Ciftci’s industry, the great Czechoslovakia

775

BBC’s Jim Spence reports this morning that Dundee United have rejected a £900k bid from Celtic for striker Nadir Ciftci (23), as Ronny Deila continues his quest to recreate the all-conquering (cough) Dundee United team of 2014.

While Ciftci is clearly talented, this is an unexpected move.  He can hold the ball up and bring others into play but he never struck me as having Ronny Deila-type industry.  Not that he would be the first convert to perpetual motion.

With John Guidetti away and Stefan Scepovic yet to stake a claim, we’ve space for a couple of strikers.  It would be good to have at least one before the qualifiers.

Dukla Prague are one of those teams who my generation grew up hearing about.  They were one of the finest teams in Europe, with one of the world’s top players, Josef Masopust, who sadly died yesterday.  Masopust won the Ballon d’Or in 1962, after leading the great Czechoslovakia to the World Cup final that year, which they lost to Brazil.

He faced Celtic with Dukla in the semi-final of the European Cup in 1967, losing only once in the competition, at Celtic Park.  Czech football retains the potential to create great teams, but, denied access to TV deals available in neighbouring parts of the EU, they have been robbed of the ability to achieve meritocratic progression.

The passing of Masopust is a chance to celebrate a great player and team, and to regret what appears forever lost because of television.

Enjoying Phil MacGiollaBhain’s work with the Belfast Telegraph, laid bare in his blog of yesterday.  He includes scanned letters from the newspaper’s editor who regards it as “outrageous to suggest that I, or the Belfast Telegraph, would operate a blacklist of any form”, including one which includes Phil, despite how popular such a move would be in places.

One thing I would tell you to do is the bus tour buy a two or three day pass and keep the route map they give you …….. stay on the bus for whole tour on first day you can mark anything on map that interests you on second day jump on and off the bus as aoften as you like at stops you’ve highlighted. Staten island ferry , Ellis Island where highlights for me and are the last stop on one bus tour.

Top of the rock has brilliant views as has Empire state building ……some of the bus tours give free entry to Empire state building so if you want to do both but your bus tickets first

its all dependant on the kind of things your interested in

But one things for sure if your there for a few days you’ll be pushed to get much seen and you’ll want to go back its a cracking place

I think Ronny has seen that too much fat in the squad is unhealthy. Trimming the fat and becoming leaner can only help the club. The squad becomes more competitive and players more involved , money saved can be invested better. Hopefully losing 4-5 players from the squad would mean more money to spend on better bets. Maybe Saidy Janko is one, a better quality gamble.

  3. Eddieinkirkmichael- Lennybhoy very kindly passed on your details.

As I said earlier there will be a delay cos the bhoy who builds is on holiday – but it will be cash on delivery anyhoo! :-)

I’ve been looking at doing this myself in the near future….watch this space!

  4. the reaction to a reported bid for a player who will in all likelihood be a squad player, following on from the permanent signing of two players, all before the end of June (with the window not open until tomorrow) shows we’ve officially entered the summer silly season. Time to avoid weeks of headaches by logging out and ignoring the comments section of Paul’s excellent blog.

“A decade during which we have won 7 league championships, 7 domestic cups and reached group stage of CL 6 times, 3 of which we qualified for the last 16.”

    ….and you call that successful?

As a matter of fact, so do I but I must be wrong because I am reading quite a fair bit on this CELTIC site about how rubbish we are and how terrible a Chief Executive Peter Lawwell is and how our players are dreadful and how I must be stupid because I actually enjoy watching my team and think our players are very good and I believe our Manager has them playing very attractive and winning football.Indeed, I am so stupid I am actually looking forward to the new season and expecting that Ronny will continue with his improvement. What am I like, eh? I wish I was as perceptive as those guys who can see how terrible we really are even if it meant I would get no enjoyment out of watching Celtic.

I saw you make reference to some kit earlier this week.

I rarely watch TV, except for the news, and Celtic games.

I cancelled Sky last year, as i eventuall woke up to paying £50 a month for Burnley v Leicester is a waste of money ….When I did, I got put through to the dont leave dept, who offerred me various discounts, which was highly amusing, but bottom line Burnley v Stoke just doesnt do it for me

Can you explain what the bit of kit you refer to is, and how it works

  28. When Celtic indicated that they were looking to sign Joe McBride, my da wisnae impressed, “over the hill” he said, Joe had just turned 27 at the time. “Never made it anywhere else”. Motherwell was his 5th club. “Flopped down south”, went to Wolves for a substantial transfer fee and never scored for them. Was moved on to Luton who were after appearing in the FA Cup Final in the year Joe signed for them were on a downward spiral culminating in ending up in the 4th tier 5 years later. He was also allegedly injury prone.

Now this was the summer of 1965 and we had just won our 1st trophy in 7 years, 11 months, 3 weeks and 6 days. My da who had witnessed the St Mungo Cup, Coronation Cup, 1st Double in 40 years, the 7-1 game and could rhyme off the Empire Exhibition side like a litany similar to lads of my generation can with the “Hampden in the Sun” side, was still a bit gun shy in relation to the leather belts and success.

He had witnessed promising players like John Colrain aka the new John McPhail, Jim Conway signed in preference to both Joe and Gerry Baker. Paddy Turner from a record breaking ‘pride of nowhere” side and Hughie Maxwell signed after scoring all 7 goals for the Bairns against the Bully Wee, he also scored on his debut for the ‘tic after 10 seconds against his former side. However after that he only scored 1 more goal in a total of 8 appearances. One consolation was that his fee on his move to the Perth Saints helped fund Joe’s move tae us fae the ‘well.

Joe was signed and true tae ma da’s form got injured early doors in his 1st game, a friendly in the Isle of Man against the Fir Park side. However, the rest they say is history and Joe is now a bona fide Celtic legend.

No bad for an over-the-hill, much travelled, injury prone centre forward.

It was a dreich Saturday night when Arthur Montford announced that Celtic had just signed John “Dixie Deans”, “whit” could have been the response in Celtic households around the country as the sounds of glasses and cups hit the floor.

Here was a presumed over weight centre with a poor disciplinary record, he was serving a 6 match ban at the time. Jock so disappointed in his side that lost to the Maryhill Magyars in the LC Final that he went out and signed a former goalie who had shined for the Buddies in a LC Semi and a centre to spice up the inept forward line including Dalglish, Hood and Macari who by all accounts had enough chances in the 2nd half of that game to overhaul the 4 goal deficit.

Rumour had it that Jock wanted Drew Jarvie fae Airdrie, Donald Ford fae the Jambos or John Duncan from the “City of Discovery” but neither sides were reluctant to enhance Jock’s magnificent squad, so Dixie it was.

Dixie who scored on his eventual debut at Firhill, in a forward line that contained Dalglish, Hood and Macari, and the same season missed “that” penalty against Inter went on to an amazing career with the bhoys.

He is also the only player in Scottish football history to twice score a hat trick in a major cup final and also the six goals he struck in a defeat of the Harry Wraggs is a post-war record for goals scored in a single game.

He was signed 5+years after Joe for approx 5 grand less.

No bad for another non marquee signing.
