  1. Sammi was very Sammi-ish this season.

I thought he looked unhappy all throughout as if he wanted to be elsewhere.

A bit surprised that he wants to stay but he must be on big money by Celtic standards.

I can’t remember another player in recent years who was so often a combination of being unplayable one week and then maybe awful the next.

“Lenny pretty much saying it’s not up to him if one of his players stays or not is a bit of a concern. Sami wants to stay surely the manager should have the final say, no?”

In modern football very few managers have any say in these matters.

I am sorry to see big Sammi leave the club. But player trading is part of football. He has given Celtic great service and has decided he was worth more than what was on the table.

None of us know what the offer was. The big man goes with my best wishes.

I don’t think he did. He indicated he would have liked to have stayed but ‘it was out of his hands’.

Congratulations to the team and the fans today a great display by both.

Good to see legends Hartson and Petrov recovering well

Goodbye and Good luck to Sammi, you did well when you were here (once Lenny moved you out left)…Im sure if he went into PL’s office and said I dont need the money Im a rich man I’ll play for half my wage we would have re-signed him.

Scottish football is struggling and it would be folly to resign him…

The tears against United reminded me of Henke…and the sun reminded me of a game against D Utd before the Lou Macari testimonial….In this game did Murdo Macleod hit a screamer of a free kick?

  9. The mock horror on CQN still amazes me. Money is a key factor in signing or not signing players. Some folk announce this with great umbrage.

Honestly, folk. In your own household, is money not a factor? Who among us gets everything they ever wanted?

There is clear logic behind not giving Sammi another contract. For the kind of money we are paying him, we need more consistency.

But go on, bash the board.

  10. Like ye all I heard what Lenny said. Lenny was in a tricky position, Title Celebrations underway a tearful Sammi with a special child in his arms saying he didn’t want to go. I have absolutely no doubt that PL & Lenny work hand in hand. P.L. does the negotiating but Lenny is kept in the loop and his opinions are taken into account. Anyways as a couple of posters said already lets keep the dissection to another day. Celebrate what Wee Oscar achieved in 5 years and Celtic’s 3 in a row.

  12. Since we operate as a business and abide by FFP rules then we have finite resources to recruit & retain players.

It seems that Sammi would have liked to stay, and in an ideal world NL would have liked him to stay – I haven’t heard/read anything from either yet.

NL has to operate on a budget approved by the board – but – and this is opinion, I struggle to believe that if NL really wanted to keep him as a priority that PL would insist that he had to go.

Money is the issue clearly, either no contract renewal was offered or insufficient to keep Sammi at the club.

Life goes on, and change is constant.

Can we have at least one day to enjoy 3-in-a-row without PL or board bashing.

And Happy Mother’s Day to Mrs RWE, Mrs. ‘GG, Mrs NCTim, Mrs mjcnc, and Mrs DontShrink and any other stateside Mums in Timland.

And Sammi did so love the club that he gave the fans his only son. Beats a pair of VVD’s boots. I hope he was putting the child back where he came from.

Another little vignette was played out when Lenny was in the far left corner, looking out from the Main Stand. He spotted a Tricolour on the ground, picked it up and waved it, much to the crowd’s delight. I looked away, looked back and the flag was on the ground an Neil had the Cup in his hands for a close up with a couple of press photographers. He gave a nod, presumably to his boy to pick up the flag. The kid not only picks it up but drapes it over his father’s shoulders… I wonder what pic will be on the back page tomorrow.

“To make those comments right in the middle of title celebrations was taking the huf ..? …. Anyway, not to worry….in Neil I trust”

He was only answering a question on his future. It’s not like he just dropped it into the conversation.

It’s no big deal though. Players move on all the time. Good luck to Sammi. He’s given Celtic good service.

  19. weeron- Good point, and you know what?- if Sammi was offered a contract I bet the same people would be on knocking PL for giving him a new contract after such an indifferent season.

Any excuse to have a go at the Board.

  20. Not generally a big fan of our board.

But in the Sammi situation they have got it right.

I am not sure he fits our tactical style.

Can be fantastic but lacks consistency .

Our present environment does not allow for luxury players.

I often defended Sammi on here and think he is an excellent player but his time is over.

  21. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

Neil Lennon said that whether Sammi stayed, or not, depended on negotiations between the player’s people and the club; not him.

I think that is the case with every player, at every club.

Some players want to go, some players want to stay. C’est la vie.

I was a Sammi fan from his first game till his last game today.

He was a ace in the pack for us.

He gave us something unique in our game. Unpredictable and a match winner.

However, as Neil famously said, he is the kind of player who would get you the sack, and, as such, you would not build your core strategy around him.

I think the time is right for him to move on, if, for no other reason than the fact that his effect in Europe was nullified last year.

For those bemoaning the fact that it should be exclusively the manager’s decision on who comes in or leaves a club, think that you are living in a bygone age, or else subscribing to the Super Salary school of football manager.

How many old school managers, like ‘Arry Rednut have bankrupted clubs through their own egos?

We don’t have managers now, they are,or should be coaches.

Anyway, good luck Sammi and thanks for the memories, good, bad and indifferent and I know that in years to come today’s young fans will talk of you with reverence and affection and, that we will never read about you bad mouthing the club, your team mates or manager.

If an Arsenal fan ‘ad bet a Spurs fen £50 a season, dable or quits, his team would finish abav Spurs, since Wenger became boss, the Spurs fan would owe him £13,107,200!

    If I’d bet a hun that since 2011 he’d owe me £50.

Just back from the game. Great day. Green Brigade’s banner and standing ovation for Wee Oscar on 5 minutes eas very poignant.Great to see BBJ and Stan Petrov at end of game. Great reception from fans for both.

Loved the game. Some great football and a very impressive performance from MoM Filip Twardzik. I’ve seen play bits of games before and never saw enough to be convinced. However, he was outstanding today and I think he will be a great player for us in the future. It will be good for Emilio to have some real competition for the left back spot.

All in all, a great day.

If, and it’s still an if, sammy wasn’t offered a contract, that doesn’t mean negotiations didn’t take place. The gap between both parties may have been so large that a contract offer was pointless. One goal at home all season wasn’t really forcing anyone’s hand.

I wish the big guy all the best but time to move on.

It appears there was no contract offer at all?

Now I don’t expect our wage structure to be broken but to not even offer a player of Sami’s ability and monetary value any deal whatsoever seems very strange indeed. Especially a player who the manager clearly rates. What was it Lenny said a few weeks back? Something about Samaras being worth 5mil in today’s market.

If that’s what Neil values him at then to let that walk out the door for nothing makes no sense at all.

    Samaras

For the sort money he would be offered in Turkey as part of a free contract he would need to be the most consistently best player by miles at Celtic and he is neither the best player at the club nor the most consistent.

He’s done well from Celtic despite never producing 6 good games in a row. He remains first choice striker for a team who consistently qualify for major tournaments. We can always be thankful for his performances in qualification for the Champions League last season and in those 4 games, he earned his corn.

Quite simply he doesn’t produce the goods often enough and at the money his agents will have demanded, he should seek that elsewhere.

Watched the entire coverage today. Well done to the team on winning. The Arabs for giving us a good game. Lovely to hear and see all the references to wee Oscar today. Great seeing Stan and BBJ a great choice and good to see them looking so good. Well done also to the young lads at half time. I am sure they loved it. Good luck to Sammi and Johan in the future.

“It appears there was no contract offer at all?”

Sammi didn’t say that in the interview I was listening to. He indicated that a deal couldn’t be reached.

“If that’s what Neil values him at then to let that walk out the door for nothing makes no sense at all.”

I agree with Lenny on his valuation. But if a player decides to run down his contract, there is nothing any club can do about that post-Bosman.

Ticket office queue was long!! Did my good deed for today, a young lad on the next window asked for a ticket anywhere in the lower stands paying cash. When the ticket office staff asked for £17 he put his head in his hands was short a fiver!

Gave him a fiver for his ticket, very thankful hopefully he enjoyed what he saw of the game and the celebrations afterwards.
