You have to bear in mind that changing a complete team makes it hard individually and collectively. It’s not just fitness they lack but they haven’t had time to build relationships or partnerships on the pitch.
As someone pointed out earlier, if you dropped one of these players into the first team, there’s a chance they’d perform better than they are tonight.
Granted, some simply aren’t up to it but I wouldn’t be writing off Shaw or Scales just yet, for example.
