Century of Vanity hid truth

1937

It’s not like we didn’t warn them.  Charles Green, with his ‘blame it on bigotry’ and ‘Rangersitis’ nonsense was an even more transparent charlatan than wee Craig Whyte.  Green moved in, fed them the nonsense they were oh so willing to swallow, and made off with their millions.  All carried out in broad daylight.

The financial realities were self-evident from day one of Newco’s existence.  For a while you had to wonder if any of vast number of fans, journalists and fan-journalists with computers had a spreadsheet between them.  But, a more powerful force than Rangersitis had taken hold – vanity.  The kind of vanity only those afflicted by a notion of supremacy are susceptible to.

Their club was liquidated, a newco was formed.  It adopted Rangers’ name while the original club was still an SFA member (and granting permission for their players to turn out for was for the time known as ‘Sevco Scotland’.

Put yourself in their shoes for a moment.  This isn’t an easy pill to swallow.  Around these parts people invest the kind of sentiment in their football team which goes into nationalism elsewhere, occasionally causing wars.  It’s a primitive but natural part of all of us, so perhaps we should have been more respectful of the feelings of others at the time.  Cough.

If someone was able to chart the world’s Cognitive Dissonance harvest it would have been off the chart for the last two years, brought about when a degrading reality met a supremacists vanity.  The subsequent scarcity of Armageddon (biff), Celtic’s flourishing Champions League action (bang), the new New Firm (whallop) were all late blows which none of the Jokers at Ibrox anticipated.  Even Kilmarnock managed to sort themselves out without collapsing into administration.

Without the ability to accept credit or debit cards, or with the bank’s authority to allow fans to automatically renew season tickets, the signs are written as tall as Ibrox’ Club Deck.  I can’t see more than a few thousand being prepared to throw their money into a landfill site.

Season ticket renewal deadline has been moved to a week before when next month’s wages are due.  Right now the directors have a reasonable aspiration that tens of thousands of fans will renew but on 17 May, the day after the deadline, reality should crystallise.  If there was a spread bet available, I’d put my money on administration in the days to follow.

Money talks, it don’t sing and dance and it don’t do walking away….

If Shetland want to leave Scotland after a YES vote that is their entitlement but from the Shetlanders I know they are unsure and the floated idea of Shetland staying as part of the UK instead of Scotland as far as I was informed went down like a lead balloon.

Under the current arrangements they are Scottish and that is that until such times as that changes. If that is what they want on they go.

    ==

I lived in Shetland for many years and never once remember a Shetlander refer to himself as a Scot or a being Scottish. I still visit the Islands of a regular basis to holiday and visit close friends there. None are overly keen on an independent Scotland and would rather things remain as they are. Does this reflect the view of the entire population of the Islands, no it doesn’t but given their chosen professions I would say their views probably represent as fair a cross section of Shetland society as is possible to find. As far as independence for Shetland it is just a reflection on what ‘a few ‘ would prefer rather than what is being offered in September. Also your assertion that post ‘independAnce’ any region in Scotland would be allowed the same privilege those living in Scotland will have in Sept if they so desired is absolute rubbish. If this were Shetland would a Scottish government allow the solitary hen that lays their only source of golden eggs to leave? We all know the answer to that.

As for the oil. I work for one of the major and they are in the process of divesting themselves of all North sea assets and relocating operations for the few remaining NS assets to one of their operational bases in continental Europe. Employees in Scotland have been informed of the their plans.

The North Sea region is too expensive to produce oil, too much financial outlay for too little profit for the majors . I have stated this before they KNOW where all the major reserves are likely to be, yes there is oil off the West of Scotland and West of Shetland (potentially large reserves) There is also oil to be found off the West of Ireland however none of it is economically viable to exploit. FACT is North sea production has declined over 30% in the last few years with no signs of recovering. New fields coming on line (very few) will only slow the decline. Industry analysts predict the price of oil will continue to fall until 2018 (as far as their study went) The NS oil industry requires major investment in order replace aging infrastructure and facilities. Who is going to pay for this? Not the oil companies, that is without huge tax concessions being made. It is much cheaper to close in wells and shut down pipe lines rather than replace the aging infrastructure. There are much bigger more economically viable overseas resources interesting the Oil industries major players. However the oil industry will exist in Scotland for many years with small independent operators taking over older assets and developing new fields but the steady decline of production output (and resultant income from tax revenue) will not be arrested.

As the head of OPEC succinctly phrased it recently” to base the economy of a country on a dwindling resource doesn’t make sense”

    Awe naw,

    Maybe you are right.

Maybe my standards have dropped. To be honest, the cheating of the Huns has lessened my love of the game in general in Scotland.

The heartbreak I went through, like most on here, when we lost out to them and subsequently found out what they were up to was sickening.

My love for Celtic will never die,but my intensity for the game is waning.

My admiration to those who attend regularly is astonishing.

Not when its not televised and those attending the game can’t even be arsed with updates in CQN cos the leagues wrapped up and the biggest political decision is about to be made in the country for hundreds of years. I think you expect too much.

I thought today’s pre match display was excellent.

Me too. I do honestly admire them. I can’t take it anymore. Maybe its time to embrace better principles as a club. Homegrown players, less success, become a community club rather than an irritating corporate toy thats lost its appeal.

Looks like I was not alone in that Fulham let me down, (though not as much as they let their fans down) over the weekend. Likewise Celtic hitting Inverness for six, when I only had them down for five! Poor show all round. Most on here recognised that Lee Griffith could play a bit, but most also had misgivings about his off the field (and am not sure if that has been recognised yet as a medical condition) psyche, and most have been correct on both counts. That said he has definitely quickly (gr) found his feet on the field and helped bring a good end to the season for Anthony Stokes. Lee brings something different to the way we play, and it will be interesting if that shows in the qualifiers, and beyond that, over a full season.

The Republic of Fife is new to me as is Kathleen Jamie. I am no intellectual [says he statin the bleedin obvious] but like that sort of stuff. William Hershaw is my man, he of “Cowdenbeath Man” fame.

As a matter of fact I was in Cowdenbeath this morning up at the War Memorial that overlooks the High St. I wondered if Peter Johnstone’s name was on the memorial there as he was born there, but it wasn’t.

I then went to Glencraig where he lived and worked in the mines but their Monument [shared with Lochore’s] dosen’t have any individual names on it.

I later spoke to the Glencraig local historian who is 94 but as sharp as a tack and he remembers the family in Glencraig where Peter met and married the publican’s daughter.

Celtic dawn, I only found out about the proposed remembrance garden for Peter after speaking to Arthur Nevay of Glencraig Lost Village website and Mike Payne of Benarty Heritage Preservation Group.

Good for them and no doubt there will be a lot of support from Celtic sites once it gets in full swing.

I was struck by how many of those who keep Johnny Thomson’s name alive are not Celtic supporters.

    Spot on mate.

  21. Exiled, evening,

Just highlighting the hypocrisy. He is a decent player but one who has had connections with dubious individuals. Just like the rest of us, his morals would appear to not be perfect either. PC brigade said nothing.

  22. On Leigh Griffiths. Yes, there is a lot he has to learn about when do and when to say things. And yes there is nothing wrong with GB displaying a banner to help Leigh along that road.

Some of us, me included had reservations about signing him due to his off field, what I will call activities as I cannot think of another way of putting it. However, I said when I heard we were interested in signing him that he would score a barrow load of goals. Neil Lennon wanted him and thought and probably still thinks he can harness him. Anthony Stokes has been there with Neil and seems to have come through it.

Now I am not one to compare Leigh’s footballing ability including his goal scoring capabilities. Why, because two reasons, two different types of Players and Leigh has only just joined us. Would I be correct in saying Frank also had off field problems, to me both Frank and Leigh do there talking on the Field.

I say let them without sin cast the first stone. I say trust in Neil and CFC to teach Leigh how to behave off the Field. I say let the GB display a banner or any other fan do so as long as it does not vilify (copyright hamiltontim) Leigh in public. We need to support our Player on the Pitch, leave the vilification to the MSM.

And finally…make no mistake Leigh Griffiths knows right now what is expected of him on and off the Pitch and how close he is to being booted out. Get behind the Player, cheer him on and celebrate his goals with him.

    Keep the Faith!

  24. Once again we have fans on here talking about LG.I wish the same fans would shut the f— up and wait until the guy has had his day in court.Innocent until proven guilty. Is that too hard to understand. If singing”The Hearts are going down”is any kind of offence, then we can shut up shop now.

The accusations that he sang a racist song, are totally unfounded on the evidence produced.A bigger worry is that Police Scotland have seemed to start a witch hunt against one person, who it would be virtually impossible to say with any measure of certainty, sang this song, yet the other songsters, quite plainly singing it ,as far as we know, have had no charges brought against them.

The banners today were a disgrace.Totally premature.Daily Record driven. If charged and found guilty, that would be the time to show disapproval. Not today. All the so called fans have done is jump the gun,and take the headlines away from the hun.

We seem to be experts at this.
