Celtic get what their inconsistency deserved

827

Was anyone surprised at yesterday’s result?  You shouldn’t have been.  I don’t think I’ve ever before written two articles against taking a result for granted.  Celtic are ridiculously inconsistent as Kilmarnock, Hibs, St Johnstone, Inverness and now St Mirren will testify, even Arbroath left Celtic Park with a draw.  The intensity which has been self-evident on Champions League duty has been posted missing far too often.

Defeat yesterday was entirely possible as is defeat away to Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.  There will be entirely different tactics and attitude when Juventus call next month but right now you’re feeling sore because, against all odds, we’ve conceded a League Cup final place and we’ll find an equally brave opponent at some point in the Scottish Cup unless a solution is found.

Speaking at the funeral of Sean Fallon last week, Sir Alex Ferguson referred to need for a manager to be a hard taskmaster, generating a corresponding need for the assistant manager to be plugged into the dressing room.  I’m sure this is not the only way of managing a football team but it was how Jock Stein and Sean worked, and it’s how Sir Alex has worked for the last three decades.

Millionaire players need an edge in their lives to deliver on a lesser stage.

I had to be in Paisley all morning, which did not help my mood.

It meant more to St Mirren players yesterday ….the same way that it meant more to Killie ,Ross Co,Hearts players

It’s happening too often and the extremely poor performances are being replicated with alarming regularity ….three dross performances in a row

  2. Longest unbeaten run (all): Celtic currently hold the UK record for an unbeaten run in professional football : 62 games (49 won, 13 drawn), from 13 Nov 1915 until 21 April 1917- a total of 17 months and four days in all (they lost at home to Kilmarnock on the last day of the season).

Longest unbeaten run (home): Celtic also hold the SPL record for an unbeaten run of home matches (77), spanning from 2001 to 2004 (this run was ended by a 3-2 defeat to Aberdeen on 21 April 2004), and the record for the longest run of consecutive wins in a single season (25 matches).

    HH!!

  3. Prestonpans boy – I agree about the ref and the handballs.

At least either defender was not on a yellow before the penalty – it would have ruined the game.

BTW, scoring a penalty in an amateur game against a 6ft goalie is nothing compared to one who’s 6 ft 5, arms and hands adding more width and who does yoga/pilates etc for extra agility and suppleness.

I’ve long thought that the penalty spot should be moved nearer the goal – say a metre.

Added to that, penalties are too often awarded when there’s a minimal goal threat like Mulgrew yesterday.

There are key positions a manager wants to fill and if he has guys who do the job regularly they get cut more slack than those who do not rise to the challenge. Then there are guys who need a run to become regulars.

It would be intereting to see the teams that turn out each week to see who gets selected after more than say 2 poor performances in a row.

When you then take injuries into account as a reason for a change then apart from Fraser Foster, Hooper and Wanyama Im not sure there are undroppable favourites. Wanyama had a mare yesterday but over the piece he was first pick on sheet.

  5. Record attendance (Scotland): 146,433; The Scottish Cup final win against Aberdeen FC in 1937 was attended by a crowd of 146,433 (unofficial attendance 147,365) at Hampden Park in Glasgow, which remains a record for a club match in European football.

Your certainly not alone in your thoughts.

The lack of any forward movement from the central midfield area be it pass or run makes us a very easy team to defend.

I see a strategy built on caution and it’s only the fact that we have superior players to other spl teams that get is goals.

Have stated on here often that we often win games from individual moments of brilliance rather than a positive strategy.

Often said that signing a creatve midfielder would not make much of a difference unless a less cautious coaching approach was adopted.

A lot of fans feel yesterday was just an off day but i feel it was another example of Neil’s consistency.

It was a ridiculous performance involving the loss of the most stupid goals

If y memory serves me well…Marshall in attempting to clear the ball kicked it off an Aberdeen player and it went in

  13. Celtic Mac, too true.

thomthethim, Jock Stein reached the League Cup final every season he was Celtic manager, 13 out of our 14 consecutive finals. We won only six.

Two League Cup wins in particular were memorable for me:

The 2-1 win over Rangers at a rain-soaked Hampden in 1982. We were miles ahead of them and 2-0 up at half time. Jim Bett pulled a goal back early in the second half and although we retained the upper hand there was no more scoring. This was the game Gordon Smith was brought back by John Greig, to no avail. Hampden wasted my shoes that day, a memento of old Hampden).

We never won the tournament again until 1997 when Wim Jansen’s team won it. This 3-0 win over Dundee United was a hugely significant trophy as it was the first time we won a trophy while being a genuine title contender for a decade. It felt like the long winter was coming to an end.

Two great memories which compare favourably to the 2000 win over Aberdeen. Kenny Dalglish was in charge after John Barnes sacking. We left Hampden with little to cheer, despite the trophy.

Remember that game really well was actually 2-1 to Aberdeen. What has stuck in my memory was some clowns venting their frustration at the last ditch defeat and decrying MON. Seriously you couldn’t make it up.

When you say in a row you are speaking geographically?

    Ross County was when again?

If you mean occasion I think the first has to be ruled out and after both Killie and Hearts games we had referee decisions that turned the result.

Yesterday was another matter and we did not compete or apply ourselves but I would not bring up the other two games as indicative of the problem of this season which is only competing when support and players think there is real competition.

Im not offering excuses Im saying motivation does not come from what we are told but the consequences if we ignore the advice.

We strung a fantastic unbeaten run together in the league last season – not sure we can better or even equal it this season.

  19. In 1997 we won the League Cup at Ibrox.

I recall Marc Reiper being one of the scorers that day. Thought he was a good signing.

  20. prestonpans bhoys on

Talking about stats…..this season, in competitive games, we have lost 7 and I’ve been to 6 :-(

Might be an idea to ban me for the rest of the season……………..

  21. EDB

Reiper was an excellent player …we could do with a player who possesses his presence and positional sense

  22. Yes, Paul thems were 2 very memorable games, the rain at Hampden was much like the weather tonight, but what a doing we gave them, the 1997 win at Ibrox was Morten Wieghort’s finest hour. The previous weekend we hammered Utd 4-0 and Andy Thom ran the show, the following week they were too busy watching him but Morten was outstanding.

  23. BIG-CUP-WINNERS

The Aberdeen game which brought the unbeaten run to an end did finish 2-3 -Big John Hartson scored both goals if I remember.
