  1. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Enjoyed today.

     

     

    First 11 well ahead of the opposition.

     

     

    Five subs at half time. Performance level still not bad.

     

     

    Next batch of subs saw the performance deteriorate significantly.

     

     

    Add the injured Hatate and Giakoumakis to the mix and Ange probably has 18-19 guys he can rely on?

     

     

    IMHO – that is 3 short

    Celtic coaches can only develop so far.

     

    Players must play.

     

    How else can the player really see what their strengths and weaknesses are except in a match situation playing against opponents of as high a standard as possible.

     

    It’s the only way to really develop.

    Great to watch the hoops but a reminder that friendlies are merely a dead rubber and a bit of a weird environment to be truly judged on. For the core team it was more minutes in their legs and for those on the periphery the added pressure of ‘taking their chance’ with unfamiliar people in unfamiliar places…

     

     

    Vata looked nervous, Johntson poor, Lawal the curse of the right footed left CH then fell apart, Bernabei hasn’t understood our system (see Callum pointing him inside at one point and got the robust challenge from Rovers too) but offered so much more than the perennial backward pass of Taylor.

     

     

    Biggest issue is that we still don’t seem to be able to play out from the back yet and need more quality in key places (Ball-playing GK although won;t happen, DCM, RW as James’s pace is gone and a left-footed CH of quality). Lots of great attacking mids and forward, the defensive unit needs addressed still for the challenge in Europe.

    Fitness,match sharpness and learning is what these games are about. As soon as we made wholesale changes the game was going to change. There’s no learning in that team structure wise, it’s natural. It still leaves space to learn about individuals.

     

     

    The learning bit today seems to be we really need one more good centre half and we could do with a CDM. If julien had any future with us he would be getting game time with CCV but he isn’t as far as I can tell. He’s way off it.

     

     

    We have a good starting lineup and we will have a decent bench. We don’t have and never will have the fabled (and bullcrap notion) two teams that could win the league. Some of the guys playing today might get a few games but they will be in with 8 or 9 proper first team ready players.

     

     

    Ange says he wants a bit more quality in the door. That’s exactly it. That’s how to evolve.

     

     

    Two weeks to go until we get to see the real team in real action.

    I have not posted in years. Actually only ever made a few posts ( although I did get 2 podia under the name of Mrs Miggins) I continue to lurk every day, and have done so since the very start of CQN. I got really fed up with the bickering and abuse being dished out so I’ve refrained from posting because the blog has been completely ruined by trolls.

     

    I have just returned from Celtic Park after a great wee day out and I’m really happy after seeing the ground, the fans, the team, the post match in the Tavern on Tollcross Road. It’s been a great day out.

     

    However I think I can’t go any longer without saying that the time has come for that W called Mad Mitch to GTF. He is a horrible conniving little C.

     

    I scroll past his drivel, in fact it’s automatic now, but I can’t help that sometimes I accidentally catch some of his BS.

     

    He is a C, but unfortunately he’s not alone. Too many good posters have left this place because of him and his ilk.

     

    Worse than Huns. Could be that they are.

    The first half was very good imo, but with all the changes came a factured team and the fluid football in the first half was replaced by a big drop off. It’s a preseason friendly and players need to play. Not concerned at all at this stage. Think bernadi (leftback) will be just fine once he settles into the team.

     

     

    Ange quoted is Scotsmen saying expecting a couple of new quality players over the line in next 7 days. I just hope his a leftsided centreback with pace and a dcm with those defensive instincts. Even at this staged wothout the additions we are far and away better prepared for the season ahead than we were last season.

     

     

    we have better individual players and are collectively better as a team. Sick of hearing we are not as strong as last season because bitton and rogic are gone, that is simply not true. Bitton was a liability most of his celtic career and rogic could be great or piss, very inconsistent and fell out of big games to often.

    We invite quick transitions in front of us that put lots of pressure on the defence. Callum defensively is really poor at a high level and Turnbull / O’Riley don”t do enough on that side of the game. We’re exposed after a poor pass or press.

     

     

    Too simple to say mid/for good and defence bad.

     

     

    If we are a team that wants to play out confidently from the back then it starts with better GK for that and defenders who can do it consistently – too many struggle with it & Siegrist is a good stopper and non-existent footballer.

     

     

    Ange hoping that weaker players + constantly better coaching comes good as we can’t afford those who do it well elsewhere.

    I think Ange has spoken about Reid being a B Team hire and the 2 coming are adding to the quality of what the first team needs. That’s how I’m reading it.

     

     

    I hope…we need a DCM and CH this week to lift the team a level.
