Celtic get what their inconsistency deserved

827

Was anyone surprised at yesterday’s result?  You shouldn’t have been.  I don’t think I’ve ever before written two articles against taking a result for granted.  Celtic are ridiculously inconsistent as Kilmarnock, Hibs, St Johnstone, Inverness and now St Mirren will testify, even Arbroath left Celtic Park with a draw.  The intensity which has been self-evident on Champions League duty has been posted missing far too often.

Defeat yesterday was entirely possible as is defeat away to Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.  There will be entirely different tactics and attitude when Juventus call next month but right now you’re feeling sore because, against all odds, we’ve conceded a League Cup final place and we’ll find an equally brave opponent at some point in the Scottish Cup unless a solution is found.

Speaking at the funeral of Sean Fallon last week, Sir Alex Ferguson referred to need for a manager to be a hard taskmaster, generating a corresponding need for the assistant manager to be plugged into the dressing room.  I’m sure this is not the only way of managing a football team but it was how Jock Stein and Sean worked, and it’s how Sir Alex has worked for the last three decades.

Millionaire players need an edge in their lives to deliver on a lesser stage.

I had to be in Paisley all morning, which did not help my mood.

I suspect that If yesterday’s game had been beamed worldwide we’d have seen a whole different approach from everyone concerned, and that includes the coaching staff.

I think Crerand and Murdoch played together a few times.

*Absolutely in Bobby’s debut against Hearts is at least one I can recall, Bobby was inside right that sunny day.

    Auldheid,

Heard anything about the FTTT appeal, has Thommo enquired ?

  4. Pat Crerand was playing when I seen my first Celtic game, Nov 1962 0-1 to Q of S who had George Farm from the Matthews cup final in goal.

I seem to recall that I heard the announcement that he was leaving on the lunch time news (same time as the one o clock gang) but could be wrong. I too was heart broken.

Murdoch was some replacement. There is a quote in Hugh Taylor’s annual in1969 from Cesare Maldini stating that Bobby Murdoch was about the best midfielder in Europe. Not enough to get him a load of Scotland caps though.

He did make the GB team v Wales for the Wales FA centenary celebrations and not long after scored a volley from about the halfway line v Clyde. I missed it. I was trying to work out how they put in the water storage tank above the Jungle or something.

He was one of my heroes.

I lived across the road from Jackie Mcgrory for years , ran about with his young cousin who lived across the landing from him , funny that how the tims always ended up in the top flats in Renfrew .

  6. Time for the fight scenes in The Quiet Man, E4.

Not to my knowledge but saw a post on tsfm saying the right to appeal which has not yet been granted is rarely refused and time frame will not be years.

I take the guy posting knows the territory.

    ohits

That really is before my time, but you might have known some of my family then …. McQuade’s and Gallagher’s.

Right – how long will it take McIntyre to say “but the fans are saying they won’t go back if this goes through” rage, fume………

  10. Peter Scarff,

They both played together quite a number of times. It took Mr Stein’s return to change Bobby from an inside right to right half. By that time, Paddy was long gone.

Bobby Murdoch is the best player I have seen in a Celtic jersey, bar none. His passing and shooting, never mind his tackling, were a delight to behold. And for most of his Celtic career, he played with an injury (to his ankle, I think).

    Auldheid,

Read in a few places the time limit was 56 days, that’s well past now, wondering why we haven’t heard anything, that’s all, usually there are a few interweb hounds have sniffed out stuff like this very quickly.

    sometime today

Whether the player who takes the penalty kick skies it over the bar / near hits the corner flag with his kick or the goalkeeper guesses the correct way and fortune favour him it is no excuse for a professional footballer or even an amateur to miss from 12 yards with a gaping goal in front of you.

    No excuse.

Charlie Tully scored direct from a corner. Twice! after the first kick was deemed unacceptable by a mason.

Gary Caldwell picking his best 11 of players he has played with. Wonder if he’ll include himself?

Lenny needs to buy captain or reassign the duty to someone within the team who can do the job.

Spot on my friend. Our midfield is made up of all the same types. What we need, apart from Lubo of course, is his type of foot on the ball, looking for options. I say Crosas had all that, so did Paul (wonder bhoy) McStay. Paul is too old now sadly but Crosas is not and he’s a died in the wool CELTIC man.So I say, Neilly bhoy, go get him back, NOW!!

Ps I blame KOJO for yesterday.

    Hail Hail

  16. Was introduced to Bobby Murdoch in The Vogue one night,a more humble man you could not meet .A True Celt.

  17. KINGLUBO,

The lhad Crosas is the last midfield player we have had who fits the description of the type of player we badly need. I too would be delighted if he were to return.

  18. When Charlie stepped up to take the pen i noticed their keeper walking right up to the ball… Ref had a wee check to ensure the ball was on the spot… Then keeper strolls back before jumping along the line..

All within the rules .. Unless your Fraser forster

Did Frank Beattie not have a wee shop in Cambusbarron, as well as manage the local amateur side who won the Scottish Amateur Cup when he was in charge?

    HH!!

  20. I am pretty sure that in Paddy Crerand’s last game against them he was actually physically sick at one point. Now rumour was Paddy had had been on the New Year razzle which infuriated Sean Fallon. After that he was off to Old Trafford. Whatever the truth it was terribly sad to see such a fine player move against his wishes.

  21. Bobby Murdoch played in the EC final in Lisbon with a dodgy ankle.

The 3 best passers of a ball I have seen in the hoops – Bobby Murdoch, Charlie Gallagher and George Connelly.

    Bar none!

    HH!!

  22. Bob Kelly was a big Murdoch fan .BJ told Kelly he was not an inside right but a right half – Kelly disagreed- BJ told Kelly we’ll see on Saturday (SCQF v Killie). We won 3-2. Killie won the championship tha

  23. Just phoned the docs there as a bit under the weather.

” for information on the dangers of marijuana, please press hash ”

    Coat and oot :))

  24. Pat Crerand’s last match for Celtic was the aforementioned 0-4 game at Mordor on new year’s day 1963.

He joined Man Ure on 3rd February for £56,000.

    That’s £25 million in today’s money!

    HH!!

  25. Swansea player Danny Graham has asked for a transfer for ‘ personal reasons ‘ …. Rate the guy highly, anyone think he could be onNFL radar and could we afford him ?

  26. Tallybhoy – 18:43 on 28 January, 2013

PL needs to answer why that £25 million (in today’s money) has not been invested in the team.

    Sack the board!

  27. I see Cultsbhoy is having his usual rant at Scott Brown. If we had 11 players with the desire, drive and intensity of Scott we would do fine. He was the only one I would have given pass marks to yesterday…the rest as they say in Fife were bowff.
