  1. I haven’t read back and I know this might sound heretical given how important our captain is but I think we really need to play the team we had earlier in the season when he was out injured. It was when McGregor was playing in our captain’s place that we were most effective and entertaining. Of course, Christie and Rogic were fit then too.

RS were “unaccountably” chirpy this evening. I wonder why???? They have stopped even bothering to make any pretence of their “loyalties”.

  2. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    BP1,

If we play like that we’ll win buy a barrel load, Aberdeen wont play 11 behind the ball, theres space already opened up

  3. If you play 3 at the back, you simply must play 2 up front. If we had done that from the start instead of too late in the game, we would likely have won today.

With 3 at the back and 1 up top, it means we have 6 in a packed midfield. With their ultra defensive tactics, it just means a huge area of congestion akin to a brick wall.

We needed to get the ball behind them or over them quickly and with 2 up top we would have caused many more problems for their packed defence. Too many backward and sideways passes again today. No real imagination or killer passes. We could really do with a Lubo Nakamura !

  4. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession, hope you are right, nice to see you posting.hh,

  5. CANAMALAR @ 7:28 PM,

Yes, thought we moved the ball welll at times and had some good link up play. I really can’t see that this was a poor performance. We have had several games like this now. We have had some late magic from someone, normally Edouard, Forrest or both to make the difference.

Livi had done their homework and contained that threat. Also our superior athleticism, fitness and technical ability that impacts the end game was missing today.

    Hail Hail

  6. Aberdeen will have to be very good to beat us.

unless they park the bus and take us to penalties.

  7. Days like today can happened and may often require a set piece or similar to break the deadlock. The most concerning aspect for me wasn’t the performance but the sheer tactical ineptitude. In the first half we had 3 defenders at the back and Brown dropping in, so two spare men and and we had an isolated striker of our own. Not enough done to change the system in the second half. A real lack of width and support on the right side wasn’t addressed. Rogic was operating on fumes after half time but Hayes brought on, really? The set pieces are laughable as well. How many times does the ball drop at the back post and nobody is there? Not good enough from Neil today.

  8. So, assuming the Hun win tomorrow, wat do we need to win the league?

Not got a mathematical brain me

    B-)

  9. Well said Saint Stivs.

Disappointed today obviously. None of these guys were signed by Neil Lennon. Was a lack of flair though Weah was a positive. I posted about big Ollie. He did miss a sitter but cant blame him for the result. Ollie is not a natursl footballer. Has tremendous pace and is best employed out wide. Would like to see him doing well. No need to press the panic button.

Need someone like Sevco’s Kent who has confidence and quick feet as well as quick hands.

Last season , Celtic under Brendan Rodgers had 10 draws in the league. 8 OF THEM AT CELTIC PARK. FIVE of them were 0-0 all of them after the 0-0 with the zombie club.

Why are people shocked we have a draw against a park the bus team. We had 11 shots on target. But hey, let’s moan about Lennon. Usual shite on CQN, Supporters my arse.

*Fully concur as I’ve previously mentioned I’m loathe tae criticise the players or management team, I just watched IMHO the best team in Europe right now who after taking a 4 minute lead couldnae finish off a side that was content tae play on the break. City had a 70/30 percentage possession, we had a 73/27 although our shots were far superior 18/3 with shots on goal 11/1, I’ve seen plenty of games like the day, aye even with the Lions. Don’t forget that earlier this season we went tae Livi with the self opinionated new special one and tied 0-0, the excuse then was the pitch.

I honestly believe that next Sunday we will scud the sheep, they will now feel after reading mersey tunnel mooths urine and the days result that they can beat us and probably open up which will suit us on a wide open hunden.

BTW love this quote fae mcsleekit “We’ve got a semi-final to look forward to so now we want to give ourselves the best chance against the best team in the country.” lol

*and a fraudster manager who did his damnedest tae sell out the patriot game.

  16. Like everyone else I haven’t a scooby who next year’s manager will be but I personally want NL in chargeI was desperate for him to get the job the last time and I think Neil and PL and DD made the right decision when he left.

I think his remit just now is to make sure everything regarding the players is going smoothly on and off the park and for him and JK to keep the familiar systems and formations were kept.

The results since he came in have been better than anyone’s expectations and he should be given great credit for that.

I think if he was in charge next season we would be far more direct domestically than now and he wouldn’t care about a backs-to-the-wall draw or win in Europe and he doesn’t think it’s beneath him to put his centre half up front if we’re chasing a goal ( see Boyatta against Hearts ).

I think last time his league win record was 70%ish- with our much bigger budget and the fact that he is older and wiser I believe this would get bigger.

Obviously everyone has there own opinion but I think NL ( and signings like McKenna and McGinn ) would guarantee 10inarow.

Apols for long post but great article from Oliver Kay in The Times about potential Champions League changes. It gets crowded in the Billy Wright Stand on match nights at Molineux. On the first-floor landing, outside the executive boxes, fans are drawn to the cabinets that show off memorabilia from Wolverhampton Wanderers’ illustrious past. Rest snipped.

*Terrific article, what a lot don’t know is that Chelsea were the English champions in 1955 future West ham manager Ron Greenwood was their centre half and had a crackin striker called Roy Bentley, they were scheduled to appear in the first EC but the snottery FA thought that was beneath them and they pulled out. Hibs with their famous five managed tae get tae the semis where they lost tae French champions Reims who lost 3-4 tae Real in the final after leading 3 times.

Wolves at one time were one of england’s premier teams, League champions three times, 195/54, 1957/58 and 1958/59, under the management of Stan Cullis’ who the Big Mhan was allegedly going tae replace just prior tae coming tae us, they also finished League runners-up on five occasions including the year Chelsea won it.

Wolves have also won the FA Cup four times and finished runners-up on a further four occasions and have also won the League Cup twice.

They were one of the first British clubs to install floodlights taking part in televised “floodlit friendlies” against leading overseas club sides between 1953 and 1956 before the creation of the European Cup in 1955.

They opened our floodlights, said to be the biggest and best in the UK at the time, its alleged the selling of Bobby Collins and Willie Fernie helped pay for them, on the way to the game which included 3 members of the 7-1 team and 2 future Lions my da was raving about the new young centre we had, Ian Lochhead, he only played 12 games for us scoring 3 goals before being freed briefly playing for Dumbarton but lasted only a few months after which it seems he appears to at the age of 22 retired from the game.

They also reached the quarter-finals of the 1959–60 European Cup and the semi-finals of the 1960–61 European Cup Winners’ Cup, and were runners-up to Tottenham in the inaugural 1972 UEFA Cup Final.

They had some marvelous players during the 50s including former England captains Billy Wright, Bert Slater and Ron Flowers, however the one I recall most was goalie Malcolm Finlayson who won 2 Champions and 1 FA Cup winning medals and yet like another successful Scottish goalie the faither, who won 2 FA Cup winning medals, never won a cap while playing down there.

Although Spurs Bill Brown was the national goalie, others like George Farm, Lawrie Leslie and our own big Frank Haffey were rewarded with caps yet those two stalwarts of the game were left out, that is until Ronnie played for us.

George did play in 2 FA Cup finals winning one but both Lawrie and Franks trophy clam tae fame was runners up tae Clyde and Dunfermline respectively in games they were favoured tae win.

Malcolm Finlayson was born in Bonhill, same place as our first goalscorer Neilly McCallum as was Liverpool’s first ever captain and goalscorer Malcolm McVean.

When with Yoker Athletic he did have trial with us, we were short handed in goals at the time, and was offered terms but had already promised Millwall he would sign for them.

IMHO for all of Wolverhampton’s illustrious history their greatest claim tae fame is a journalist who after witnessing a visiting teams hordes looting and pillaging and destroying everything in their path compared them tae “coming across the border like marauding huns”, this in a game where they had over 2 legs defeated the current FA Cup holders in the semis of the Lavvy Cup, thank the Lord for Fiorentina in the final, wonder who they were lol.

  19. ” HEADTHEBALL on 6TH APRIL 2019 8:32 PM

I thought the bhoys tried hard today and were unlucky not to get a goal or two.”

That`s in a a nutshell for me though I would add ( I don`t like nutshells) that I thought we played very well for most of the first half. Some of the quick, inter-play was , IMO , excellent.

On another note, I am thinking of not renewing next year as I am growing so fed up with the negativity regarding our team. Considering our record ( compared with any period in our illustrious existence), we are doing well. Possibly even very well yet so many still moan and moan and moan then glibly excuse themselves in telling us that `everyone is entitled to an opinion`. Oh, no , they are not !!

  20. I wonder if that boy Kent will be this year’s big announcement to sell season tickets a la Barton and Bruno Alves

  21. TT – you memories are a treasure

JJ – spot on. At most 5, possibly 4 more points needed for 8 in a row…wow…I’m witnessing that in my lifetime. And the demise of those who lorded it over us…

Keep playing the way we did today and it won’t be long before we’re back in hunskelping territory.

As TT and I both said in midweek… We feared the St game more than the sevco game… I feared today’s game more than next week.

  22. Big Dan Rodgers has moved Leicester from 12th to 7th position in the EPL, at £2.5M being paid for each ascending position, he has already made them £12.5.

How about him taking Compper, Benyu, and De Vries – Hell, we’ll even throw in Hendry and build a cafe for Almore with the rest.

It could be his good faith gesture in the forgiveness process.

    Just thought about that…….Nae chance.

Just back from a horrible match but a grand day out. Never get tired of watching The Celtic even when not at their best. Grandson a wee bit disappointed he didn’t see a goal, but he was shouting like a good yin at the end screaming for a last minute goal.

Really enjoyed our meet-up and good to see Old Tim & Blantyre Tim in such good fettle.

If you’re lurkin, D, grandson now a proud owner of a pair of Celtic goalkeeper’s gloves. He loves them, having already tried them out in the near darkness. Think some of TOHG’s magic is rubbing off on him!

Watching that turgid exhibition today was marginally less exciting than watching paint dry.

After getting home, I decided to watch Bayern play Dortmund. First goal, perfect corner for Hummels to bullet header into goal, another player at the back post just in case. Nothing like our ludicrous corners that bypass everybody. Why can’t Ajer or Simunovic ever get a clean header on goal? Because our corners and free kicks carry no threat whatsoever, and we have tried Tierney, Sinclair, Christie, McGregor, Ntcham and Izzy. Forrest must be really bad in practice, because he has not been used. We tried one short corner today, and in no time flat, we had worked it back to the halfway line.

Third goal, perfectly worked and flighted free kick ending up with Martinez belting a goal from outside the box. We had no shots from outside the box today, and the statistic that we had 11 on target is deceptive. A spectator could have stepped out of the crowd and stopped them, they were so abysmally weak.

Fourth goal, a perfectly flighted cross aimed at Gnabry to head home. I didn’t see one cross today that appeared to be aimed at a particular player. They were all hit in hope, and hopelessly over hit.

Fifth goal, the right winger hits the line and passes across the goal line for a simple tap in. Did Forrest once reach the line, look up and pass to feet today?

It utterly baffles me why our coaching staff does not address our quite obvious set piece deficiencies. BR didn’t do it, and it appears that Lenny has followed suit. Remember when big Billy, Sutton, Hartson, Henrik, et al carried a massive goal threat at corners? Well, someone had to place the ball where they could reach it. We have missed 5 penalties this season, and nothing has been done to address this either. So what do we actually do at Lennoxtown?

I guess I shouldn’t watch teams like Bayern. It just throws into relief the poverty of skill, technique and ability we watched today.

  26. just in from game, thoughts , what kind of formation was that 3,6,1.

KT playing as a left winger, give us a break, play SS.

RC wastes more time at taking corners as their goalie takes at bye kicks, EVERY cross from corners or free kicks from us goes behind our players , why pack their goalmouth with players at corners and not have players on the edge of the box and also have someone wide on the opposite side from the corner incase of a over hit ball that goes out of play for a shy that happened today.

our 3 centre half playing keep ball by playing sideways and backwards between themselves when under no pressure , get the ball moving forward with tempo and pace.

NL tactically will not do , we need fresh ideas and thinking our positional sense at corners/ free kicks/throw ins is shocking , do we practise this at Lennoxtown.

livi will drive supporters away , a free game for them but still they play 10 men behind the ball.

posted this earlier and my thoughts haven’t changed.
