Celtic: We don’t need no stinkin’ Rangers

235

I may have slightly embellished our chief exec with my headline but that’s about the measure of Peter Lawwell’s message this afternoon.  He told the BBC, “We don’t rely on any other club. We are in a decent position, we’re very strong.

“We have a stand-alone strategy, a stand-alone financial plan and a robustness hopefully that will take us through that.

“Times are pretty tough. I don’t think it’s appropriate for us to talk about any individual club, these things are hypothetical at the moment.

“I think we’ve a view, a very strong view on certain circumstances but we’ll only share that at the right time.”

He said, contemplating a plate of ice cream and jelly after lunch.  He really should order 60,000 small tubs of both for our last home game.

Thanks and congratulations to everyone who participated in the CQN Music Quiz in aid of the Vanessa Riddle Appeal on Saturday night.  The room was packed, not for the first time at a CQN Quiz, extra seats had to be commandeered from elsewhere, and a great night was had by all.

£492.53 was raised on the night on top of £800 from the purchase of online tickets and donations.  Special thanks to Frank O’Hagan – new album available here – who provided musical entertainment at the end of the quiz.  Thanks also to the Stornoway Celts, who provided prizes, as well as Celticrollercoaster and Tony Warrington, for selling badges and CQN Magazines respectively to aid funds.

The night would not have happened without the enormous preparation and work by Taggsybhoy, aided on the night by Mrs Taggsybhoy and young Joe – thank you.  This evening Taggsybhoy will put a signed Celtic top donated by Penfold onto eBay to bring the week’s efforts to a close.  I’ll let you know when it’s live.

“The Financial Contribution of the Celtic Support is Very Clear”

The financial contribution made to Scottish Professional Football by the Celtic support is there for everyone to see; on Saturday just over 50,000 spectators attended the match against Inverness at Celtic Park; the total number of spectators at the other 20 professional matches on Saturday was just over 46,000.

By the end of the season we will have played almost 30 domestic matches away from Celtic Park; including Ross County, Peterhead, and Inverness in cup matches; and hopefully four matches at the National Stadium.

If we take the average cost of a ticket to be £25; then that will be £750 spent in stadiums away from Celtic Park; not counting any other money spent on travelling; refreshments etc.

So in affect, we are spending somewhere in the region of twice as much money on away matches; as we are spending on home matches.

In March we have a run of four consecutive away matches; to Aberdeen, Dundee Utd, the League Cup Final against Kilmarnock at Hampden, and then Snake Mountain, before a home match against St Johnstone on March 31st.

Recently, trying to get a ticket for a Celtic away match; is like trying to get a copy of Rangers balance sheet from Craig Whyte; obviously winning matches and playing well creates more demand for tickets.

What do we ask for in return for our money? All we ever wanted was fair and honest treatment for our team and for our supporters from everyone concerned. We also ask that everyone else is treated fairly and honestly as well; and if clubs don’t act in a fair and honest manner; then they need to be dealt with appropriately.

Celtic have just posted their financial statement for the last six months; it shows a big drop in profit; but hey; that’s what you get when you pay your taxes; it also shows a 20% drop in club debts; again running the club in the proper manner while still improving on the field of play.

I was delighted hear Peter Lawwell state that we are a standalone club; we don’t need Rangers or anyone else to continue playing football; I just hope the rest of Scottish Football are taking notice.

If the case against any SPL club proves they have been operating illegally; and therefore cheating; then the appropriate action must be taken against that club; or clubs. I have read all the drivel coming from the Scottish Media about needing a strong Rangers; maybe they do; and are scared to lose their jobs if their favourite institution becomes extinct.

The message to the rest of Scottish Football is very clear; you all stood by and watched as we were being cheated on the field of play on almost a weekly basis; you better not stand by and the people who cheated us off the field of play get away with it.

The Celtic support over the last few years have faced up to many battles; in those battles we have stood alone; with no support from the rest of Scottish football; I believe that we must consider all options for dealing with issues in the future. Again I would remind everyone just how much we contribute to Scottish football.

Speirs classic last week on S S. “Someone at HMRC has got it in for Rangers”. Then later another classic ” I think Rangers are being treated unfairly”

  3. Absolutely delighted with PL today. Good efforts with interims and the statement re the huns is exactly what we needed. It leaves the SPL/SFA and MSM with a big problem. Spin it anyway you want Mr Doncaster / Mr Regan / Jabba, Keach or Hugo THE biggest club in Scotland says NO to NEWCO

Also want to say well done Neil Lennon and his backroom team and all the squad. Saturday was always going to be a battle and 3 points is 3 points and the pressure is back on the huns.

Finally ” Doing the huddle when rangers die ” is a particular favourite at present

Scouting duties? Hmm. I read the article in the Russian press saying that McGregor might be going to one of their clubs. Will have more time in the afternoon and will make translation.

It would be better if I know which weekend guys are there. I will definitely speak to my friend who lives near Wroclaw. He will tell me what are the places worth to see, restaurants worth to eat in.

If I know the weekend I can try to find the person who can get tickets for Śląsk game . They play the games on Euro2012 arena. It’s nice stadium. Guys could watch Jarosław Fojut.

Does anyone with any sanity believe professional directors run a buisness based on the financial security of there closest rivals??? If that were true we are as culpable as the huns and would deserve to sink with them.

As things stand we cannot afford to drop points frivelously. If we had a team skillfull enough to do well in Europe, would it do as well on the domestic front? How would we do against the cloggers who are allowed to kick us off the ball? Without Rangers a few extra points dropped here and there would amount to nothing and a European style team could still see us into the Champions League where they would hopefully shine.

Please note that a dog boiler is a member of the establishment who would rather the poor / the unemployed / the sick consumed the family pet than provide a decent level of support in their hour of need. They are individuals who blame everything on the current economic climate as they try to support the unsupportable.

Fair competition, level playing and same rules for all – yes.

Financial doping for the special club, cheating and different rules for the special club – no.

  16. The Celtic community needs to engage with all the other decent fans of all the other clubs in Scotland who have been the victims of the huns cheating scam

When/If the huns lose – it will be the biggest scandal ever in world football

The victims need to ensure that there is a full independent and transparent inquiry in to what has gone on at RFC and the SFA/SPL

Only when that has been concluded and punishment handed down – should there be any consideration of allowing a newco to even think about applying for a start in SFL 3

To my untrained eye such an inquiry would take several months – so there would be no chance of this happening before the start of next season

The MSM are forging ahead without great speed to tell us how much we need the huns – in sharp contrast with how slow they have been to even admit there was a problem with the BTC

I am a Lawwell sceptic (well documented)..

I’m not drawing any conclusions from what Lawwell says I will draw my conclusions from what Lawwell does.

So far things Lawwell has done that cloud my opinion:

Under invested at significant times over the last 4 years

Committed us to joint sponsorship with Huns – much against fans wishes

Appointed Tony Mowbray…then lucked out with Lenny

Taken significant wage increase and bonuses during a period of unacceptable Team failure

    Presided over declining attendance

Reduced turnover while promising to ‘expand the brand’

In fairness we have romped the balance sheet title race over this time and this season promises to be Stellar in terms of silverware but this is an ‘open goal’ season by any measure…

PL says more than his prayers but his actions don’t always match up..

BUT – at least he is saying the right things at this stage – which is as much as he can do..

  20. May I proffer a word of caution?

If the Board’s objective is to have a newco huns straight into the SPL but at the same time

alienate as few fans as possible the way to do is to talk tough but find that you are powerless to stop it happening.

I’m not saying that’s what’s happening, I’m just saying we should be alert to the possibility.

I think we need to go further.

We should be seeking assurances from UEFA that the national association and national premier league are indeed impartial bodies whose main concern first and foremost is fair competition.

And not self preservation and financial aspects.

And that anyone involved in these illegal practices no matter how meagre their input to it was in the past has to be removed immediately.

I envisage a period of time where UEFA actually run our game until the corrupt bodies have been sorted out to the satisfaction of an independent body.

The season might even be delayed until this matter is addressed

    Awe_Naw:

Traynor’s comments are brilliant in that the expose just how deluded he is.

See, what becomes clearer to me every single day is that the problem here is Craig Whyte. Without his input, Rangers would be in some kind of position to tackle these problems and move forward in light of an adverse verdict in the big tax case. Not a great position, but these numbers have been known about for months and no-one – not even me – was talking about an extinction event as likely.

Now I think the chances are 95/5 that, in event the tax bill crystalises at the upper end of the numbers, Rangers will cease to exist … at least in it’s present form, and I think it’s 50/50 as to whether any institution bearing that name will ever play football in Scotland’s top tier ever again.

    Whyte is the problem now.

The other night, I postulated a scenario where he does have a plan. A plan to amass a war chest for dealing with the HMRC debt if it does, in fact, materialise. I suggested that all the income has been set aside to pay that debt in one go. I don’t believe it myself, but I said maybe …

It was technically possible. But here’s the problem.

He is facing such a myriad series of problems right now that it’s doubtful he will be in ANY position to take Rangers forward, regardless, even if you accept the premise that he wants to. He is facing criminal investigations, perhaps even prosecution. He might well find himself in jail. The SFA look certain to be compelled to deny him a Fit & Proper Person license for next season, and this is not anything to do with the debt the club finds itself in.

Craig Whyte, purely and simply, has no long term future in Scottish football. I do not believe he ever wanted one, but that is now by-the-by. Events have over-taken him, and he is the subject of too many fights on too many fronts to survive it. He is being overwhelmed.

Traynor and his ilk are backing a dead horse. Oh yeah, that horse might be fit enough to take a position at the starting gate. It may even be in a position to run at least part of the race. But everyone watching is aware that it’s running on its last legs. There is deadly poison coursing through it’s system, and sooner or later – sooner I think – it’s going to drop dead.

I can see it. You can see it. We all can see it. To steal another Breaking Badism … “he’s okay like the fruit fly’s okay … we’re all on the clock, kid.” In other words, the sand in his egg timer is running out quick. I cannot believe that people like Traynor don’t get it.

There is as much chance of this guy still being Rangers chairman in 12 months as there is of Traynor winning a Pulitzer Prize for investigitive digging.
