Ciftci, Stein, and the Audit

560

I’m pleased to read Ronny Deila ask for patience with Nadir Ciftci, the player needs a bit of support right now. Had Nadir knocked a goal or two in against our Icelandic opponents, Stjarnan, he would have been in a different zone at the moment, but he missed a few chances – not uncommon among players newly arrived at a club, and has since found opportunities limited by a domestic suspension.

Dundee United started training after Celtic, so Nadir was behind the curve during those games against Stjarnan. Without a full 90 minutes in a month, he will still have ground to make up when we resume after the international break, but he’ll hopefully feel the benefit of the work he’s put in on the training field in recent weeks.

Remember the Jock Stein Charity Match, which takes place at East End Park, Dunfermline on Sunday, kick-off 2pm. There’s a host of former players are playing, including Tom Boyd, Chris Sutton, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, Neil Lennon and Stiliyan Petrov, while several from the Hollywood set are also playing, including James McAvoy, Martin Compston and Gianni Capaldi.

Funds from the event go to the Celtic and Dunfermline Foundations. You can pay at the gate to mark the 30th anniversary of Jock’s passing. There’s going to be a lot of memories on that field.

Three years after football fans in Scotland became experts in insolvency law, we now have to become familiar with Serious Organised Crime (I had to look up what it was today). The Scottish Government suggest it involves “drugs, human trafficking and fraud”.

Fraud is one of the small number of crimes where a life imprisonment sentence can be imposed on someone convicted of the crime in Scotland (it carries a maximum of 10 years in England). Even if you were 100% innocent of all charges and the possibility of contamination from dubious characters, the sheer scale of the matters in hand would be an enormous worry.

My hunch is that conspiracies and criminal plans to subvert information are difficult to maintain under the weight of these charges.

I’ve been looking all morning but cannot find what I’m searching for. Does anyone know of an enterprise which operates in the shadow of a Serious Organised Crime investigation which has been able to raise money which didn’t come from the proceeds of Serious Organised Crime?

I’m sure the audit will be just fine.

I think the Celtic Board are away ahead of all of us, and at least one step ahead every time, including whether we’ll qualify or not, for the CL. I used to think our efforts were half hearted, now I don’t, and I believe the simple correlation between transfer fee, and the requisite wage for that player or this, is the key to our perceived lack of spend – better explained by Paul67, setting free the bears, and others

We signed Stuart Armstrong and GMS back in January, and that’s CL forward planning Celtic style, RD alluded to the CL at that time.

Nadir Ciftci is the result of previous bad buys by resident and non resident managers, and not another one ( yet ) despite what anyone’s opinion of him is.

John Reid said about staying in Scotland “ we are here to stay and are going nowhere “ He was dead right in more ways than one.

The business ( and it is run as a business ) can even see into the future sometimes with breath taking arrogance. One such time was to announce (my pet cringe, hate ) that the ground would only be half opened for the very first time in a Scottish Cup tie against the second best team in Scotland. Aberdeen came and won that was bad business decision, and the Celtic board even know when to shut half the stadium.

On the stadium it was forecast years and years ago on CQN that it would become ‘too big’, but it’s just another way of saying Celtic supporters come and go. It must have been way too big for those Lisbon Lions playing in front of 25,000 when 70,000 fitted in on a big Euro night.

We have fallen heavily from near the exit of Gordon Strachan, through Tony Mowbray and Neil Lennon, to Ronny Deila. The SPL matchday experience, sadly illustrates why the CL doesn’t come round that often, never mind for Celtic but even for Ajax.

I genuinely want to believe, supposing we never sign another striker again, that Celtic have put to bed, bad punts especially on strikers. The plan even on the back of 4-3 exit in Malmo needs revamped and I believe Paul67’s ‘no waif’s and stray’s’ in an example of how we’ll, try to qualify starting with the January window, but may looking further afield, with the board that step ahead again.

I sincerely hope that we did not defer signing a striker in order to give Cifcti a chance to prove himself.

Sadly, ( or not sadly ) depending on your opinion, I sincerely think we did.

We had bought Stefan Scepovic from the lesser euro leagues La Liga2 and hadn’t recovered our ‘£2m tops confidence’, we then spent a big part of the summer trying to offload him again, not managing it till deadline day.

I think a decision was made early doors in July to go SPL, with Nadir Ciftci, but I agree we’ll need to look further afield, especially if we can do it for Centre Backs.

The Ross McCormack @ 10million factor should not be discounted, and we should look a far away from that, as possible

  11. I have always felt that top teams (I still consider that we are a top team) should have 4 strikers in the squad. We only have 3 – one of those was not wanted. LG has picked up a few yellow cards recently, he will have to be carefull and avoid silly bookings – MIBs will be only too happy to issue them. Therefore I feel we not covered fully in the striker department. That said I would rather have no signing than a bad signing.

We are a stepping stone to crazy wages in better leagues for good aspirational players from most countries on the planet,we’ve had a decent turnover of spl to epl over the years.

Wages to transfer cost ratio should not be a problem.

So why are we buying from the spfl players who have had a good few seasons to catch our eye before now.

I may have it all wrong and I’ll happily stand corrected.

To my mind the problem is in the scouting, somewhere.

  15. Paul,

Is it possible, in light of recent events, that the mooted tactic of, “never interrupt your Enemy”, has been validated?

From early on in the hun fiasco, it has been suggested that skullduggery was afoot.

Surely it is not beyond the bounds of possibility that not only were Celtic aware of possible criminal activity, but also everyone else involved in the game.

There is no way on God’s Earth that DD did not know what they were up to. He has a history of playing a long game in righting any perceived wrongs visited upon him.

Could there have been a call from the relevant law bodies to stay off the RFC et al case, pending criminal investigation?

Well said. It would be a sad day for the blog if people were reluctant to air their views in case they were subject to a backlash from some of the more vitriolic posters who happened to be beating a different drum.

There is a small percentage of posters on CQN who will never praise the board regardless of what they do or fail to do.

The vast majority will praise the board when we think they have done something well and criticise them when we think they have done something wrong. Could the majority of posters be allowed to continue this without being called happy clappers, mineshafters, sheep, mugs, idiots etc and CQN could get back to being a bit more civilised

PLs not been feeding our host porkies has he?

  20. BOURNESOUPRECIPE @ 6:28 PM,

Well, I can’t disagree with any of that, it is very pragmatic, sound thinking.

Also it is great to see the back of the punts we’ve made in recent Seasons. Young Scottish guys with Potential, for me this is the way forward. Look how seamlessly GMS and Armstrong fitted into the team after they arrived. In fact, we looked a much poorer side in the games they were Cup tied for.

Also Ciftci will come good, he may not have scored goals but we have a much better shape and structure when he plays, no doubt the goals will come.

My UCL criticism comes not for the want to point a finger or to blame, but it’s our priorities.

Celtic can keep their head above water by producing and selling Wanyama, FF, VvD type players.

The attendances are an issue but you are correct, the Celtic Board are ahead of us – they know the New Rangers team will be playing in the Premier League next Season and the new Glasgow Derby will increase our attendances, demand for STs and our TV profile. Subsequently the revenues will be up and Turnover will improve.

So they don’t want to spend more money on the squad with a view of UCL qualification as the risk of failure would effect the sustainability of the Club and that’s true.

Yet for me, we need to look at things differently. There is only one way of Celtic halting the terminal decline we are in. That’s regular UCL Football, it doesn’t have to be every year but it has to be most years.

Okay we’ve struggled to do this, Ajax have struggled to do this. Yet Basel have managed it, they seem to be at that next level, in doing so they have performed at a consistent level with a sustainable business model.

It seems like I’m harping on, but I believe the maxim – if you don’t Plan for success, Prepare for failure – is apt. UCL participation I believe is achievable, more than that, I believe it is necessary, if we aren’t to become a Footballing has-been.

Now having said all that, in Ronny I have great faith and this squad can achieve great things, If we do it with what we’ve got, no one is going to be happier than me…, well maybe you:-)
