Champions League pitfalls

717

Having the first leg of our Champions League qualifier against KR in Iceland instead of Scotland, as initially drawn, ticks boxes for both clubs.  Without being disrespectful (well, maybe a bit), if the first leg was in Scotland KR could find themselves trying to sell a dead rubber second leg to TV companies.  With their home tie starting level, this could be their biggest windfall of the season.

Despite KR’s lowly coefficient, Celtic are stepping into the unknown and would infinitely prefer the second leg at home, a week after competitive cobwebs are blown away.  If we encounter a Karagandy-goat-sacrifice-type experience in Reykjavik, we would still have the chance to resolve things at Celtic Park Murrayfield.  The only surprise is that it took the clubs this long to confirm the change.

Now all we need to worry about is the goat-sacrificing habits of Scotland’s rugby types.

News from Nyon that Celtic’s share of last season’s Champions League bounty was £14.1m, plus £1.8m for participating in the qualifying rounds, on top of ticket sales, reiterates how important the competition is to the club.

We’re now trying to qualify for the third consecutive season, a feat we’ve never achieved before.  After the chastening experiences of last August, and the changing of the guard, I’m taking nothing for granted this season.  By my reckoning we cope without reaching the group stage two years in five without significantly downsizing.

I got a bit of banter for saying I was still raw from Georgios Samaras penalty miss four seasons ago.  Why shouldn’t we be raw, it was the last time Celtic failed to win a Scottish championship.  Ever!  Those who celebrate that miss will be clinging onto it as a highlight for the rest of their days.

I saw that Labour put up some disinterested and poorly briefed MP who couldnt put a coherent argument together against the OBA at last weeks Scottish politics show. With now 5 convictions from around 50 cases reaching trial the act is seen for the shambles we knew it was and is likely to result in a harassment case being raised against the police.

We now have an act where the polis define what is illegal- basing this on what their political masters, currently the SNP, want. This in turn seems predicated, according to the SNP on “evening up” the arrest figures and they reward the polis compliance in this through funding to increase their powers. We even had their pet lawman stating on TV that the only political stance that is illegal to demonstrate in Scotland is Irish republicanism. We Tims seem happy to take this discrimination.

  3. Apparently the Greek FA or some Greek fans want top pay for wee Jay to go out to Brazil for the Costa Rica game so that Sammy can take him on to the field with him.

That’s amazing if it happens. What a guy Samaras is!

  4. Just watched the Sammi video.

Biggest gift these ghuys have isn’t to score goals and wins medals. It’s to sprinkle a wee touch of magic wherever they go.

Class Sammi. You’re some Bhoy & a always will be.

  5. Spartak Moscow, Russia team, both have same old brothel at the back. If they want real improvement they need to change the staff, not the towels.

Had a wee browse through the Neilly mochan photos from celtic wiki.

Was amazed to see a picture of the celtic dug out from a game at Aberdeen from big Billy’s first spell as manager where bob Rooney (I think) is sitting in the dug out with a fag in his mouth and what looks like a box of swan vestas in his hand. Wonder what the sports scientists would have to say about that.

Great news about your mother. These novena thingies work lol KTF.

Jamesgang/ Fanadpatriot an excellent read, very well researched and corroborated by the RUCs own files as uncovered by the Historical inquiries team.

HT the Ballymurphy massacre is deserving of a public inquiry on its own merits. A number of reasons why this has not happened, the cost ,according to David Cameron ( which kind of proves that there is a price put on truth and Justice) and obviously what an inquiry would uncover ie some of the Paras who were involved in Ballymurphy went on to become involved in Bloody Sunday. There is no doubt that both were an attempt to terrorise and intimidate those within the Nationalist community who were protesting against the ” latest” injustice which at that time was internment without trial.

Completely agree especially the concern in government there is over what an inquiry will unearth.

Wow – I hadnt seen or heard of that before, havent been on internet today yet so havent caught up – had seen a headline very briefly earlier on about them wanting little jay in Brazil with them and had tried to watch a video clip of the wee man celebrating Samaras’ penalty but it wouldnt work then I had to dash.

Thats cheered me up no end.

Samaras the man there is no question is up there with the greatest of sporting personalities.

I just wish Samaras the footballer was a tenth as close!

  14. Me and the missus went to Iceland, based in Reykjavic, for a week back in April. Beautiful place, very clean but loads of graffiti.

Take money, loads of it. It’s not cheap at all.

Anyone travelling for the game will have a good time, and be welcome in a safe city. They are proud of the fact that if you are drop your wallet one night, go back to where it fell the next day and it’ll still be lying there, (as) full (or otherwise as you left it) and intact.

Have to say I feel really proud for Celtic to have been associated with Sammy.

You can’t buy that PR which is absolutely what Celtic are all about.

As for wee Jay, well he’s just a wee star. Pure magic wee Bhoy.

Who said football is just for brutes eh!?

  18. Gordon Strachan earlier on tonight on ITV when discussing the Luis Suarez affair: There are no morals in football. I have seen players who have committed all manner of heinous acts being enthusiastically applauded on to the field on returning after their bans.

This is not verbatim but offers an accurate reflection of what was said by the bold Strach.

    Good on ye, Gordon.

There would be quite a few who would not be resting quite as easy in their beds at night. Having said that, as we have found out re The LNS inquiry, they know that in some way shape or form their past “misdemeanours” will be covered up and they have nothing to fear.
