So are we surprised at last nights’ defeat? There’s some surprise that we scored three goals away from home, which if we count Moscow, is becoming a habit, if an incredibly lax one, but I’m less surprised we shipped four, again. Even at full strength, we are several players short of being able to play Ronny Deila’s high-energy pressing game, so when the squad is further depleted by rest, injury and the like, we cannot expect to play an expansive game and come away with a result.
Fortunately the outcome didn’t matter, but it will next time out in this competition. I’m very supportive of Ronny and think we have not even begun to see the real benefits of his work, but he got it wrong when he opened up a game which did matter in Warsaw. We’ll need to see if he decides to play this way, with many of these players, in the Round of 32. For then we either need to add appropriate players or change tactics.
There’s been a bit of chat on how attendance figures are reported. Football clubs report paid seat sales, which baselines attendance at season ticket sales, but the ‘bums on seats’ figure is usually far lower.
The showbiz side of the game will always want to report the higher figure: see – our fans are faithful through and through, and all that. Only Manchester United and Arsenal report higher average league attendance figures than Celtic in British football. This claim maybe reliant on ticket sales, but it is an important indicator of the size, and therefore potential of our club in the right environment. Not to mention the efforts many thousands go to in order to financially support the club, in sunshine or in shadow.
It was still somewhat refreshing to hear the new newco director inform the media that his club attracted less than 16,000 people for a recent home game. The cynic would point out that if newco fall into insolvency, the excuses are already established – fans are not as loyal as they claim, blame then, not their unfortunate execs.
Many thanks for all the feedback on the 2015 CQN Annual. You can order yours here, or get a special Annual-DVD bundle here.
As a special offer, everyone who buys an Annual, or bundle, before Christmas will be entered into a prize draw for a VIP Meal of 4 at a Celtic Park restaurant on a match day. One entry for each Annual bought; pile in.
Our friends Magners, who I increasingly think get what this club is all about, have offered us another pair of Premium Tickets for the Jock Stein Stand on Sunday. It’s a great way to watch football, especially on a winter’s day. To enter the competition, email me celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the team Celtic play on Sunday in the subject line of your message. Competition closes at 22:00 tonight, winners will be informed by email tomorrow, so check your inbox!
The deal I have with Magners is that when we make this offer, we ask you to consider making a £1 (or more) donation to our Mary’s Meals Appeal. We are working towards building a kitchen at Chibwata Priimary School in Dowa, Malawi, which has 909 pupils and does not have food preparation facilities.
With a kitchen – and Mary’s Meals providing food – they will be able to provide primary school kids with what is often their only square meal of the day. This work cuts infant mortality, improves school attendance by an average of 30%, and increases life chances exponentially.
No matter what you do today, this £1 will do things you cannot imagine. It will make your day worthwhile.
I’ll be out with my boys on the bucket collection for the Foundation before kick off on Sunday. If I’ve not coaxed your last £1 out of you, bring another one along to the game. The spirit of Celtic needs to take care of those in our own community, as well as in one of the world’s poorest countries.
Sorry for all the calls to action todaym in summary:
The Annual, with a VIP Meal for 4 competition.
The Magners’ competition, email celticquicknews@gmail.com
The Mary’s Meals £1.
See you at the bucket collection on Sunday!

Fair made me chuckle….
AUTHOR Stephen Murray spent two years of his spare time working on ‘Ten Men Won The League’ with the help of recollections from players on both teams and from supporters who were there to witness the match.
“Celtic were struggling until Christmas and what saved them was a really bad winter. There was no undersoil heating then, so for 10 Saturdays in a row, Celtic didn’t have a game. The players describe it as having another pre-season and when they got back into it, they were playing game after game, winning, and building up momentum.
“During that terrible winter, manager Billy McNeill took the team to Portugal to train in warm weather and they played a game against Estoril. That’s where they stayed in 1967 and the club took the players to the Estadio Nacional, where the European Cup was won. That was the first time many of them had been there and they admitted they were hugely inspired by the experience. That’s when they realised the magnitude of being a Celtic player.
“They all said they went out to Portugal as a bunch of individuals – a lot of them were in their first season – and they came back a team.”

We try to avoid commenting on ‘the rangers’… but
The Celtic Network are delighted to observe the humiliation of ‘The Rangers’ past, present and undoubtedly for many more months. Like police Scotland the SMSM and football authorities have worked their arses off to convince us that fantasy is reality.
This calamity was always going to happen for the simple fact that if you tell the truth, it will win in the end. What we are seeing now is the collapse of 3 years of lies and the vindication of every Scottish football fan shouting ‘you’re having a laugh’.
Now to the serious bit. Our game has been devalued by a fantasy created by the media and the football administrators. They told us that our game would die without ‘Rangers’. Here’s the truth. That entity has offered nothing but shame and embarrassment to our game. The authors of the infamous ‘Five Way Agreement’ should now resign. A fair amount of small clubs have benefitted from Sevco playing in the lower leagues but overall Scottish football has been damaged by flogging a dead horse.
We are genuinely looking at a club who can’t guarantee that they can fulfil their obligation to play in every game till the end of this season. The SFA have an obligation to every other club to decide whether one bankrupt club can continue to drag the rest into further humiliation.

IT’sTIME TO CUT THEM LOOSE….!!!!
Hard to believe this diatribe :
“There were options on the bench that would have allowed the manager to drop Mohsni, move Darren McGregor to centre-back where he is more comfortable, and Richard Foster to right-back. Dean Shiels did not need to be used on the flank when he is at his best playing off the main striker.
The result was that Rangers’ fragilities at the back were clear, and Queens took full advantage.”
The above was written as part of what was supposed to be a match report, by some mug on the BBC Sport website.
Richard Wilson is the comedian whom penned that tripe.
It’s as if he was trying to coach the zombie entity.

Very cold in Lanarkshire, minus 3 at the moment. Stating the obvious? Yes, let me also state the obvious regarding the comedy show last night.
There is no way back for this version of The Hun: that will mean only one thing, league reconstruction to save Scottish football. The rags will go into meltdown for a few days, deflection and diversionary tactics will be front and centre of the movement. In the meantime the suits at Hampden will be working out another 5 way agreement, let’s call it “the way forward”. It will be a mongrelised parchment containing some Barry Hearn , Graham Spiers, Henry McLeish ,SkySports and anyone else who has said anything to support the OF myth.
It shall be done, because they have to be saved. That is what the suits want , what the media want and to hell with integrity or competition.
It’s like WWE with a ball in the middle…..pathetic really.
We’ll have a good laugh Bobby M, tripe or no tripe!!
Is the previous article the place to post the racing selection chief?

hoopdoggydog,
It’s a chilly 23 degrees down here in the Wild West of Oz and there’s a wee bit of a breeze blowing but I’m sure I’ll cope.
16 roads,
I read Wilson’s piece early this morning, incredible, more like a fanzine article than something on the website of the national broadcaster. If I’m honest, I am no longer really that interested in what happens with the travelling circus suffice to say that if this was happening to our club, there would be no shortage of journalists, opponents and various other assorted hangers-on standing by waiting to put the boot in to us. I don’t forget the pain we endured in 1994.
AR
Top of the morning to you all from a still-dark and freezing Fife.
Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined such a comedy as the one running at the Ibrox theatre.
I predict it will have a longer run than Agatha Chritie’s play The Mousetrap did in the West End.
The only worry I have is that the powers that be (with a little help from Celtic) will come up with a new version of the 5-Way agreement. I think that Gordon Strachan of the SFA was trailing this idea with his “some kind of accommodation for Rangers” comments.
COYBIG
AR – I know what you mean mate, very little interest in that charade either.
Can’t remember reading anything so pathetic though – he was supposed to be writing a report on the match, not provided his opinion on where they went wrong and what they should and shouldn’t have done in order to prevail.
They really are beyond the Pale.

They said the Championship would be the league to watch this season, they weren’t wrong. Comedy gold every week from the three stooges of football management.
Getting to the end of year/mid season review stage, so here’s my tuppence worth-
if I were RD, I would punt the following players-
Matthews
Efe
Kayal
Mulgrew
Stokes (£2m)
Forrest (anything £5m up)
Boerrigter
Pukki
I would loan out:
McGregor
I would return to sender:
Tonev
Wakaso
I’d try to keep:
Guidetti
Denayer
I think Celtic should keep KC and try to persuade VVD to stay (albeit that is doubtful in the extreme).
I would persevere with Scepovic and seek to utilise Fisher and Henderson more.
We need a centre back and wingers together with a striker if JG leaves.
I would investigate the availability of Jon Walters, Jonas Olsson and James McClean and Ciftci at DU.
I would seek loan deals for Aaron Lennon, Paddy McNair and kenwyn Jones.
justsayin…..
That boy McCoist certainly knows how to develop a player. He has transformed mid table premier league players into mid table Championship players in less than 2 years. I hope big Mick recognises this talent.
@LawTop20: Old Trafford tomorrow. Celtic Park next week.
JMCCORMICK
I’m rapidly coming round to the opinion that they are FUBAR’d for the mid-term at least.
The last few years have proven what we all pretty much knew. That Rangers are an unsustainable entity in any recognisable form.
Murray’s time in charge proved it,but he covered it via the bank. Whyte proved it but covered it by withholding tax dues. Green covered it,milked it,left a company on its uppers,wi zero assets and a £million a month deficit. Which proved the point again.
There may well be money to be made from a successful Rangers. But it will take a huge amount of money down the tubes-not entirely feasible in these FFP days-before that happens.
A Rangers may exist in some form or other, limping along sadly, but we all know the huns don’t turn out for poor teams. It stretches their loyalty.
No success=no support=no income=no investment=no success.
Anyone else outraged that there is no statue of Craig White on the Celtic Way yet.

Good points…well made….
My friends in Celtic,
In the midst of the continuing but tedious implosion of a team that at this moment in time plays over at Ibrox; it is maybe a prudent and opportune time to evaluate our own house.
For many ( Rightly or wrongly ) we will never accept any more manipulation to “realign” Scottish football.
Again Paul 67’s article refers to the “playing potential of our club in the right environment” and the fact that even now only Arsenal and Manchester Utd have higher average league attendances than ourselves.
I have a reoccurring open question which seems more pertinent on a daily basis. “Just what is our clubs thinking and actions ( If any ) about playing in an environment more befitting of our potential and perceived status.” The future for the status quo option is becoming increasingly unpalatable.
No matter the eventual outcome at Greyskull the future for Scottish football seems to be continual downsizing and more and more cuts. Ultimately this will hamper and stifle our European aspirations.
We must hammer, and keep hammering, not tap the corridors of change.
