CELTIC KID IN LIMBO

ADAM MONTGOMERY is in soccer limbo as he prepares to prove to Brendan Rodgers he can provide the answer to a Celtic problem position.

However, there is NO chance of the versatile 21-year-old defender getting an opportunity before the end of the season.

Montgomery returned to Parkhead in February after suffering a setback just weeks into his short-term loan move to Motherwell.

The left-back was recalled by the champions for rehabilitation following a freak injury during training with the Fir Parkers.

He played one game for Stuart Kettlewell’s club – a 3-1 Scottish Cup win over Alloa – before his enforced return to his parent club. Montgomery is now fighting for fitness, but Brendan Rodgers will not be allowed to even include his player in a matchday squad as emergency cover for Greg Taylor.

The youngster, who is under contract until the summer of next year, had a six-month temporary transfer at Fleetwood Town at the start of the campaign.

FIFA rules state no player can turn out for three clubs in the same season and Montgomery remains registered at Motherwell until the end of May.

The adaptable ace made six appearances for the English third-tier outfit after former Hoops captain Scott Brown signed him on a year-long deal in June. However, the Parkhead legend was sacked in September and Montgomery made only six appearances for the club.

The contract was scrapped and Montgomery was taken back to Celtic at the turn of the year.

The January switch to Fir Park was designed to get the defender some valuable game time, but bad luck scuppered that opportunity.

Montgomery has also had loan spells at Aberdeen and St Johnstone after being handed his Hoops debut by caretaker boss John Kennedy in a 4-0 win over St Johnstone in May 2021.

Rodgers will be in the market for a new No.3 in the summer after Alexandro Bernabei’s nine-month switch to Brazilian outfit SC Internacional earlier this month.

Montgomery is hoping for a change in fortune as he aims to prove he could be the man for the Hoops gaffer.
