Celtic’s Europe-UK transfer dilemma

296

If right back, Aurelio Buta, completes his proposed move from Royal Antwerp, added to Carl Starflet and Christopher Jullien, who will return later this year, we have the beginnings of a stable defensive structure.

Not that Aurelio would be of any immediate benefit, as travelling here from Belgium would require him to isolate until after the first legs of the third qualifying rounds of the Champions and Europa Leagues.  If we want a right back to play against PSV or Jablonec he has to already be in the UK.  This is a dilemma.

I have zero expectations we will reach the Champions League group stage.  PSV look too strong, with or without a new right back.  A win tomorrow night will secure at least Europa League group stage qualification.  Lose tomorrow, and overcoming Jablonec in the next round of the Europa becomes vitally important.  The latter outcome makes a UK-based signing more likely, the former points to Buta getting the nod.

Is he not already at the airport? From online posts his girlfriend is, though I can’t confirm any of this just what I’ve read elsewhere.

We’re nothing if not generally optimistic so let’s hope it’s the former. I don’t see us spending £3m on a right back if we make it to the next round or £4 or £5m on Baldock if we don’t. Urgohide or Welsh can play RB, so effectively we could have SW, CJ (reggie Perrin ) CS and a new taller LB

  4. Both Mrs Madra Rua and myself are full of Anti-bodies and Astra Zeneca. Consequently, we shall be watching tomorrow nights victory in The Celts Well, Santa Ponsa.

Still so remarkably downbeat Paulo. Packing ourselves over trips to Middjtyland and Jabolonec (SIGHS).

Seems – I say it seems – that with a wafer-thin squad, we’re waiting to see how far we’ll get in Europe before deciding on the calibre of players who might help get us farther in Europe… midsummer madness.

Hopefully the RB will have an Aura abot him and we’ll have the rest of the signings in for January’s Dubai trip ;)

If that’s true – or, more accurately, if that is how the decisions are arrived at (i.e., awaiting the outcome of an important qualifier BEFORE trying to improve the squad) – then we are in the same place we have been for years re: squad building – doing it back to front.

We should be building to win, not depending on winning to build.

With all the talk of ‘modernisation’ from the new CEO , I had this crazy notion that our extremely risk-averse philosophy was about to change . A new manager with the right footballing ideas and the personality to implement them was an exciting start but a rather depressing hush has fallen over project ‘new proactive Celtic’ since then .

Targeting various levels of signings for vital positions while we wait to see what happens sounds disturbingly familiar .

Hi TURKEYBHOY – any view on the Gabon attacker we are ‘linked’ with – he any good?

I saw comments the other day re: quality of Turkish football, but I think stones / glass houses comes to mind!

    Hi BG,

I did mention him last week, when the best Turkish sport outlet Fanatik, said that we had made an offer. He was dynamite here last season in a middling team.I think he plays like Moussa.Would be a fantastic signing at the price.

    But you know us.

Surely it only secures Europa Conference league (3rd tier competiton).

Seeing the sunnier side of the street you paint Paul, you say…

‘If we want a right back to play against PSV or Jablonec he has to already be in the UK…’

Given Ange said we do have multiple A picks for all key positions, it may be that we are also in negotiation with a Brit-based RB, which would be awesome. Existing signings are left-fielders, so we may get a nice surprise.

I’ll still love Celtic whoever we get in!

  17. I assume Starfelt and our new RB,were in a Bubble at their previous clubs, and have tested negative.

Just what is the difference to players coming from all over Europe to play in the Euros.Travelling between countries without having to isolate, and fans from abroad being able to attend games without isolation.

I honestly don’t think we should be basing purchases on what or if…..if we have identified Buta as what is needed TO WIN THE SPFL…that is who we should go for ….it is worth 30 million minimum…..or are we just saying the huns are too good this season ? .. our focus should totally be on winning the SPFL nothing else matters

  22. SCULLYBHOY on 27TH JULY 2021 12:42 PM

Watched the video on Buta, shows him as a right winger – not a tackle made. Wee bit worrying that.

  23. A certain calibre of player won’t come to Scotland unless we have guaranteed European football.

  24. Go tell the Spartim on

Surely we should sign the best player for each position we can afford, but no, we gamble perennially on getting thru a tie with what’s left of the squad then if and when we get put out we buy a cheaper version of who we’d like then wonder how, the next time round in July that we’re still unprepared.

Couldn’t make this up, if that’s what the plan is

  25. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

We can’t be deciding on buying a player on the basis of one game! Have we learned nothing about short-termism?

Hope we are not pinning too much on Jullien coming back. Surely we can do a lot better than this guy?

  26. We are, as I alluded to in a previous thread, shopping in the £3m/£4m price range – nothing inherently wrong with that as due to the Covid effect on the market we may be getting better value.

So perhaps we will purchase five, or, six and top things up with three, or, four, loans in August – would not be in the least surprised to see Elyounoussi back again.

I see reports that Christie might be thinking of staying – I would be happy about that – he is a good fit for the Scottish game. I was sure he was intent in running down his contract – I still think this is the case.

So let’s say ten coming in, a mixture of buys and loans – Christie stays till the end of the year – who have we got here already to make up the squad?

Barkas, Bain, Ralston, Taylor, Welsh, Jullien, Bitton, Soro, Turnbull, McGregor, Shaw, Urhoghide, Montgomery, Forrest, Rogic & Dembele.

That’s twenty seven with the likes of Robertson, Murray, O”Connell & O’Connor on the fringe.

That squad should be good enough to secure the title runners-up spot and close the points gap to a more respectable level.

I discount Bolingoli, Ntcham, Griffiths, Ajeti & Johnston – perhaps they can be sold, or, loaned out, to finance the incoming loans.

That’s my take for what it’s worth. A year without European football, which usually only lasts until Christmas anyway, will not be the end of the world, it may even take the pressure off Ange and the new squad, with a reduced number of games and a tighter focus.

  27. GLASSTWOTHIRDSFULL on 27TH JULY 2021 1:30 PM

I do not understand the dislike of Julien by some celtic fans. A big game player – motm performances against sevco and in Europe – plus a natural and experienced leader which is especially crucial with the amount of young players we have.

Then again a lot of fans don’t like james forrest. Who is brilliant.
