Celtic get what their inconsistency deserved

827

Was anyone surprised at yesterday’s result?  You shouldn’t have been.  I don’t think I’ve ever before written two articles against taking a result for granted.  Celtic are ridiculously inconsistent as Kilmarnock, Hibs, St Johnstone, Inverness and now St Mirren will testify, even Arbroath left Celtic Park with a draw.  The intensity which has been self-evident on Champions League duty has been posted missing far too often.

Defeat yesterday was entirely possible as is defeat away to Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.  There will be entirely different tactics and attitude when Juventus call next month but right now you’re feeling sore because, against all odds, we’ve conceded a League Cup final place and we’ll find an equally brave opponent at some point in the Scottish Cup unless a solution is found.

Speaking at the funeral of Sean Fallon last week, Sir Alex Ferguson referred to need for a manager to be a hard taskmaster, generating a corresponding need for the assistant manager to be plugged into the dressing room.  I’m sure this is not the only way of managing a football team but it was how Jock Stein and Sean worked, and it’s how Sir Alex has worked for the last three decades.

Millionaire players need an edge in their lives to deliver on a lesser stage.

I had to be in Paisley all morning, which did not help my mood.

  7. Questions to Lenny:

When will you take responsibility for the series of failures at hampden?

If we don’t win the double this year will you step aside and allow someone else to take the club forward?

Ps. The league does not count when our budget is greater than all the other SPL clubs put together.

the bench yesterday was a s strong as i can remember.Any one of them could consider himself a first team regular.

Yesterday was about complacency and a realisation that these guys are not as good as they think they are.

    Ps why so serious?

  11. Can anybody explain why the 2 players got booked for handling the ball yesterday?

They were both of the ‘I’ve seen them given’ variety but why anybody would think the player did it to gain an advantage is beyond me.

I remember in my playing days a couple of penalties being given against me in similar situations.

I only protested mildly as though I knew I hadn’t meant to, I would have shouted for one had it been the other team.

Alan Hutton on loan to Real Mallorca is untrue. He’s actually off to Magaluf to work as an 18-30 rep.

  13. League Cup commenced in 1945.

Celtic’s first win was in 1956, after a replay.

    Retained it in.1957.

Never won it again till the Lions era.

Then we were in something like 14 consecutive finals and won about 7.

It always seemed to be an also ran competition for us, when we were going well, but when we were also rans, we were damn glad to get our hands on it.

I think it was O’Neill’s first trophy.

  19. Some people seem to be suggesting that Neil is too pally with his assistants Johann and Gary, and that this is one of the reasons why the team have often underperformed this season – perhaps.

Big Jock also surrounded himself with people he knew and trusted and had played with – Sean Fallon, Neil Mochan, Willie Fernie…

    Seemed to work well.

I asked the same question. I think that ballon thinks any infringement in the box warrants a card.

  21. There is nothing to match raw hunger in any sports, I have followed a variety of sports over the last 60 years and have often witnessed a star team being ripped to shreds by a workmanlike team who simply wanted it more. Its O.K. to say we should want it as much as St. Mirren but the reality is we didn’t and if we meet again next year we wont either. St. Mirren Supporters will remember & celebrate that win for the rest of their lives, if we had won, we would have forgotten about it in a few days. We will remember & celebrate the Barca win for the rest of our lives, had they beaten us they would forget about it in a few days. You can’t match the hunger of a motivated underdog, however you do need to be able to combat it and overcome it. I think perhaps that whilst Lenny paid lip service to the anticipated hunger of St. Mirren, he still selected and set up his team as if it was a routine SPL game. Both Lenny & the team deserve criticism for yesterdays performance but it should be balanced. e.g. Charlie had a mare but Charlie has been brilliant for us in game after game and is a totally committed player, to generalise and call players gutless & wasters is disgraceful. They were bad yesterday, and yes in the one off key domestic games they have choked and that is a worry. Unfortunately when a curse like that strikes it becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. The Scottish Cup has suddenly become huge, its now almost a must win Competition for Celtic.

  22. Hi Bhoys and Ghirls havent posted for a while but the lucky cody post made me want to reply

If we don’t win the double this year will you step aside and allow someone else to take the club forward?

Ps. The league does not count when our budget is greater than all the other SPL clubs put together.

NFL interview after match although contained many excuses we have heard before did say he accepted responsibility

we should win the double but if by some fluke we dont I for one believe NFL walking will not take the club further as he has real affinity with our club and the only way to get more from a manager for a club is in wages offered CELTIC dont have the finances to attract a new manager of the calibre to achieve this

and lastly money does not secure titles you only have to look at the money neong thrown around in England to see this

this is just my opinion and not picking on lucky cody it was just this one of many posts that annoyed me

might possibly have something to do with being at the game and not getting home until 4.00 am because our coach was involved in a horrendous suicide on A77

  23. Why do sevco / Huns always try to label CFC fans as bigots

A ridiculous proposition we don’t like the sectarian bigots so we must be bigots

Perhaps bigotry has a different meaning to them …something similar to their misuse of the word dignity

  24. The 1957 Scottish League Cup Final was a football match played on 19 October 1957 at Hampden Park, in which Celtic beat rivals Rangers in a world record 7–1 victory.

  25. The Comfortable Collective on

One thing that really pisses me off is the oft repeated crap that rangers will be punished by having titles removed once their financial doping and cheating is determined by nimmo smith. The removal of titles is an automatic result of cheating, the punishment is still to be decided.

When Canadian sprinter Ben Johnston was caught cheating at the 1988 Olympics, his title was immediately removed from him and awarded to who came second.

    That was not his punishment.

His punishment for cheating was to be banned from all competitions for two years, and for him to be stripped of ALL his other titles and medals (whether he won them fairly or not).

    Auldheid,

Brings me to my oldest gripe, some magers have favs who will play if available regardless of competition, in fact to get a fav into a team, regulars in other positions have been dropped and systems changed.

By Big Time Charlies do you mean players who thought they were above the competition?

If so they did not compete as they would have had they given the opposition competitive respect.

Professional players become professional by being competitive allied with skill and physique.

St Mirren players on the day matched us on the ladt too and won hands down on being competitive. I agree application was lacking but one of the things that makes a person apply themselves is fear of the consequences if they do not.

I think that is the key point regarding motivation there has to be consequences where it is absent. Too many rewards for when it is present that make consequences of its absence less than uncomfortable.

Players contracts too slanted to a players benefit where failure rewarded as well as success.
