Celtic midfield problems

645

Neil Lennon accepted responsibility for the tactical decision to start yesterday’s game with three at the back, saying, “We thought the three would suit us, but that didn’t seem to be the case. We looked a little bit flat the first 10-15 minutes and I don’t know why.”

Hibernian scored during this period, which may or may not have been a result of the defensive line-up, but if anything, Celtic were even flatter after they went to four at the back.  The game was a throwback to the days when Gordon Strachan’s teams worked hard but seldom inspired.

The midfield didn’t dominate enough of the ball to prevent Hibs creating several good chances and was unable to craft a clear-enough opening.  With Charlie Mulgrew on the field we are always dangerous, and Kris Commons has a better sense of where the goal is than anyone at the club, but without them we grasp to Paddy McCourt, who only seems to get the call when we’re in trouble.

So where do we need to strengthen next month……………?

Russell would be a good signing and one we should be pursuing. Ideally he’d stay at DU until the summer then we could sign him but is a club from down south come in next month and DU will sell then we should make our move.

Mackay Steven on the other hand should be signed now.

We could all quote examples from the real world where having a track record of success in one branch of your chosen business does not guarantee you success if you move into another branch of the business

I have never been employed in the weather business but my partner trusts me 100% when I come in and opine that the weather is either shitty or nice

NFL does himself no favours by saying ‘I got it wrong!’ He should have blamed: the match officials; injuries; poor lighting; the novovirus; the unemployed; alki heeder. Like Arsene Wenger, Ferguson, Mancini. Instead he ‘fessed up!

    A good manager?

    No, a great man!!!!

Of course you can evaluate the weather after it has happened.

I pity the man who tries to stop you having an opinion on the weather or the fitba.

But it does not make you a weatherman or a coach or manager. Those jobs are different and require different skills than the ability to make a statement. That is my point.

You may be ideally suited, however, to a TV or radio fitba pundit role or as a Scottish football journalist. Unfortunately, since you are not a Sevconian, you are likely to be doing your current job for a wee while longer.

  16. Paul67,

better article than the last one!

We play against teams in the SPL who play with 10 ten behind the ball every week. We need an attacking player (winger in old money) who can draw their defences/midfields wide and create space for the forwards. James F (and even Kris C) seem to naturally drift into the traffic-jam in the centre of the oppositions defence too often. NFL’s placing too much responsibility on the full backs to draw defences out, dilutin’ effectiveness of the CM’s and CH’s who then drift out to cover gaps.

I know this formation worked for MON with guys like Joos and Didier, but he had players in the middle who only needed one sniff to finish.

    (Well you asked)
