Ciftci, Stein, and the Audit

560

I’m pleased to read Ronny Deila ask for patience with Nadir Ciftci, the player needs a bit of support right now. Had Nadir knocked a goal or two in against our Icelandic opponents, Stjarnan, he would have been in a different zone at the moment, but he missed a few chances – not uncommon among players newly arrived at a club, and has since found opportunities limited by a domestic suspension.

Dundee United started training after Celtic, so Nadir was behind the curve during those games against Stjarnan. Without a full 90 minutes in a month, he will still have ground to make up when we resume after the international break, but he’ll hopefully feel the benefit of the work he’s put in on the training field in recent weeks.

Remember the Jock Stein Charity Match, which takes place at East End Park, Dunfermline on Sunday, kick-off 2pm. There’s a host of former players are playing, including Tom Boyd, Chris Sutton, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, Neil Lennon and Stiliyan Petrov, while several from the Hollywood set are also playing, including James McAvoy, Martin Compston and Gianni Capaldi.

Funds from the event go to the Celtic and Dunfermline Foundations. You can pay at the gate to mark the 30th anniversary of Jock’s passing. There’s going to be a lot of memories on that field.

Three years after football fans in Scotland became experts in insolvency law, we now have to become familiar with Serious Organised Crime (I had to look up what it was today). The Scottish Government suggest it involves “drugs, human trafficking and fraud”.

Fraud is one of the small number of crimes where a life imprisonment sentence can be imposed on someone convicted of the crime in Scotland (it carries a maximum of 10 years in England). Even if you were 100% innocent of all charges and the possibility of contamination from dubious characters, the sheer scale of the matters in hand would be an enormous worry.

My hunch is that conspiracies and criminal plans to subvert information are difficult to maintain under the weight of these charges.

I’ve been looking all morning but cannot find what I’m searching for. Does anyone know of an enterprise which operates in the shadow of a Serious Organised Crime investigation which has been able to raise money which didn’t come from the proceeds of Serious Organised Crime?

I’m sure the audit will be just fine.

The matter, heard by Sheriff Sean Murphy, has been adjourned until Monday.

My opinion is in tune with yours, I don’t think we’re strong enough either.

I have real concerns going into the games with Ajax and Fenerbache and Ronny’s persistence in his favoured 4-2-3-1. For me it’s way too expansive particularly against any level above the SPFL. The loss of VVD is only going to compound that as, despite his poor defending of set pieces in Malmö, his pace and football intelligence often got us out of bother.

I think we’ve been incredibly naive and indeed negligent in not addressing the need for another (decent, not necessarily expensive) striker.

I don’t know who’s at fault but I’m still bloody angry about it.

Fenian Lamppost? I thought Jamesgang preferred rugger! :-)

  3. Personally i would try James Forrest as a striker, i mean look what happened to Ronaldo when he moved up front.

  4. The fundamental problem with the Celtic board is that they are in love with the Old Firm.

    Basically they are Bisashual

Just noticed we are giving away free tickets for next home game already.

    And we slagged the Huns.

The club said preseason it was going to do it a couple of times.

    Why not now?

We’ll be fine with what we have for now. They’ve been watching Ciftci in training for a couple of months, if he wasn’t up to it something would have been done. In an ideal world someone would have been brought in and it seems that we tried but the right deal wasn’t there. I’m sure we will add another striker in January.

  9. I have to laugh about us giving Cifti time to settle.

He has been in Scotland for nearly 2.5 years.

    He only moved from Dundee.

You know I agree about the open-ness at the back. The excellence of Denayer and VVD meant it was not an issue domestically last year . I hope Boyata and Simunovic get to gel in the same way.

I’m still chilled about missing out on Steven Fletcher. We do not rely on the front one to get the goals- this system shares them around so, as long as Johansen, Armstrong, Forrest, Commons, Rogic and Allen weigh in with goals we will be fine domestically. Another forward does not even begin to address the disparity with Fenerbache. AJax are not a frightening team but they will always be well drilled. They are 4 wins out of 4 in their league so far, scored 12 and conceded 0 but they have played 4 bottom half teams.

I think both Ciftci and Griffiths will do sufficiently well domestically but I have serious worries that they’re not up making the jump to European level.

January is too late if we have aspirations of progressing from this EL group.

Was gonna respond to point out that he needs time to get used to playing with new team mates etc, but….errr….we brought them from Dundee too! :-))

He does need time to settle, to adjust to his new team mates, and the style of play, and the expectations, and to actually play some matches to get some sharpness and match fitness. In pure footballing terms Celtic is on another planet from Dundee United.

Why not just make tickets cheaper … Sign a striker…

Do our transfer business early and get CL qualification sorted to create great buzz around the club.

Not surprising they pick now after another start of season balls up.they know what they have done.

    P.s

I never slagged the Huns myself about it much because I would gladly see Celtic give away tickets to schools , football clubs or unemployed fans to fill our ground. Nothing more depressing than thousands of empty seats.

I think the point about making the jump to Euro level applies to the entire team, not just the strikers. Personally i see it as tough group and don’t really expect to progress, it would be a bonus if we do. I think it’s an ideal opportunity to try different formations and tactics especially away from home with a view to next years CL qualifiers. Obviously the majority of supporters won’t take a bigger picture view on it if we don’t do well so it’s a tough one for Ronny and co.

  17. Big bad John took 11 games to score for the hoops and an entire year before he scored in Europe.

I think I’ll need him to have more than 4 starts in the hoops before I judge shift key.

I’d be proud to be a ‘Fenian Lampost’ but would always defer to the Fenian Pylon that is an tearmann! Now there’s a Bhoy and a half!

Then of course there’s the Fenian Python that is Sipsini. But that’s an altogether different urban myth!

Haven’t seen delaneys, ACGR, his creepy acolyte, Dena, minx, Richie or marspapa on here of late. And the wee young cheeky ghuy from Grangemouth.

Get back on, the lot of yous. I’m missing you all and others.

Yes the goals are shared around but that’s largely domestically. And that’s the problem, as I see it anyway.

The same system will be played home and away in Europe where, against a better standard of opposition, those who contribute to the goal tally (not the striker) in the SPFL are more concerned with defending, pressing and closing down. Ultimately, the responsibility of either holding the ball up or scoring will rely ( too heavily in my opinion) on a loan striker.

I doubt that either Ciftci or Griffiths are up to that hence my belief that we’ve been negligent.

Time will tell and please God I’m wrong.

  20. Proudbhoy,

As I said, the club said all along they were going to do it so why not on one of the two moved Sunday games?

Free tickets are great for the consumer.

If they had followed your suggestions it woulda cost the club and the fans money :))

In case anybody is interested Motherwell are playing a testimonial match for Keith Lasley on Saturday afternoon. Opposition one Bolton FC managed by one of our very own, Neil Lennon. Don’t know what Neil is thinking there. On Sunday of course Neil will back wearing the hoops over in Dunfermline for the tribute to Jock Stein.
