Ciftci, Stein, and the Audit

560

I’m pleased to read Ronny Deila ask for patience with Nadir Ciftci, the player needs a bit of support right now. Had Nadir knocked a goal or two in against our Icelandic opponents, Stjarnan, he would have been in a different zone at the moment, but he missed a few chances – not uncommon among players newly arrived at a club, and has since found opportunities limited by a domestic suspension.

Dundee United started training after Celtic, so Nadir was behind the curve during those games against Stjarnan. Without a full 90 minutes in a month, he will still have ground to make up when we resume after the international break, but he’ll hopefully feel the benefit of the work he’s put in on the training field in recent weeks.

Remember the Jock Stein Charity Match, which takes place at East End Park, Dunfermline on Sunday, kick-off 2pm. There’s a host of former players are playing, including Tom Boyd, Chris Sutton, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, Neil Lennon and Stiliyan Petrov, while several from the Hollywood set are also playing, including James McAvoy, Martin Compston and Gianni Capaldi.

Funds from the event go to the Celtic and Dunfermline Foundations. You can pay at the gate to mark the 30th anniversary of Jock’s passing. There’s going to be a lot of memories on that field.

Three years after football fans in Scotland became experts in insolvency law, we now have to become familiar with Serious Organised Crime (I had to look up what it was today). The Scottish Government suggest it involves “drugs, human trafficking and fraud”.

Fraud is one of the small number of crimes where a life imprisonment sentence can be imposed on someone convicted of the crime in Scotland (it carries a maximum of 10 years in England). Even if you were 100% innocent of all charges and the possibility of contamination from dubious characters, the sheer scale of the matters in hand would be an enormous worry.

My hunch is that conspiracies and criminal plans to subvert information are difficult to maintain under the weight of these charges.

I’ve been looking all morning but cannot find what I’m searching for. Does anyone know of an enterprise which operates in the shadow of a Serious Organised Crime investigation which has been able to raise money which didn’t come from the proceeds of Serious Organised Crime?

I’m sure the audit will be just fine.

The fear I have is that we now have a forward line that is no better than Aberdeen’s and that Ronny has now got to earn his corn. He needs to develop a cohesive, sparkling, defensively sound, attacking and winning unit with a young side that on paper has so many questions against it, it resembles a higher maths exam.

He might not just need to be an excellent coach – jury still out on that but he is the right type of coach – but also a miracle worker.

“I think we have some players on wages near Broonie’s- I’d suspect Commons and Johansen at least with VVD, Bitton and Gordon in a bracket just below. How many do we need at near Broony’s level before we have made a difference to the set-up?”

A defender, midfielder & striker so three but in all honesty, I don’t believe we need to offer wages at the level of Scott Brown to attract a better or more experienced standard of player.

Ok, when I said struggle I really meant hammered.

The combination of inexperience & Ronny failing to protect them by continuing to play 4-2-3-1 is the perfect recipe for disaster.

Hopefully I am proved entirely wrong, but I can see the very real possibility of us being embarrassed, away to Ajax, away to Fenerbahce & also at home to Fenerbahce. Molde will obviously prove our best opportunity, but even against them I can see us losing 2 or 3 away from home.

Many do it’s true but I suspect the successful clubs who play this way have the players that fit the system better. Just an opinion but I think we are lacking in so many departments, to be effective using this system at a higher level.

Fortunately the stats do not bear out your position.

We are on a much faster scoring rate than last year, having scored 16 in our first 6 games.

Almost 3 a game. Not a bad scoring rate you would admit.

Aberdeen BTW have scored only 9.

We also outscored them easily last season by 27 goals.

  28. Clashcity,

Great analysis of our playing formation. Still think we should have bought a striker, tho. In our lastgame Virgil moved up to assist the attack, he put in two knock on headers into the box. It caused all sorts of mayhem. Playing two forwards suits the players we have. Unfortunately our coach has looked at formations and has concluded that 4231 is the most difficult to defeat, which it is. However you have to have the players to play it. A striker who can both score and hold the ball up for the attacking midfielders. Do you see such a player on our books?

Ronnie plays 4231 with a pressing game. In Norway, he managed a mid table team. Histeam was hard to beat and his pressing game upset superior teams. At Celtic he is not managing a mid table team, he is at the top team by a country mile. There is no need to play a difficult to beat formation, nor to playa high pressing game. Opponents should be try this against us!

I think, sadly, we have a “textbook” manager who knows the theory but lacks the practice.

If we continue with his system we shall fail against moderate teams in Europe.

Don’t get me wrong…Ronnie has been good for Celtic, behind the scenes. He has modernised the club. Unfortunately, performance on the park falls short.
