Celtic to the core, Graves and your role

693

Several years ago, long before CQN, I was fortunate enough to be in the company of 10 of the 11 Lions who took the field in Lisbon.  It was a great to see them interact with each other.  A grinning Jinky walked in late, “Am I in trouble again?”, bringing a playful shout from all the others.

I’ve since met the rest of the squad who didn’t make the field, but Willie Wallace remained an unknown quantity, until this week.  I occasionally wondered what role Celtic played in the life of a man who left for Australia circa 40 years ago.

As anyone who read Willie on the blog this morning will realise, he was cut from the same wood as the rest of the team, with a deeply set Celtic grain.  When I met him on Saturday he had all the playfulness and spirit the other Lions had, but there was no hiding his sharp competitive edge when talk go around to matters on, and sometimes, off, the field.

Many thanks for chatting this morning, Willie.

If you can make it to Waterstones in Stirling tomorrow evening (late night shopping), I’ll be there with Willie, who will be signing copies of Heart of a Lion.  See you there.

I missed out on the preparations and commemorations yesterday by Celtic Graves and so many Celtic fans.  Caught up with it late in the day online.  Things about this club blow you away sometimes.  I know there is some traceable linage from Celtic Graves, though Jungle Bhoys and all the way back to Celts for Change.  With supporters like this, your club is in incredibly good hands.

At any other club these events would be remarkable.  At Celtic, they are just another chapter in a very special story.

Which takes me onto the next point………

All of these great things are underpinned by you, me and thousands of others buying season tickets each year, no matter who survives long enough to compete in the league, no matter how many times newspapers try to tell you Everton want (and will get) Neil Lennon, no matter if we win, lose or draw.

The Jungle Drums tell me sales are up on the equivalent period last year, which is great news, but it is absolutely necessary.  I want to see Celtic back in the Champions League next season, competing as effectively as they did last season.  I want to see us mature the development strategy which is already delivering such bounty.

This is your club, claim your seat and make it happen.

Stunning response to our ebay raffle and auction.  Sincere thanks to those who bought tickets and bid.  You have two days to buy a ticket for the framed Celtic top signed by the Seville squad, and a few days more for the signed and framed Messi top……..

Heart of a Lion available below, or see you at Waterstones, Stirling tomorrow evening (times will be confirmed tomorrow).

Fergus McCann has explained why he couldn’t let Celtic be liquidated. In the spring of 1994 the bills were piling up for the old board that had led Celtic on the road to ruin with the Taylor Report about to condemn the terraces of Celtic Park to the history books. On the pitch Lee Martin and Wayne Biggins had failed to lift the side with Tommy Coyne’s goal for Motherwell ending the club’s interest in the Scottish Cup which had kept many a previous season alive.McCann and others had tried and failed to convince the Kelly and White families that new investment was needed but it was only when they were faced with bankruptcy that they called on McCann to save the day.“The balance sheet turned out to be negative — insolvent.,” McCann explained in an interview with The Sun. “Other liabilities — even a big tax claim regarding Paul Elliott — had to be met.“It would’ve cost less, and left the previous owners with nothing, to go into liquidation but it would also be humiliating for Celtic. So we paid all the bills.”HMRC, Strathclyde Police, newsagents and even face-painters all got their money as a new chapter at Celtic kicked off.Transforming the ground into a 60,000 seater stadium capable of hosting Champions League nights seemed a pipedream as Rangers under the guidance of Dave Murray swept the boards from the 50,000 capacity Ibrox Stadium with plans in place for a 5,000 bed hotel, conference centre and retractable roof set to turn the Govan venue into a 365-days-a-year money making machine.Over five years the capacity of Celtic Park was raised to 60,000 and although crowds have now dipped McCann has no regrets about the bold decision that ensured Celtic could generate more matchday income than their city rivals.Critical to the success of the McCann plan was the support with thousands showing their faith by pouring their money into a share issue in January 1995.“Although many said that relying on supporters to provide more capital in a share issue was a gamble that wouldn’t succeed, the fans came through with £10million,” the Scots-Canadian explained.“It was an exciting time, but a daunting responsibility to take on. I was now responsible to 10,000 shareholders as well. When I set a target of 52,000 season tickets, the support understood and responded.“And it took a few years for success on the field to occur. Celtic Park was built with 60,000 seats for a reason — active supporters who make the commitment to be there to fill it instead of watching TV are the strength of the club.”

Craig Whyte’s lawyers send Letter Before Action

Channel 4 News has seen a copy of the Letter Before Action now sent from lawyers acting for Craig Whyte, to Rangers FC and key shareholders involved with the club.

Of course they insist they are absolutely serious and this matter is heading to court if the Principals don’t get what they want from Rangers, Charles Green and Imran Ahmad (who remain major shareholders though physically departed from Ibrox).

There are 333 pages of evidence. There are company forms; agreements; text messages; emails and tape-recordings supplied as evidence.

29 rangers r w Craig Whytes lawyers send Letter Before Action

The case they plead is essentially that Craig Whyte and his associate Aidan Earley were deprived of their legitimate interest in the Rangers that arose from the ashes of Administration and Liquidation.

Specifically that Craig Whyte is due £137,000 and “an opportunity to redeem his reputation by achieving a turnaround success at Rangers Football Club.”

And this not happening is deemed to have “…hindered his ability to conduct business activities in Scotland and/or elsewhere.”

This is an interesting claim which will raise some eyebrows since it rests upon Craig Whyte being keen to be involved in Scottish football from which he’d been banned by the SFA just prior to his Rescue Plan for Rangers unfolding.

But the Principals – as Craig Whyte and Aidan Earley are referred to – believed that if a new Rangers company was “quoted on a public market” then the SFA ban could be got around.

Initially the whole Rescue Plan relied on Craig Whyte not being a public part of it at all:

“The Principals also decided that it was desirable that Mr Whyte should not be seen as directly involved in any bid. This was because Mr Whyte was unpopular with the Rangers fans…The Principals concluded it would be necessary to find someone to front the transaction for them.”

And that man – they claim – was Charles Green. Mr Green of course vehemently denies it.

The documentation lays out in great detail how this situation and what followed arose. Hotel meetings in London laboriously listed and detailed right down to tape recordings, texts and emails.

And how they were keen to bring in others to pump investment into Rangers:

“The Principals introduced Jim Park as a consultant in order to introduce Mike Ashley, owner of Newcastle United, who became both a key investor and developer of the RFC retail arm…”

And it all boils to this, from Craig Whyte’s lawyers:

“Our clients have instructed us to issue court proceedings on their behalf against the following Defendants:

    – Mr Ahmad and Mr Green for breach of contract and unjust enrichment

    – Mr Ahmad, Mr Stockbridge and Mr Green for conspiracy and deceit

    – Mr Ahmad and Mr Stockbridge for dishonest assistance

    – Mr Green for breach of trust, breach of fiduciary duty and for indemnity and/or

restitution and/or an account of gains under s195 Companies Act 2006

    – RFCL for knowing receipt, unjust enrichment, indemnity and/or restitution and/or an account of gains under s195 Companies Act 2006 and for a declaration that it holds property on trust for Sevco 5088

    – Zeus for, inter alia, dishonest assistance, conspiracy and deceit

    – Rangers International for unjust enrichment, knowing receipt and a declaration that it hold any shares registered or to be registered in its name in Sevco 5088 on trust for the Principals”

Channel 4 News is seeking a response from Mr Ahmad, Mr Green, Mr Stockbridge, Zeus Capital and RFC.

Willie will be back here shortly and will post re Kano – he missed that this morning as we were trying to get away for the interview but after explaining to him the significance to all CQNers Willie asked could be put up a wee message.

  24. From the Scotsman..

A Celtic fan who sang a pro-IRA song has been cleared in a landmark ruling that could have an effect on future cases where charges have been brought under the Offensive Behaviour at Football bill.

Sherrif Margaret Neilson cleared Celtic fan Calum Graham of singing a chant that was “likely to incite public disorder” after being accused of singing a pro-terrorist song at a football match.

In her judgement, Sherrif Neilson said that it was not enough for a song to be offensive to warrant a conviction.

She said: “Parliament clearly has it in mind that you must pass this hurdle [of inciting public disorder] for it to be an offence,” she explained, admitting she had “certain sympathy” with the police trying to deal with the legislation.

Police identified Graham as he sung The Roll Of Honour at a match between Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Celtic on August 25 last year. The song is a pro-IRA song commemorating hunger strikers in Northern Ireland prisons.

The fan, from Glasgow, admitted he was one of a group singing it but denied behaving in an offensive manner likely to incite public disorder.

The court heard Graham was among dozens of fans caught chanting on camera by officers drafted in from Glasgow.

The judgement has lead to calls for a review of the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012.

Labour justice spokesman Lewis Macdonald said the law was “fundamentally flawed”, before adding: “Neither the police nor the courts cam be expected to have clarity about what constitutes an offence when the Government wasn’t able to provide evidence of this to Parliament.

“It is essential this legislation is urgently reviewed before the start of the new season”

Missed Willie Wallace this morning, good stuff though.

As for the huns stuff, I understand that CW’s briefs are working on a no win no fee basis, but would there not have to be a considerable sum lodged with the court by the plaintifs or the defendants for that matter, for court costs ?

Just something from way back that is telling me this.
