Ciftci’s industry, the great Czechoslovakia

775

BBC’s Jim Spence reports this morning that Dundee United have rejected a £900k bid from Celtic for striker Nadir Ciftci (23), as Ronny Deila continues his quest to recreate the all-conquering (cough) Dundee United team of 2014.

While Ciftci is clearly talented, this is an unexpected move.  He can hold the ball up and bring others into play but he never struck me as having Ronny Deila-type industry.  Not that he would be the first convert to perpetual motion.

With John Guidetti away and Stefan Scepovic yet to stake a claim, we’ve space for a couple of strikers.  It would be good to have at least one before the qualifiers.

Dukla Prague are one of those teams who my generation grew up hearing about.  They were one of the finest teams in Europe, with one of the world’s top players, Josef Masopust, who sadly died yesterday.  Masopust won the Ballon d’Or in 1962, after leading the great Czechoslovakia to the World Cup final that year, which they lost to Brazil.

He faced Celtic with Dukla in the semi-final of the European Cup in 1967, losing only once in the competition, at Celtic Park.  Czech football retains the potential to create great teams, but, denied access to TV deals available in neighbouring parts of the EU, they have been robbed of the ability to achieve meritocratic progression.

The passing of Masopust is a chance to celebrate a great player and team, and to regret what appears forever lost because of television.

Enjoying Phil MacGiollaBhain’s work with the Belfast Telegraph, laid bare in his blog of yesterday.  He includes scanned letters from the newspaper’s editor who regards it as “outrageous to suggest that I, or the Belfast Telegraph, would operate a blacklist of any form”, including one which includes Phil, despite how popular such a move would be in places.

    Very simplistically

Under MON , we paid big transfer fees & big wages to a small squad

Under WGS, we paid less transfer fees, lesser wages but to more players

Under NL , we paid small transfer fees , smaller wages but still had a big squad.

    Same with RD

I know we cant compete with top EPL, or even middle, but by running a tight squad of Bosmans, we could have a better player and a better chance of CL football.

We have been conditioned to accept we cant afford to compete with EPL wages and that getting to CL is a bonus.

Imho, we should be aspiring to being in CL group every season and debating whether we make last 16 or drop to Europa after Xmas.

The sad thing for me is that so many are prepared to accept and argue for the downsizing of talent and ambition at our club.

We have been spoon fed a diet of bull from our custodians for years.

There is no need for us to be transfer also rans.

    We have money.

Let’s invest it in our team for a change.

My goodness , the last time we did that we reached a European final!

  3. Every pre-season when some fans realise Messi and Ronaldo aren’t signing lawwell and the board get pelters, no superstars are coming to Scotland anytime soon so we need to buy players and try and turn them into better players.

It’s not that hard to work out so stop moaning about nothing HH

And its like talking to a pile of sawdust.

But, as soon as I get a minute….I will sack the board.

    They need it.

    Be good for them.

I will check that place out, we are only there for a few days so looks like I will just have to pay whatever it is as we want to have some sort of plan.

    Genius, what a cracking idea.

The supporters who fund Celtic, get to pick the signings.

    And why not indeed.

    Revolutionary idea:)

And can I count on your support, for election to the board:)

I don’t think he’s as good as the guys we already have – Stokes and Griffiths.

Sadly Utd will receive no fee if Ciftci joins Celtic. It turns out they have built up enough reward points from previous purchases.

  15. ExSlaemuirBhoy on

My concern regarding signing Cifti would be the length of ban coming his way, as a Utd player 2 game as a Celtic player 6 Month ?

That’s how it works here No ?

Go with the ticket stall in Times Square, we were ther on the same weekend as the NY marathon 5 years ago, so we got priced out due to demand. I had loyalty points with the hotel and the door man said he would look after me…..offers me a great deal of ” only 200 bucks ” for two stall tickets for Jerset Boys!! Be prepared to pay even for returned tickets….but it is one hell of a city.

We went to Noon mass in St Patrick’s Cathedral, it is broadcast live across the country, that was the best show in town as far as I was concerned. You will love the city, it is sports mad.

Do you think any republican who was involved in the movements cheered at the death of innocent civilians ?

    I would highly doubt it..

It has been called a dirty war many times … Top republicans have been outed as informers , how do we know that informers were not involved in these incidents under the orders from their pay masters ?

Propaganda war was massive in both sides.. Nothing would surprise me.

Was their no innocent people killed in the rebellions in the south of Ireland ?

Some of the finest men Ireland has produced were members of the Irish republican army. That’s my opinion anyway .. History has made Sean South and fergal o’hanlon heroes, they were part of a campaign with very very little support .. Probably less than those who support armed violence today.

Bobby sands had 100 thousand people behind his coffin. That will never be repeated in Ireland again.

Sadly the north of Ireland or Northern ireland as you like to call it is still part of Britain .

there is a ticket kiosk directly opposite the century 21 store a block from 911 memorial

if you intend going to memorial check out prices at kiosks close to your hotel before you go

they are usually quite competitively priced but it was 18months from I was there

Tir Na Nog is a good bar on Penn sq, (madison sq gardens to us,) then off to Jack Dempsies to watch the Celtic, the pub is on the same street as The Empire State Building. If wife is shopping, try Spring st, near little Italy, lots of boutique type shops and a great collection of pubs.

The north of Ireland, northern ireland, six counties. Occupied territories. Does it really matter. For the record I don’t like to call it northern ireland. It was just the term I typed earlier. …
