Champions League pitfalls

717

Having the first leg of our Champions League qualifier against KR in Iceland instead of Scotland, as initially drawn, ticks boxes for both clubs.  Without being disrespectful (well, maybe a bit), if the first leg was in Scotland KR could find themselves trying to sell a dead rubber second leg to TV companies.  With their home tie starting level, this could be their biggest windfall of the season.

Despite KR’s lowly coefficient, Celtic are stepping into the unknown and would infinitely prefer the second leg at home, a week after competitive cobwebs are blown away.  If we encounter a Karagandy-goat-sacrifice-type experience in Reykjavik, we would still have the chance to resolve things at Celtic Park Murrayfield.  The only surprise is that it took the clubs this long to confirm the change.

Now all we need to worry about is the goat-sacrificing habits of Scotland’s rugby types.

News from Nyon that Celtic’s share of last season’s Champions League bounty was £14.1m, plus £1.8m for participating in the qualifying rounds, on top of ticket sales, reiterates how important the competition is to the club.

We’re now trying to qualify for the third consecutive season, a feat we’ve never achieved before.  After the chastening experiences of last August, and the changing of the guard, I’m taking nothing for granted this season.  By my reckoning we cope without reaching the group stage two years in five without significantly downsizing.

I got a bit of banter for saying I was still raw from Georgios Samaras penalty miss four seasons ago.  Why shouldn’t we be raw, it was the last time Celtic failed to win a Scottish championship.  Ever!  Those who celebrate that miss will be clinging onto it as a highlight for the rest of their days.

  1. Michael Bradley is mocked on a few of the US sites I frequent, he’s one of those players that the fans hate but the manager always plays, perfect for the boo boys :o) He’s not rated at all.

No need to worry about Izzy losing it. He had a fractious relationship with his Honduras coach, who has now resigned. The coach subbed him half way through the Ecuador game. Honduras were just as bad with or without Izzy, who was replaced by Wigan’s left back.

We do need cover at left back but Izzy finished the last 10 games of the season in good form and is far from finished with the first team. With a break, he should be back to help us out in the next round of qualifications.

Thankfully it’s not just a few sheriffs it’s most of them …when they are confronted with spurious prosecutions in terms of the OB Act

Anyone convicted …would have been convicted in terms of the existing legislation.

At the risk of setting off a different argument – I would say that up until the Iraq disaster – that Blair might, repeat might have been a possible candidate but obviously that is totally out of the question today

Sadly all the politicians in the Republic and Westminster are far from being even considered in the same sentence as NM !

  12. Unbelievable to see Man Utd pay £30m for Luke Shaw, nowhere near that value in my opinion, suppose Southampton are happy they are receiving half a million for every game he has played for them,or 10 million for every England cap

  13. Not much (if any) reporting by Scottish MSM about how much Celtic earned for their CL endevours last season.

Not to mention that the Celts’ efforts actually put £1,500,000 into the SPFL coffers to be distributed among all the clubs.

Does that make Celtic the League’s biggest sponsors, Mr Doncaster?

In any case, all that is worth a scribble or two from our sports journalists, n’est-ce pas?

Mulholland has been bought and sold

The lack of independence in the offices of the Lord Adv and Sol Gen allows such appalling legislation as the OB Act to be put in place

The current incumbents are career prosecutors with limited ( if any) additional legal experience …..who are beholden to Eck &Co for their job …no surprise that Mulholland comes onto the TV and disingenuously proclaims the success of the OB Act

  16. Capt Beefheart@20.24

Why would St Stivs, in the interests of impartiality of course, report on all of the murders carried out byRepublicans when all of the State broadcasters and the “Independent” media constantly remind us, ad nauseam, of the vile deeds that Republicans carried out.

They are less forthcoming about murders carried out by the agencies of the state both of their own volition and in collusion with Loyalist murder gangs. Indeed after an admission on Panorama that undercover soldiers carried out a litany of murders of Nationalist civilians( the MRF) the PSNI decided that they were not going to pursue the perpetrators???

May I commend to you a book written by Anne Cadwallader “Lethal Allies:British Collusion in Ireland”.

This is to ensure that the next time that your sensitivities are offended at least you may have some insight into why people feel the way that they do with regard to the Irish question ( particularly those that feel they do not have a voice and that the MSM have an agenda with regard to Ireland which is distinctly at odds with their experience and perception of it).

The Ballymurphy Massacre was on a similar scale to the Bloody Sunday slaughter. The main difference was that the events in Derry were covered by the world’s media to some extent whereas this in Belfast weren’t.

Anne Cadwallader “Lethal Allies:British Collusion in Ireland”.

Read it. Depressing and enraging in equal measure. Complete Groundhog Day. As though almost every story reads the same. Especially the sections that cover the cursory ‘investigations’ performed by the state.

    Incredible.
