Chill your jets, excuse to fail

849

Chill your jets.  Far better to win and score five goals in a preseason friendly than to lose, but these games are all about improving fitness, the score is the least important aspect. Notwithstanding that, I’m pleased Teemu Pukki showed some form in front of goal. I don’t think Celtic would stand in his way if he found a potential new employer, but if he remains with us this season, his pace is likely to sit comfortably with the Ronny Deila model.

After missing the bulk of the last two Champions League campaigns through injury and Brazilian diving, news that Scott Brown will miss an extended period as a consequence of his hamstring injury is a blow to club and player.

It could have been worse. Celtic lost Scott for the bulk of last season’s Champions League on 1 October, when they were unable to compensate by tweeking the squad. Expectations are we will be without the player until October and we are only nine days into the transfer window. Lots of time to ensure we are at full strength when the meaty part of the season starts.

Brazil players and Phil Scolari turned up for yesterday’s semifinal wearing Naymar caps in the absence of their star striker. Their Excuse To Fail – emblazoned across their foreheads. Literally!

Add to the mix what can only be described as inappropriately enthusiastic anthem singing, while holding up the no. 10 shirt of, let’s remember, another player, not a fallen war hero, and you have all the ingredients for cloudy and unstructured thinking, instead of focus and awareness.

I don’t doubt this was all well-meaning but it was amateurish naivety. Players should turn up to a stadium with their game plan dominating their minds, not lamenting the loss of their best hope, having been consumed by national pride, one of mankind’s enduring fallacies. The Brazilian FA should immediately sack Roy Hodgson Big Phil.

Has all this Tour de Yorkshire business put you in the mood to get the bike out? If you why don’t you sign up for the Cardenden Cycle, which this year takes place on 6 September. You cycle from Celtic Park to the grave of John Thomson in Cardenden, Fife, a 64 mile journey. Full details are here.

If your cycling days are over, they are looking for drivers and stewards… if you’re available.

I was wondering the same on Twitter exchange.

It depends on the term of the loans I would think and I’m not sure if any are spelled out.

If repayment is to the Trust and not Rangers then do BDO have power over the Trusts?

If repayment is to Rangers but they have indemnified players against having to repay does that prevent BDO asking for repayment.

Then again was the indemnity against repayment or against having to pay the tax avoided?

If the latter and no indemnity against repaying it will depend on what power BDO can exert over the Trusts if the Trusts were the “lender”, but if the lender was Rangers then you would think BDO would see players as debtors and start clawing the money back.

I think it safe to assume that if the latter applies BDO would already be negotiating repayment plans with players and in the absence of any such news, unless the UTT acts as a new trigger to recoup loans, the players are safe behind the Trust wall.

As I understand it the money goes from the club/company to the trust and from the trust to the employee.

I can’t see how BDO can exercise any authority over the trusts. It’s not like the payments to them were gratuitous alienations.

  6. IF (in capitals) IF the huns EBT scheme was in fact a legal way to operate

why dont Celtic start this tomorrow, in fact why doesnt every company in the land start this tomorrow?

Auldheid – The loans are to be repaid to the Trust – but the terms of that repayment will be encompassed in the Trust deed, so it would be interesting to see what the Trust deed says.

Cheers I thought players were safe behind the Trust Wall.

So Rangers found a way to move from an illegal means of tax evasion to a legal one that stopped being legal in 2010 so they stopped using it.

Your right they cant influence deed

Where they and and do influence greatly is perception.

Any hun you talk to will take great delight in telling you the company and club story and that they are still the most successful team in Scotland.

Our perception and their perception and more importantly the meedjas perception are two totally different things.

In this there influence has been massive, much more successful than us internet bampots.

I didn’t read all the UTT report yesterday but am I correct in thinking that 3 or 4 of the cases are to be referred back to the FTT for review ?

  19. Auldheid

    It’s possible HMRC will appeal.

The problem is that, in theory at least, the first tier tribunal are regarded as the masters in deciding on the facts and the appellate stages can only deal with the way the law applies to the facts.

The FTT decided on the evidence they heard that the payments were genuine and the trustees were not just ciphers.

I can understand that Lord Doherty might have been wary about questioning that. I suspect a more senior bench might be more robust.

The FTT stank ( at least two of the three of them did). It was clear the cards were marked when the tribunal was allowed to sit in private. I still find that shocking.

The scheme which they operated was declared unlawful in 2010, but was technically legal during which time they “won” 4 leagues and some cups. Anyone with a sense of decency will still recognise that these trophies are tainted.

Surely even if the loans were to be repaid to the trust, there would have to have been a mechanism to then have them paid back FROM the trust TO the club? Otherwise how could it be a loan?

What did it say in their accounts?

Regardless of appeal or not – the scoddish meeja has gotten the the message out, and the only one that the mouth-breathers want to hear – victory.

  27. David Murray has crawled out from his lair and the MSM are queuing up to hear his views.

A question he should be asked is how his family trust is able to buy the valuable assets of the MIH empire at firesale prices and yet it won’t stump up a measly £20m odd to wrest his beloved club from the clutches of the spivs. While he is at it he could use his personal wealth to pay off the creditors of the last version of the club, ie the one he owned.

  28. The FTT stank ( at least two of the three of them did). It was clear the cards were marked when the tribunal was allowed to sit in private. I still find that shocking.

    _____________________________________________

When something like that is held in private, it is then known as a lodge meeting.

  29. Murray blinked first and bottled it. He sold the club to the first clown who would take it.

Now he is blaming HMRC. If he thought Rangers were not breaking the law he would have fought it not run away.
