Chill your jets, excuse to fail

849

Chill your jets.  Far better to win and score five goals in a preseason friendly than to lose, but these games are all about improving fitness, the score is the least important aspect. Notwithstanding that, I’m pleased Teemu Pukki showed some form in front of goal. I don’t think Celtic would stand in his way if he found a potential new employer, but if he remains with us this season, his pace is likely to sit comfortably with the Ronny Deila model.

After missing the bulk of the last two Champions League campaigns through injury and Brazilian diving, news that Scott Brown will miss an extended period as a consequence of his hamstring injury is a blow to club and player.

It could have been worse. Celtic lost Scott for the bulk of last season’s Champions League on 1 October, when they were unable to compensate by tweeking the squad. Expectations are we will be without the player until October and we are only nine days into the transfer window. Lots of time to ensure we are at full strength when the meaty part of the season starts.

Brazil players and Phil Scolari turned up for yesterday’s semifinal wearing Naymar caps in the absence of their star striker. Their Excuse To Fail – emblazoned across their foreheads. Literally!

Add to the mix what can only be described as inappropriately enthusiastic anthem singing, while holding up the no. 10 shirt of, let’s remember, another player, not a fallen war hero, and you have all the ingredients for cloudy and unstructured thinking, instead of focus and awareness.

I don’t doubt this was all well-meaning but it was amateurish naivety. Players should turn up to a stadium with their game plan dominating their minds, not lamenting the loss of their best hope, having been consumed by national pride, one of mankind’s enduring fallacies. The Brazilian FA should immediately sack Roy Hodgson Big Phil.

Has all this Tour de Yorkshire business put you in the mood to get the bike out? If you why don’t you sign up for the Cardenden Cycle, which this year takes place on 6 September. You cycle from Celtic Park to the grave of John Thomson in Cardenden, Fife, a 64 mile journey. Full details are here.

If your cycling days are over, they are looking for drivers and stewards… if you’re available.

    Coolmore Mafia, I’ve got a pal in Holland who believes everything that has happened to the hun in the past few years was contrived by the hand of your moniker’s devious members.

    HT, did you see my query about tickets for the first murrayfiled qualifier?

    I can call the ticket office later today but I thought the esteemed blog would give me the scoop.

    Looking for one ticket for my boy but I’m still in the dark over the SB ticket for myself and the possibility of getting two beside each other.

    Sorry I’ve just been watching the BBC coverage of Israel’s slaughter of innocents in Gaza, it reminded me of their coverage of Belfast, Derry and South Armagh in the 80/90s.

    Re your ticket query, does mini ACGR have a season book mate?

    The Mother

    I do not grudge them: Lord, I do not grudge

    My two strong sons that I have seen go out

    To break their strength and die, they and a few,

    In bloody protest for a glorious thing,

    They shall be spoken of among their people,

    The generations shall remember them,

    And call them blessed;

    But I will speak their names to my own heart

    In the long nights;

    The little names that were familiar once

    Round my dead hearth.

    Lord, thou art hard on mothers:

    We suffer in their coming and their going;

    And tho’ I grudge them not, I weary, weary

    Of the long sorrow–And yet I have my joy:

    My sons were faithful, and they fought.

    I listened to a report on the spikes on BBC Radio Scotland yesterday. A Glasgow City Councillor said, “No permission was asked for or granted. The council have given them a week to remove the spikes. If they do not comply, they will be fined 5,000 each day they remain.”

  18. Ellboy - I am Neil Lennon, YNWA. on

    Whatever the result of the BTC the undisputed fact is Oldco hid side letters from the SFA. Their players were registered falsely and illegally for years. Begs the question, why hide the letters if you thought all was above board?

    No they knew the EBT scheme was well dodgy and I’d like to know who if anyone within the SFA was aware of their existence at the time. As the testimony given to the LNS enquiry was laughable in this regard and stunk to high heaven.

    Do we play Dukla Prague tonight? Name still resonates down the years…..Gives me a good feeling, unlike that of the undead.

  23. Last nights game proved to me that maradona was a better player than messi is at the moment. Messi was almost completely anonymous last night. Yes I know messi was marked very tightly last night but maradona had that tight marking in almost very match he played.

    Also on van gaal’s decision to replace the keeper in the quarter final shoot out. I heard someone say on the radio that it was a psychological master stroke as the Costa Rica players would immediately be thinking this keeper is a penalty specialist and they lost confidence because of that. I can see the merits of that argument and agree with it to a fair extent. On the other hand the Argentina players would have drawn confidence from the fact that the Dutch keeper wasn’t replaced last night because in their minds they would have rightly been thinking this keeper isn’t as good as krul at saving pens. Also from the keepers point of view his confidence would have been shot to pieces because van gaal’ obviously didn’t trust him in the quarter final penalty shoot out.

    Reading your posts on the treatment of the poor, reminded me of the time I was in Brazil on a fact finding mission. One day we visited a Residence for homeless young people. The Director whom we had been scheduled to meet was not present as she was attending the funeral of a former guest who had been shot by the police on the Copa Cabana. It appeared that this happened frequently to homeless youth as big companies wanted the homeless youth removed from the fashionable areas because their appearance in these places was bad for business. Plus ça change…
