40-odd-thousand-people-one-heartbeat, phenomenon that we get to experience too seldom in our lives.

I’m going to look out the hoops tonight, been ages since I’ve worn them.  Bring on Atletico, Falcao ‘n’ all.

Hate the ra clubs and although their name doesn’t start Ra there is no doubt Atletico belong in the infamous list of foes. It seems we have been waiting a life time for this one.

Paul67 says 40,000 plus I thought we would get over 50,000 for this one but the weather and KO time might be against this.

Hopefully all the tim strikers will make it along tomorrow to swell the crowd.

Atletico may well be the best team we face all season but I’m sure a win against them would be cherished as much as our wins over Valencia and indeed Barcelona.

A tall order for our young Celts but the crowd might just be the difference.

They kicked the Class of ’73 off the park and I’m sure the present team have been told the story of that tie. Would it be to our advantage if they deploy the same tactic in 2011 ?

All the huns I’ve asked in the last few days, now know who canamalar is, and to a man they admit, my question willl seperate the wheat from the chalf.

Getting addicted to CQN in the last year has added to my addiction list but the fixed odds coupon has nearly 40 years on the radar.

Notwithstanding all those “incentives” to move that you would employ, the guy holding the contract decides whether he goes, or stays.

It becomes a stand-off. One that the club couldn’t afford. It’s business, you see.

Nope, in reality, the player and his agent hold all the aces.

Everything you suggest does not triumph the contract.

We tried it with Bobo, no matter what stage his career was at, and he may still be playing, somewhere in France.

  8. TET

Nothing serious – I tend to go for handicap multiples (any 4 or 5 and an accum) @10p with the favourites at minus 2/3/4 goals. Never more than a £5 bet.

If I am winning – have been known to stick the £5 or £10 on a live 4/1-6/1 bet at the death looking for a last minute win or draw.

Best one this season was Celtic (when down 3-0 at Killie) got 16/5 the draw.

Would have been nice for the team and me had we got all 3 points – had us at 80/1!

The day I started taking the gambling seriously was the day the huns cost me 32+k, I did one of them any 3 from each section things, the hun got beat by Kilmarnock at home the were 2/9.

I have never done one of them bets to this day.

99% of my bets are singles, and I will spend time on who is missing etc.etc. it’s time consuming, but it’s stood me in good stead for many a year, but as ever football is a funny old game, and sometimes things go pear shaped.

There was a site on the go that sadly has gone, it was called Jinky’s Oars, and yer man on there gave his bets every week, and he had a plan and stuck to it, he did make money, he also only wagered single bets, if you want to make any money from football betting, this is the only answer.

I said that I would dig out a few things that I have done over the years, perms some cost very little and the rewards are high, but as ever you need results to go your way, not an easy task when you consider that 3 teams can produce 27 different results.

If you want I can mail them to you, but I will need a day or two as I have to find them and I don’t know where they are, but find them I will.

  16. angelgabriel, THE EXILED TIM

re betting on football, I got burned too often with the section bets so tend to go for perms/yankee-type bets.

More recently, as I watch less and pay less attention to football, I look for singles against the odds (Kilmarnock at home v Rangers, 7.2 on betfair [6/1 in old money]), but you have to have a feel for the teams. Over the years, I have found that this works best

    – at the start of the season (bet on recently promoted teams)

    – at the end of the season (bet on endangered teams against mid-table teams, especially away from home)

    – teams who have just lost/employed a new manager

I know that the traditional bookies price these factors in, but I almost always use betfair, where the bookies influence is limited (theoretically zero) because you are betting against the crowd (which follows the bookies who follow the crowd…hence the theoretical zero).

I followed Jinkysoars single-bet system for a season but ended up down; however, I did save a copy of it on MS Word. If someone can tell me how to post a Word doc online (is it th same as sharing Excel worksheets via Google?) I’m happy to do that.

  17. Re the speculation on Duffield’s (Tax payer subsidised?) trip.

    It’s obvious he’s gone for a Brazilian.

My enduring memory of the Athletico game is of wee Jimmy getting hacked to the ground repeatedly and rolling around. The Spaniards(?) were queing up to kick him every time he got the ball.

The referee was completely hapless. Stronger refereeing would have seen them reduced to about 5 men.

The only surprise of the night was that there was no break in from the Jungle.

Instead the bust up happened as the players left the park when a Celtic player seemed to be knocked to the track.

We couldn’t see much from the Jungle but it looked like a few Celtic players were involved.

  19. Few questions before i get the napper down;

    1) Did the huns goal against (bah) Hamburg count double as it was away from home?

    2) If so,will they and the LL report a draw?

    3) Why has McGrogger still not been charged for the karate kick clearance he made away to Malmo?

    and

    4) What does a team have to possess to be labelled “cracks” or “crack outfit?”

    Answers to Qs 3 & 4 most welcome. ;-)

I think the huns giving Jeje Lalpekhlua and Sunil Chhetri trials was just a cynical bid to curry favour in the big south Indian market. Personally I dont think it matars much.
