Celtic still looking for midfield magic

771

A comfortable win in the end masked a difficult hour for Celtic at Inverness on Saturday.  It was not until Ki Sung-Yeung replaced Georgios Samaras that Celtic were able to prize open the home team.  Ki has the range of passing and shot that makes him a formidable attacking threat but he has still to require the consistency of concentration that would make him a certain starter.

After Paddy McCourt appeared on 69 minutes Celtic were well on top.  The Irishman brings the double gifts of time and space to the team.  He has the ability to take and retain possession despite the close attention of several defenders, allowing others to take up advance positions or relieve pressure on defence.

We’ve tried more midfield formations this season that I can keep track of and despite Ki and McCourt improving Celtic considerably on Saturday I’m not going to insist either is given a starting berth.  Both still have more to give, as do the rest of the midfield.

My word the Lothian Police are looking for Vandals.

  9. UTLR – many of us wondered how they would react when their beloved club was up against the wall awaiting execution. I think we are witnessing it now.

The hatred and vitriol and down right vindictiveness has taken me by surprise in it’s intensity.

I hope the celtic Minded Supporter has been to the press in Ireland about this. The Irish News, while a firmly SDLP, middle ground publication, has a history of publicising harrasment of nationalists by the police. They would be worth contacting.

  11. BlantyreKev – I heard it on SHortbread too where they were discussing allowing the player back on at halftime. It was absolutely incredible to listen to.

  12. The idea of Celtic playing against R*ngers in the USA is ludicrous. We already have a massive fanbase there and would have nothing to gain. That other lot just want a piece of our pie, as they know we are a massive club worldwide and they are known only for their association with us.

No-one would have heard of Skeletor if it were not for He-Man, and Mumm-Ra only attained notoriety because he kept crashing Lion-O and the Thundercats’ party.

    From IMDB:

“A post-apocalyptic tale based on a novella by Harlan Ellison. A boy communicates telepathically with his dog as they scavenge for food and sex, and they stumble into an underground society where the old society is preserved. The daughter of one of the leaders of the community seduces and lures him below, where the citizens have become unable to reproduce because of being underground so long. They use him for impregnation purposes, and then plan to be rid of him”

If only they were unable to reproduce…….

I also like the idea that you can use your dog to scavenge for both nutrition and the old intercourse!

    (previous thread)

When we get the ball against Rangers we can hurt them, but when the defence is constantly fire-fighting against their high balls into the box, and failing to clear their lines, it becomes very difficult to get our midfield into the game.

Cutting off the supply of high balls is very difficult when their players very rarely take more than one touch before lumping it high into the sky. Unless we sign some effective defenders who can cope with their industrial tactics, we’ll continue to struggle to get good enough possession in midfield to hurt them.

For clarification Samaras was NOT booed by the Celtic support, nor should he have been, the TV when I watched the recording has picked up the Main Stand blaming him for the red card.

Re the red card, forget all this sympathy nonsense, the player looked, took aim and missed as Samaras had jumped higher than his elbow resulting in the hand, not the elbow making contact.

    Hard luck.

There is a kid playing for Cliftonville just now – Rory Donnelly is his name, and I sincerely hope that Celtic are looking to sign him.

£100,000 is the fee that Cliftonville would take.

  24. THE SFA’s new fast-track disciplinary system is today about to be thrown into its biggest test yet – with compliance officer Vincent Lunny faced with five potential cases.

First up before the new man at Hampden is likely to be Inverness boss Terry Butcher, who held nothing back when he complained about the performance of ref Stevie O’Reilly during Celtic’s 2-0 win over the Highland club on Saturday. Tel also let fly at the new fast-track disciplinary system, and described his previous experience of it as akin to facing a kangaroo court. On this occasion, Butcher is most incensed about the first-half dismissal of Greg Tansey for what the match official considered was a deliberate elbow into the face of Georgios Samaras. Tansey is almost certain to lodge an appeal against that red card – he has until three o’clock today to do so – and Lunny is expected to review video footage of this incident. But the compliance officer could have even more work to do relating to the Inverness club after winger Jonny Hayes posted on Twitter that: “It’s always hard playing Celtic and their 14 men.” Butcher had much more to say than his player, and blasted: “It was never a red card. It was deadly assault by fingernail. “I don’t know if we will appeal. I thought we had a chance with Chris Hogg last month when he was red-carded against Motherwell. “I went down to Glasgow to face the SFA compliance officer, but it wasn’t overturned. I faced a five-man SFA panel, so the odds were five to one against. They say the new fast-track system is good, but it’s a fast track to nowhere. “It’s a kangaroo court and there is no justice.” Butcher added: “The referee’s association are due here on Thursday (as part of a programme visiting all SPL clubs). They better have a fleet of ambulances on standby.” Lunny will also consider the case of St Johnstone boss Steve Lomas, who was spoken to by referee Euan Norris during the game at Ibrox for an alleged hand gesture made towards fourth official, Craig Thomson. Kilmarnock boss Kenny Shiels is also facing an anxious wait to see if his comments after the 1-1 draw at Easter Road is going to land him in trouble. In what was considered to be a veiled criticism of the ref, Stephen Finnie, the Killie manager said: “There were lots of mistakes, and the ineptitude of one person from the 23 starting participants had a major influence on us not winning the game.”

  25. p>WITH just over five weeks until the transfer window re-opens, Celtic are stepping up their search for the recruits believes his side needs to bring the title back to Parkhead.

The latest name linked is Spanish rising star, Jose Antonio Ruiz – nicknamed Pirulo – a 19-year-old midfielder currently catching the eye with Espanyol’s youth team. His agent, Luis Pacha, has already been in talks with Celtic about the prospect of the former Cadiz player making the move. But Espanyol have the teenager under contract for the next three years, and would be looking for a fee of around £1million to let him go. Pirulo is attracting interest from several other clubs, and Celtic will also have to fight off stiff opposition if they are to land Swedish defender Mikael Lustig. The 24-year-old is out of contract with Rosenborg in January, and this has alerted clubs in Spain and England. But Lennon watched Lustig play against England last midweek and looks ready to make his move for the man who can play in central defence and at right-back. Lennon has already made one new signing, handing a contract until the end of the season to former Arsenal midfielder and full-back Andre Blackman. The 21-year-old impressed in a trial at Lennoxtown and Lennon said: “He’s a hungry boy who wants to make a name for himself.”

I suppose rankers would want to play us in Orange County, or somewhere in Mississippi where their broadminded pointy headed cousins reside.

BCC, Rory Donnelly is maybe a good player. I have only seen him on tv but look at the last “great” at the reds…… Boyce. Now without a club and being pursued by the mighty aldershot. I feel that might be donnellys level. IMO if you haven’t been picked up by an English or Scottish club by the time your 17 I don’t think you will make it. Maybe that’s a bit harsh on Donnelly.
