With a little over two weeks until the league campaign is underway and, more importantly, five weeks until Champions League qualification starts, Celtic’s three games in France in the coming week take on an importance beyond results.
Many of the teams we could face in the early qualification rounds have been back playing football for a month and will be at peak fitness for the European qualifiers. Celtic normally face this fitness deficit in the qualifiers only against Scandinavian opposition but there is a high probability we will face teams five weeks ahead of Celtic in match fitness.
This autumn, European football will split into the haves and the have nots. Celtic could be a team in the Champions League, picking up talent at a price not seen for a decade, or we could lose more money than at any time in our history. Champions League qualification is up there alongside winning the league as the most important objective for the club, even this season, when 10 is on the horizon.

On the plus side Paul our players have had a proper closed season rest so they should be raring to go.
Think the fitness plan is sound enough.
3 games in five days against Ligue 1 (uh-n) will involve lots of running.
Then home for a week, then Accies, then more games.
Hopefully the silver lining to the Covid-19 cloud will be the extended rest given to fatigued players who’ve produced the goods incessantly over four years.

To suggest winning 10 in a row is as important (“up there alongside”) as this season’s qualification of Champions League group stages in absolute nonsense in the eyes of any fan. In might be as important to those who count the money but not to supporters of what happens on the park.
Give up a once in a lifetime experience for a a Few Dollars More? No. The mere suggestion is what is wrong with football. I remember MON with Aston Villa sacrificed the opportunity to win Uefa Cup to attempt to qualify for Champions League with Team selections focused on finishing top four in EPL. Sacrificing success on the field for cash in hand was wrong then and it’s wrong now.

Man Utd were into the latter stages of Champions League late 90’s.
In a radio interview Gary Neville was asked if winning the Champions League was more important than the League campaign.
” Finishing in the top 4 in the league league is more important , because it gets you into the Champions League”
I think there was a few seconds of ‘dead air’, as the interviewer contemplated asking Gary if he wanted to think his answer over and have another try.

A wee update on SOUTH OF TUNIS.
Because of the concerns ‘voiced’ on the blog about SOT’s lack of activity, Paul attempted to contact him using his original email address. That bounced back, unfortunately. Paul then made further enquiries and was able to get another contact email SOT was using, but this time, though the email wasn’t bounced back, there has been no answer from SOT at all, though the email was forwarded about two weeks ago now.
Worrying situation. Hope this information is helpful.

But qualification for the CL, allows us to give players like Forrest, McGregor and Christie better contracts.
