  1. Tom Rogic , seemed out of sorts , trying to play a striker’s role,we didn’t play well ,but I just goes to show ,when you haven’t, another striker ,then it showed up last night,as for Ajer I thought was ok, but for me ,not a permanent centre half, but going on what a lot of Supporters were saying,we definitely need another striker, and me another Centre Half

Say what you want about the GB but one thing badly missing last night was the good old Celtic songbook. In their absence, far too many rebel songs were heard. It’s something that really annoys me. You’ll be hard pushed to find a Hun number which doesn’t reference Pope, Fenians, Bobby Sands etc, so it’s easy to knock them..Yet we have arguably the best repertoire in British football and on occasion like last night, hardly use it?

  3. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Good Morning Bhoys I think we got a little lucky last night RBK should have scored however, at 0-0 we still have a chance. If we lose in Norway do we automaticaly drop in to the Europa league ? H.H.

A few things still persist even having slept on it.

Last night shouldve been a utopia for the PLC board, a sanatised support (despite some valiant efforts from both sides of the ground during the game) but it was flat and uninspiring.

Secondly, and im not claiming ownership of this, shamelessly stolen, but those that run Celtic dont have the necessary mentality for us to be a perennial Champions League team. Arguably, and i think its a strong argument, we were a considerably weaker team last night than the one that finished the season. Seeing as we are only destined to have 2 strikers (which i cant fathom) then BR needs to find another solution than Sinclair/Rogic/Whoever he thinks can play the false 9, as based on last nights performance and some of the performances last season, playing without a striker, he lets himself down (he hasnt many flaws but this, imho, is his biggest) (I know we still beat teams, and some of them comfortably, but an organised team which is well drilled is something we rarely come up against, especially with no striker)

Pass marks to Gordon, Jozo and Ajer, substitutes i wouldnt chastise either as they had little time and little options when they came on. As for the rest of them, extremely poor (is the most polite way i would describe it) fitness aside to be scared on the ball is a cardinal sin (thankfully they’re not always)

  8. Rosenborg were much better than I had judged them after watching some of the Dundalk game . We were fortunate not to concede but , with so many players failing to hit top form, 0-0 was not a terrible result.

Tom Rogic up front was not a success so I don`t expect we will try that one again but the fewer changes the better as I don`t expect so many players to be, if not exactly off form, below their normal level of performance.

Hope springs eternal but the unthinkable ( for me) could become reality.

    PS

Was the singing of so many rebel songs to make a point to The Board/UEFA about the ` sanitisation` of the game?

Overall, though, not a bad `performance` from the crowd in the absence of our Cheerleaders.

  9. Poor performance last night but I’m confident that we will progress.

It is also a good indicator for the board that we do indeed need quality additions to the squad.

Euro ties are seldom settled in the first leg any more. And Brendan is absolutely correct about 0-0 never being a bad result in Europe.

we go in to the next game knowing any goals we scored now have to be out scored by them. I think the weight of expectation may now be on Rosenberg who are a good spfl standard side. Our quality will tell.

But we need a better squad for the rest of the season.

  10. Clashcitybhoy on

I am reasonably confident that we will go through vs Rosenborg, but I think there are a few important lessons for our manager, who, I should add I am a huge fan of.

Overall, I don’t think we are properly prepared for this stage.

We have lost Toure, Roberts from the squad, plus Erik, Boyata, Griff and Moussa through injury. Whilst injuries cant be predicted, those incurred by the two strikers appear to be recurrences of previous, and are therefore unsurprising.

Offset all of this against new guys haven’t yet settled in and are not match fit.

Players also had very little break, and imho, some should have been pulled from international squads.

Our play at corners last night was poor, and in general since BR, except for Boyata, we don’t really have a threat at corners – remember when we beat Barca, Man U etc, it was corners and set pieces.

My final criticism is our pre-season schedule. Beating Shamrock & Linfield isn’t proper preparation for going away to Norway halfway through their season. We should have had a competitive game last Saturday to get players fitter.

In the final minutes last night we had throw ins well inside their half, and whilst I don’t want us turning into Stoke, if a long throw is what it takes in last 2 minutes, then do it.

So, my advice to BR is play your team for next week for first 65 vs Sunderland, practice set pieces, practice long throws, and practice penalties.

Finally, end the talk about Kolo Toure, we could have done with him last night, he has had his chance but now is time to say thanks and move on.

Was the singing of so many rebel songs to make a point to The Board/UEFA about the ` sanitisation` of the game?

    —–

If it was it didn’t work. I heard at least two rebel songs from the section above the closed section. The songs fizzled out quickly as nobody else seemed interested. Overall it was hard to gauge the atmosphere as there was literally nothing on the pitch to get excited about.

  12. theBHOYfromU.N.C.L.E on

Didn’t think the atmosphere was that bad, certainly not round about me.Always takes a goal to ramp it up in any game so given no GB and 0-0 is was not unusual.

    tomjonescsc

  13. traditionalist88 on

If you’re going to draw at home in a tie like this, you want a 0-0. Even if we rode our luck once or twice to get it.

Thought Brendan Rodgers took unusually long to change things when it was clear it wasnt working. The Hayes substitution took a lot longer than it should’ve.

To be fair though the glaring problem was up front and there was no obvious solution. Maybe Aitchison isn’t ready but theres really only one way to find out. He couldnt have done much worse than anyone else last night.

Movement was poor and wide players nothing to aim for. Forrest on numerous occasions cut inside and ran across their defensive line with the ball. With everyone else marked this was a dream for the Rosenborg defense.

Overall very laboured, passing and movement not up to scratch and no focal point.

Lessons learnt hopefully. They’ll be nervous now about losing goals and will feel they’ve missed an opportunity to make themselves clear favourites in the tie.

Yeah botched cut and paste job, it’s amazing the advertising junk you get on CQN these days.

    We normally disagree anyway :)

  16. A bit disappointed about last night.

Thought both the players and the crowd were a bit flat .

Understandable performance given personnel not available and earliness of the season.

    Confident we will go through

    HH

  17. Last night will have confirmed to the Plc number crunchers that putting Sevco first is the only realistic financial policy.

Hitting the ‘bonus’ jackpot for the Plc of the Champions League is a lottery, especially given the shambolic standard (and administration) of the domestic Scottish game.

Even if we qualify for the CL every year it will soon become clear that the additional revenue is really all about the Plc and keep up with rising costs. We are very much bit players and the allure of a dog fight for third place and Thursday night Europa League football is about the size of it.

With no bigot games the domestic Scottish game is a similar to the the League of Ireland.

Without the Hun and the uncertainty of European money the numbers don’t work and Sir Peter’s downsizing is back.

There is something about the atmosphere, BR’s tone, the fact that Rangers Media broke the SPFL NFA story and Sir Peter’s ongoing arrogance with the Celtic support that is unsettling.

That was evident on the pitch last night.

With Celtic’s apparent collusion with the cheats, the incompetent (at best) handling of the GB Section at the most important time of the season, the lack of a centre forward etc, it’s just a case of the same old story.

The takings in The Louden will have been good last night.

    On another note.

Here’ hoping that the much maligned Solicitor’s in Arbroath raise an action against Scottish football’s incompetent mandarins.

  18. Just having a look there at UEFA prize money, the losers next Wednesday will receive €420k and drop into a playoff for the Europa league. The winners will progress to the CL play off where even the losers in the play off receive €3m and drop automatically into the Europa league where the base group stage fee is €2.6m Where as the play off winner will receive €12.7m base fee for the group stages plus tickets sales and TV pool money. A minimum of €30m.

Getting through next Wednesday would secure 4 more home European matches and at least €5.6m in prize money.

In addition, if we fail to progress I suspect Armstrong will almost certainly be sold to recover some of the cost and any remote chance of Roberts coming back will be sunk.

  19. Cultsbhoy says Hail Hail to Hector and Brendan on

I don’t really see us being weaker than last season …yet. Roberts was great towards the end but he wasn’t the drive in last season’s team.

Perhaps an overestimation from everyone on how good the invincibles were….or more likely an underestimation of how poor Scottish football is? We played the champions of Norway.. A team with pretty much the same qualification record as us in Europe..

We also played in an injury weakened state with many giving sub standard performances.

Yes we rode our luck but Id imagine if the guys find their mojo next week and score then we are well on our way. If we scored twice I’d be very surprised if we conceded three..

Then we are in a position to start seriously strengthening striking options with the closer promise of CL experience.

    Keep the faith.

  20. Not sure where the confidence that we’ll win next week comes from. We were lucky to get a 0-0 last night, we have no strikers and our away record in Europe is abysmal. In the last four season, at this stage of qualifying, we have never won away from home (3 draws and 1 defeat).

We can get the result to qualify but it’s not certain we will. We’re not favourites to go through.

  21. We were disjointed last night which happens when key positions hit by injury.

We were lucky not to concede and any more injuries could see us having to qualify for the EL. Sometimes karma changes sides.

On the SPFL statement etc I’ve been wondering. The wee tax case has been airbrushed from history ( wishing now I’d bought it) but what if it were investigated on its own, not likely but hypothetically.

If it were to be looked at under what rules would it be examined or are SFA/SPFL telling us it would be same rules with same outcome or same rules different sanction and what?

    A transfer ban? Really?

So in effect if you dishonestly breach the rules in a way no one thought anyone would do, the football authorities are helpless. Is that what they are saying?

  22. Go tell the Spartim on

Remember when we used to be just a football team, the dreams we had………………………………..

Im with Clogher Celt, there is something sinister in the atmosphere at Celtic just now (he might not have said sinister but i am)

  23. What a difference June and July have made to our collective mood.

    Knee-jerkiness? Or our new reality?

I’d say wait until next Wednesday when we have heard Celtic’s statement and have learned our Euro fate before becoming too downbeat

  25. Go tell the Spartim on

Roberts would have made a difference last night, ergo weaker, we’re one centre half down, weaker, one left back down, weaker, not gonna mention lack of a striking option (thats never gonna change) but its all about opinions :-)

    ###

Everything the Board have said or done, or left unsaid and undone, in relation to the huns, is consistent with that analysis.

  27. I hope I am very wrong but I do not see where the confidence is coming from that we can score the goals we will need to go through in Norway, Griif has had this calf issue before but didn’t trouble him against England too much, Dembele is a definite out until September again a hamstring.

We played for most of the game in front of their defence, ok they were deep they will know one goal does them.

The team just look short of cohesion and pace is very down from last year, ok its early but we knew this was the schedule, BR will be tested to come up with the correct answers.

I do sincerely hope Celtic do get through but last night was a performance that I thought was not possible from a BR team at home.

  28. CLOGHER CELT on 27TH JULY 2017 10:44 AM:

I wish I could say I disagreed with any of that. But Go Tell The Spartim and yourself have picked up on something I really thought I was the only one who had … the sense that something is not quite right, a feeling in the air that something’s changed.

Dembele injured until after the transfer window shuts. It makes me wonder if he’s played his last game for us. Armstrong no closer to a new deal. Brendan watching as Izzy leaves, and trying to put a good face on it’ he’s too smart to believe that Hayes at left back or putting a Champions League pot of gold on the shoulders of young Ralston, should something happen to Kieran, is a good call … and no backup striker?

That’s just the stuff on the pitch.

Last night I read through the full transcripts of Doncaster and Topping’s media interview. They talked about how they had the lawyers in to discuss the statement released yesterday with the full board over the course of weeks. Weeks.

Read their answers when they are asked what Celtic’s stance on the new review was; “Celtic weren’t on the board.” But we knew it was coming, what the SPFL announcement would say, what the legal advice was … because Lawwell WAS on the board when the lawyer briefed everyone.

And his leaving the board could be interpreted, by some, as not wanting his fingerprints on a decision that had already been taken. I can’t help but think it curious that his seat is taken by a Sevco director. It’s murky at best and it doesn’t get less so when you realise the “masterplan” is to have fans – FANS – fund a judicial review. The club looks like it’s chucked it … if they were ever interested to begin with.

The Green Brigade thing … two sides, both wrong in how they’ve handled it, but Celtic’s heavy hand has done a lot more than remove a section which was getting us into trouble in Europe … it’s removed the one organisation capable of opposing them from the stands.

I don’t know. It could all be vapors, maybe this time next week the picture will be clearer.

But my enthusiasm for the coming campaign has been ebbing away all week. Today I just feel like a dead battery. Can’t muster any at all.

  29. Someone in the sports injuries dept is needing to take a good look and see whats happening with mousa , this lad is a big want in our team , and this injury is becoming a bit persistant with him , he is no good to us sitting in the stands . With regards to our striking position , does anyone else think its way off the mark that a team of celtics calibre ,entering what is the most financially rewarding competition ,do so with only two strikers . Make no mistake if we go out to the norwegian side , players will have to be sold , and we will have lost another huge financial advantage over our rivals , AND IT COULD HAPPEN . We at present are swamped with midfielders , four of whom were on the bench , the centre of defence is also a worry ,with boyata out for a while , god forbid anything happens to joso .

We swept the boards last season . We have lost one of our most cherished players in wee paddy , we have recruited oodles of midfielders .who god knows where they are going to fit into the team or when . I fear we haven’t progressed with the signings made thus far , and in true celtic style ,if we dont qualify for the CL we wont see anymore .

  30. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

    JIMTIM

Moussa missed about a third of last season, none of it tactical. Not good for a young lad.

  31. VFR800 is now a Monster 821 on

Well what a miserable board this morning.

We were stinking last night but created a few chances that were blocked in the box; Jamsie was unlucky with a shot across goal and Armstrong was unlucky with a shot that their keeper saved, so we could have scored a couple. So could they but didn’t.

It’s 0-0. They are half way through their season and are no better IMHO than Patrick Thistle. Organised maybe but certainly not a scintillating football team.

We had no focus up front; no-one to occupy their centre halfs (halves?) so they were able to sit deep and allow their full backs and defensive midfield players (5 of them) to crowd us out. No smart runners in the box to turn a centre half or look for a killer ball to be played through from our wide men or midfielders.

Bottom line is that with Griffiths back (he will be!) and with a different shape (i.e. a focal point up front) we will score. They will need to commit at some point and that will allow our crisp passing game and fast wide men to hurt them.

I saw nothing last night that leads me to believe that they are anywhere near as good a team as us and I still expect to go through next week.

Rogic, Sinclair and KT in particular won’t play as poorly again this season.

    An off night, nothing more.

    KTF

  32. On another point, Celtic have asked for a review the SPFL have said they would welcome a review, Topping said it would be not to punish, he suggested a truth commission along the lines of what happened in South Africa, they the SPFL also want to be involved in shaping the terms of reference of any review, guess they wont want anything looked at from a different viewpoint so all thats been done will not be revisited, this in my opinion cannot be allowed to happen, it would be no more than what we got under Nimmo Smith an orchestrated sham and cover up.

Be interesting if Celtic say anything this week if so it will around 5 pm tomorrow.

Personally I believe what RFC1872-2012 did was deliberate, it was to gain advantage on the field of play by signing players they could not otherwise afford, the hidden side letters confirm they knew it was against the rules of football and defrauded the exchequer. People in football Ogilvie to name but one knew this, however he has been allowed to continue on his merry way unsensored and now a UEFA observer, no doubt angling for a position within UEFA itself , what a mess the game is in here.
