Celtic get what their inconsistency deserved

827

Was anyone surprised at yesterday’s result?  You shouldn’t have been.  I don’t think I’ve ever before written two articles against taking a result for granted.  Celtic are ridiculously inconsistent as Kilmarnock, Hibs, St Johnstone, Inverness and now St Mirren will testify, even Arbroath left Celtic Park with a draw.  The intensity which has been self-evident on Champions League duty has been posted missing far too often.

Defeat yesterday was entirely possible as is defeat away to Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.  There will be entirely different tactics and attitude when Juventus call next month but right now you’re feeling sore because, against all odds, we’ve conceded a League Cup final place and we’ll find an equally brave opponent at some point in the Scottish Cup unless a solution is found.

Speaking at the funeral of Sean Fallon last week, Sir Alex Ferguson referred to need for a manager to be a hard taskmaster, generating a corresponding need for the assistant manager to be plugged into the dressing room.  I’m sure this is not the only way of managing a football team but it was how Jock Stein and Sean worked, and it’s how Sir Alex has worked for the last three decades.

Millionaire players need an edge in their lives to deliver on a lesser stage.

I had to be in Paisley all morning, which did not help my mood.

  1. First game I really remember, league cup final 1976 v Aberdeen. Was on my da’ s shoulders next to a guy who had a steaming hot bovril. Me Da says we’re gonny move over the terrace a bit coz The hoops are gonny score the now. Sure as damn , we just move and King Kenny scores , guys bovril everywhere!

Lost 2-1 with Davie Robb scoring the winner in extra time.

    Ally MacLeod Aberdeen manager.

We won the double that year in what was KKs last year and the Big mhans second last.

Just realised, that was 37 years ago this year!!!

    Still remember that bovril but!

Well I have a wee bit to go to beat my all time record of 12 defeats in one season – 1978-79 and that included getting beat by them in league cup. Think I’ve only seen us win that cup 3 times!

  3. Paul,

    Thanks for the response.

My figures were a bit out. Going from memory, but the premise is true.

Like the Hawthorn, the LC was welcomed when all other fruit failed.

The 1965 final was memorable for me, because I wasn’t there!

I was best man at my cousin’s wedding in Toryglen, with the reception in a small hotel at Queen’s Park. So near…….

  4. Paul 67.

I mind the 2-1 game for other reasons.

Me and a couple of my mates didn’t have tickets, after being unsuccessful on acquiring tickets,we noticed a jcb conveniently parked next to the wall.

Thinking we would be smart we climbed up the jcb,as my chest

landed on the top of the wall only

then did i realised they had greased it.

    White jacket and top ruined.

    Got in though.

    Those were the days.

One League Cup Final I remember fondly was the 1974/75 one when we beat Hibs 6-3 and Dixie became the first and still only player to score hat-tricks in both a Scottish Cup and League Cup Final.

Seven days previously we had beaten Hibs 5-0 at CP in the league – Dixie scored 3 that day as well!

    HH!!

  6. goldstar10, that League Cup final at Ibrox was one of my favourite Celtic memories.

  8. 1982 final.

Absolutely belted down all day, we were miles ahead of Deidco and the 2-1 result didn’t reflect our superiority.

Remember them signing Gordon Smith on loan!!!! In the lead up to the final in an act of sheer desperation.

Had a tri-colour skip cap on that day, thought I was the bees-knees!!!

  9. My first Cup Final at Hampden was the 72 Scottish Cup, 6-1 v a very good Hibs team, Dixie hat trick. Been down hill since!!

  10. Tim Malone Will Tell on

I grew up in Ibrox and can recall that in the 60’s early 70’s, Deidco’s floodlights were a row of 60 watt bulbs papped along the front of the main stand – like watching a game in the dark.

  11. Paul67

That 2-1 game ,some bhoy asked me an my mate to swap our tickets in terracing

for 2 in main stand, felt a wee bit guilty watchin the rain pee doon.

You are correct first half we tore them apart ,Provan having a brilliant game against thems.

  12. Chuckles statement a bit subdued by his standards.

He obviously realizes he has a busted flush in respect of Sevco. Time for him to pocket his winnings and run…

The 82 League Cup final was also the season of the tight shorts, would still bring a tear to a glass eye.

    Auldheid,

We’ve both seen players having a great run in a winning team, being replaced as soon as a fav is back near fit, fair enough there are some players that we make undroppable, I think managers should be different.

I’m thinking Lenny is too friendly

For most of the game we had four wingers and hooper dropping back to help the midfield

    :oD))))

Plenty of good crosses in and no one there

The players looked lethargic no lazy, I saw a lot of effort for little reward, frustration and bad luck got the better of them, concentration lapses, possibly listening out for the songs and support then wondering if they had burst an eardrum:o) Bet you theyd rather the couple of thousand who attend the Ross County away games had been allowed to sit together.

St Mirren played a stormer, yep we made mistakes and St Mirren capitalised that’s all they need to do, they never made many mistakes.

    Ground conditions were definitely underfoot.

I expect about 4 or 5 aff kili.

  15. SOAL

Ah memories, even at an early age remember thinking , how come they covered the Hun end when we were left open to the elements?

Wasn’t long before I realised how the SFA operated and they’re still at it !

    Thanks for posting the link.

Big shout regards Mark Rieper though no arguement from me.

Top centre half. Was it a toe injury that brought his career to

    a premature end ?

  19. As cup finals go the best, for me, has to be the 1969 Scottish Cup Final – it was my first one and I was 15. Wanted to go in ’65 and’67 but my mother said no! Dad said – “We’re goin!”

    4-0 going on 7 or 8.

Still see George Connelly, who was 20 at the time, dispossesing ‘the greatest ever ranker’ and rounding the goalie Niven(?) to poke the ball in the net.

Had never seen so many people in one place – attendance was over 130,000.

If I played for Celtic every time I pulled on the Hoops I wd be 10 feet tall my chest wd expand at least 6 inches and be unbeatable. I didnt see much of that yesterday!!

  21. Anyone who is keen on writing could do a lot worse than tune into BBC Radio 4 at 9.30 for an excellent discussion, very well chaired by Allan Little, on what George Orwell had to say on the subject.

    A great listen.

Niven was long gone by then. Was it not some gormless clown called Stuart somebody? He was that good cannae mind his surname? Kennedy maybe?

I cannot remember offhand if Jock Stein’s Celtic team ever actually lost a domestic Cup

Semi-Final, though there are some on here who might put me right on that point.

  25. By the way, if it was just about the quality of the goal and nothing to do with the context in which it came, Charlie Mul’s last minute effort in yesterday’s painful episode deserves to win goal of the season.
