Celtic Let Glasgow Flourish

266

If you are 30-years-old or above, chances are you have been going to Celtic Park since a time when the stadium itself and the area around Parkhead was derelict and economically challenged.  The Parkhead Forge and Barr’s factories, large local employers in their day, were long gone.

In the early 1970s, the government attempted to regenerate inner-city areas across the country, with the Glasgow Eastern Area Renewal (GEAR) project first to launch, followed by Docklands projects in London and Liverpool.  GEAR ran for almost 20 years, but when it shuttered in 1987, the east if the city was still hopelessly impoverished.  That’s not to say it would not have been worse still, were it not for the limited impact of GEAR.

What the area lacked was an anchor project but one arrived seven years after GEAR when the foundations were laid for the new Celtic Park.

The regeneration of Celtic brought improved management to all aspects of the club and associated business, while visitor numbers increased.  A seven-day-per-week retail operation was the first step in bringing people to the area out with match days, as Celtic continued to acquire adjacent land and make improvements to the stadium environment.

This anchor sporting facility soon drew the Commonwealth Arena and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, build directly opposite Celtic Park.  Glasgow had a sporting quarter, drawing athletes and well as spectators from across the globe.

Progress has not stopped.  Celtic have outline permission for a hotel to be built onsite, with a museum to follow and continually petition for a fan zone, where the tens of thousands who arrive on match day will be able to buy refreshments and access toilet facilities.

Strathclyde University’s Fraser of Allander Institute’s report on the economic impact of Celtic, published yesterday, outlines the enormous importance of the club to the economic success of the city and beyond:

Equivalent of 2820 full time jobs created.

£165m contribution to Scottish GDP.

A net inflow to Glasgow of over 1 million people in one season.

Celtic are a successful Scottish exporter, 47% of revenues come from outside Scotland.

What is happening through Celtic in the east of the city is not the only story in Glasgow.  The SEC Centre, with the Exhibition Centre, Clyde Auditorium and SSE Hydro has turned the Finnieston area into a world-leading venue for conferences, exhibitions and concerts.  Glasgow is now a destination city.

Much of this happened organically.  The success of the SECC encouraged more development in the area, while Celtic have had several iterations of insightful planning since the mid-90s.  In different parts of the world, cities compete to bring economic icons like Celtic to their patch.  In Glasgow, the Council heard objections to the Celtic Superstore plans as it may compete with the local Tesco.  Public transportation infrastructure caters only for local resident volumes, with no plans to move into the 21st century, while Glasgow City Council are planning to drive visitors away by insisting the nearest they can park will be 1 mile from the stadium – displacing the parking problem and increasing the time cars will be left in the area as spectators walk to and from the stadium.

The report was issued ahead of Celtic’s AGM, which is currently underway.  It is an explainer for those in positions of power who carry an economic responsibility, but seem to have little grasp of how to Let Glasgow Flourish.  The subtext to why the club asked the Fraser of Allander Institute to undertake the report is one of frustration.  Things are going well for Celtic, for Parkhead and for Glasgow, but so much more could be done if others worked with the club.

Bottom line a fraud has been committed, would it not be up to the fraud squad to investigate.

Info during a court case confirmed that a fraud was committed, I don’t see how this can be dismissed, I believe that time barred limits don’t apply when fraud has taken place, happy to be corrected on this.

IMO the club have to be forced to take this to CAS, the sfa even told them to do so, so as you say, why are they not.

  2. TET- I think they like us flailing about, moaning about SMSM BS,as it’s a distraction for us and stops us getting into the real issues like R12

You are much more informed than I am about what has been going on …. so, I will defer to you on that.

It does concern me that, if you feel there is enough evidence to warrant a criminal proceeding (where the standard of proof required is much higher than in a civil case), why nothing has been done (including by our Board) on the civil side.

It is sad that it has come to the stage where one of the 4 of you feels like that is the only option….

    MIT,

You know more than you remember, there are meeting minutes that prove rangers accepted liability before they submitted their competition application therefore knew they were making fraudulent claims in their application.

I’m not the only one who feels like this but the strongest advocate of this action, it has always been on the cards but timing is everything, I believe there may be a devastating window that will blow any and all plans out the water regardless of who wants what.

  5. Phil’s latest is Unhappy requistioners spells trouble for Celtic board.

Maybe someone could put a link up.

It hints, to me any way, that he has been talking to Auldheid.

    Hail Hail

  6. So let me think ?

What do @CelticFC have to hide regarding resolution 12.

    HEADTHEBALL

Singing about the IRA is NOT sectarian, political aye, but not sectarian, yet nobody has the balls to correct them, even Pedro today didn’t.

    ———–

Its all abour perception. I am not surprised that this was raised , we have discussed it on here often enough.

  8. Sounds like a terrible AGM determined to keep their inaction on Res 12 out of the headlines.

And they have succeeded as the Press will uniformly go with the sectarian singing question as their lead.

I feel sorry for all the recquisitioners for the way they have been mistreated by the Celtic Board.

I hope, nevertheless, tat they have the appetite for continuing this worthwhile fight.

    Greenpinata,

Its not all about perception its all about the comprehension of the words/terminology used.

Only a complete idiot or someone trying to drive an agenda would get it wrong.

  10. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    SFTB,

On the contrary it sounds to me like one of the better AGM’s where the top table’s spin was challenged by Auldheid when they tried to claim everything was rosey in the garden regarding Res12.

  11. Greenpinata

Whatever agenda anyone has, whatever perception anyone has, singing about the IRA is NOT sectarian, it’s political, there is no debate here, it’s NOT sectarian.

  12. Greenapinita

For it to be raised at an AGM in an open forum, left an open goal for SMSM.

Besides the IRA chanting was secondary when the questioners original point was about a increase in sectarian singing examples given were specifically …………..Sad Orange B@@@@@@ Craig Levein and Sad Orange B@@@@@ Steven Gerrard

Which most Celtic fans would agree is less open to perception.

  13. Canamalar

Agreed it was good that the Board’s spin that the recquisitioners were “happy” with their response was challenged.

But I disagree that this challenge is getting any traction or coverage in the Press, who are concentrating on the Songbook question.

And whike the position is now clearer that the Board are not allied with us on this question, I am disappointed with their position and their honesty.

That is why I think it is a bad AGM- they – The Board- have let us down big time.

  14. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

or is singing sad orange bassa, accusing them of being sectarian, now we are in perception land eh

  15. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    SFTB,

Res12 is/was never going to be reported anyway, they have kept a lid on it since day one.

As for their allegiance, that’s become more clear over the years with every new hoop they’ve told us to jump through.

I wish this https://trademarks.ipo.gov.uk/ipo-tmcase/page/Results/1/UK0002181523A had been made available last week where the connotations could have been driven home by now, I suspect the AGM may have been more uncomfortable for the top table.

  16. How can anyone fund a club that has owners in charge who turn a blind eye to corruption?

Sorry it’s unforgivable in my book and if they can turn a blind eye to this then what else can they turn a blind eye too?

  17. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Can you imagine PL trying to explain why the club have entered into a new partnership with The rangers.

  18. No use banging your head, the term”Orange”will be construed as being sectarian, just the way it is.They class Rebel songs as sectarian, always have, always will.Bollox to them.I do wish though thatthe fans would cut out some of the old outdated stuff.Quite a few have little relevance now.Songs about our heroes, martyrs, always welcome.Well ,with me anyway.

  19. Compatriots,

We have had numerous songs debates on here.

As the contentious singing seems to have intensified in recent years , this debate was always going to be discussed in a wider Celtic audience.

It matters not what we think or know on here, to the wider audience it is the perception that matters.

Calling them ” complete idiots” or whatever matters not a jot to their interpretation.

Why give amunitation and a reason for OB act 2 to our enemies.

    HH.

  20. Peter Lawwell said if you give me the silver bullet he would fire it he hasn’t he’s part of the problem and is at the heart of corruption.

  21. weebobbycollins on

Fighting with my conscience now…what a massive let-down from Bankier, Lawwell et al…

I honestly am sickened by this latest from the board…

    Insulting…!!!

  22. Whether sectarian or not, stage managed or not, I felt the bulk of those attending the AGM agreed that some of the songs being sung were an embarassment. As was said, we are better than that. Imo, we certainly are. If the Green Brigade are instigating these songs, imo, they should be discouraged.

  23. Greenpinata

You have answered your question, not that you were asking one mind you, they will think what they will think so why does it matter what we sing, they will see it as sectarian no matter, if we indulge them they will want more and more till there is no more to give, eff them, they are the scum of the earth and you and others want to appease them, never as long as I breath will I do anything to appease them, never.

  24. It would not take long for EVERYONE on CQN who feels let down/angered by the AGM response ( lack of ) to resolution12 to let THEM know how we feel.
