Celtic to the core, Graves and your role

693

Several years ago, long before CQN, I was fortunate enough to be in the company of 10 of the 11 Lions who took the field in Lisbon.  It was a great to see them interact with each other.  A grinning Jinky walked in late, “Am I in trouble again?”, bringing a playful shout from all the others.

I’ve since met the rest of the squad who didn’t make the field, but Willie Wallace remained an unknown quantity, until this week.  I occasionally wondered what role Celtic played in the life of a man who left for Australia circa 40 years ago.

As anyone who read Willie on the blog this morning will realise, he was cut from the same wood as the rest of the team, with a deeply set Celtic grain.  When I met him on Saturday he had all the playfulness and spirit the other Lions had, but there was no hiding his sharp competitive edge when talk go around to matters on, and sometimes, off, the field.

Many thanks for chatting this morning, Willie.

If you can make it to Waterstones in Stirling tomorrow evening (late night shopping), I’ll be there with Willie, who will be signing copies of Heart of a Lion.  See you there.

I missed out on the preparations and commemorations yesterday by Celtic Graves and so many Celtic fans.  Caught up with it late in the day online.  Things about this club blow you away sometimes.  I know there is some traceable linage from Celtic Graves, though Jungle Bhoys and all the way back to Celts for Change.  With supporters like this, your club is in incredibly good hands.

At any other club these events would be remarkable.  At Celtic, they are just another chapter in a very special story.

Which takes me onto the next point………

All of these great things are underpinned by you, me and thousands of others buying season tickets each year, no matter who survives long enough to compete in the league, no matter how many times newspapers try to tell you Everton want (and will get) Neil Lennon, no matter if we win, lose or draw.

The Jungle Drums tell me sales are up on the equivalent period last year, which is great news, but it is absolutely necessary.  I want to see Celtic back in the Champions League next season, competing as effectively as they did last season.  I want to see us mature the development strategy which is already delivering such bounty.

This is your club, claim your seat and make it happen.

Stunning response to our ebay raffle and auction.  Sincere thanks to those who bought tickets and bid.  You have two days to buy a ticket for the framed Celtic top signed by the Seville squad, and a few days more for the signed and framed Messi top……..

Heart of a Lion available below, or see you at Waterstones, Stirling tomorrow evening (times will be confirmed tomorrow).

not that long ago he was getting stick for being too fat ,

    Lacking commitment etc .

This year it’s James Forrest getting it in the neck.

Willie Wallace backed him today and that’s good enough for me

Aidan back in the Hoops-Yes or No?

I know you don’t have a vested interest-:-)-just thought I’d ask when I saw you on here tonight.

  4. happy to see/ hear celtic trying to do transfer business early. would be delighted with a centre back, left sided midfielder, and a couple of forwards.

think hooper, victor, rogne, McCourt, miku, gaurdin (loanee player) are for the off and I don’t think lassad or bangurra will be at celtic park for long either.

don’t expect to see celtic spend any more than 7 million. lenny has made our team better year on year and he’ll need to bring his A game this summer to continue that trajectory given that this will be the first time he will have lost first pick players i.e. hooper and victor

Thanks – I think a charity entrance fee would be great idea but it is up to the Greenock supporters club to decide. Will suggest this now.Could we do a voluntary donation?

First question, are you going with family?

I’m asking becouse I would recommend private appartments.

I live in Warsaw but can help and tell where to go what to see. Ask Paul for my email or tell what time tomorrow you will be here?

  11. There is a YouTube entry on all Celtic goals against rangers in last decade. Amazing how many assists aide mcgeady got in those games. I think many of us bought the msm mantra that he has no end product.

    A very good player.

The referees always gave them a helping hand when required. Media – I tended to stay away . I didn’t like to be up the front so I liked to be in the middle – so nobody ever gave me a hear time.

I had my fair share of bookings – I got sent off at Parkhead I went to hit Davie Wilson when he was playing for Dundee United. I got put to right back and said something. I throw the punch but stopped so never hit him but he went down as if i did.

  16. As usual missed the Celtic boat again today……Fantastic exclusive Paul !!

Loved just as much the CQN house craic, who were fantastic hosts to Our Wullie.

In the history of FC Barcelona the list of players includes

    Wallace I ( 1905 – 1915 ) 120 appearances

    Wallace II ( 1908 – 1909 ) 12 appearances

    Way before Stevie Archibald.

marrakesh express-hope I’m not butting in-no doubt Zybszek will get back to you and give you the full benefit of his local knowledge-until then-

You will love Krakow-a beautiful city and the people are very warm and friendly and the local cuisine and beer are top notch and very inexpensive.

As for Auschwitz-for me was a life changing experience-a group of us took the guided tour-would recommend you do the same.

Also worth a visit-time permitting-are the Salt Mines-amazing sculptures-and a visit to the birth place of Pope John Paul II-name of town escapes me-but not too far from Krakow-you can enjoy a nice tour around the house he grew up in and see where he went to school.

That was a bit sketchy-hope Zbyszek can put some better flesh on these bones-Anyhow-hope you have a great trip.

    Six.

  19. Always had a soft spot for Aiden , if we are comparing him with Kris

one way to do it is ask yourself which player would European defences prefer

    to avoid

Pretty sure it would be Aiden

Kojo-never liked Thatcher!-am glad she’s well beyond even the ministrations of the good Dr.Frankenstein!

As for Aidan-loved him in the Hoops-never say never-we could do much worse!

BTW-and just to remind you-we have “spoken” before-a few moons ago!-I recall your castigating my nom de blog for having more than your preferred 2 syllables!

    Enjoy the jigging-you still participate?

  26. Kojo,

Do you want Thatcher and Aiden back or Neither.

I would love to see one back but not the other (can you guess who)

    p.s. I have never ran a quiz.

  27. West Wales Celt on

According to the MSM Stoke have allegedly chosem Sparky over MON. Unless talks with Martin floundered on the budget issue I personally find that a ludicrous choice…

  28. …. given other than NFL, Aiden endured racism and sectarianism on a scale, no other player or anyone be subjected to within this backward wee country, to see supposed CFC fans question his devotion to our club or indeed his ability, totally baffles me …. too many people actually listen to the Scottish msm and allow themselves to be influenced by their agenda. Shame on you.

  29. West Wales Celt on

    Jude:

There may be a host of reasons for wanting Aiden to return but his propensity to make the huns look sh*te would no longer be one of them given their recent pitiful demise…
