Ciftci’s industry, the great Czechoslovakia

775

BBC’s Jim Spence reports this morning that Dundee United have rejected a £900k bid from Celtic for striker Nadir Ciftci (23), as Ronny Deila continues his quest to recreate the all-conquering (cough) Dundee United team of 2014.

While Ciftci is clearly talented, this is an unexpected move.  He can hold the ball up and bring others into play but he never struck me as having Ronny Deila-type industry.  Not that he would be the first convert to perpetual motion.

With John Guidetti away and Stefan Scepovic yet to stake a claim, we’ve space for a couple of strikers.  It would be good to have at least one before the qualifiers.

Dukla Prague are one of those teams who my generation grew up hearing about.  They were one of the finest teams in Europe, with one of the world’s top players, Josef Masopust, who sadly died yesterday.  Masopust won the Ballon d’Or in 1962, after leading the great Czechoslovakia to the World Cup final that year, which they lost to Brazil.

He faced Celtic with Dukla in the semi-final of the European Cup in 1967, losing only once in the competition, at Celtic Park.  Czech football retains the potential to create great teams, but, denied access to TV deals available in neighbouring parts of the EU, they have been robbed of the ability to achieve meritocratic progression.

The passing of Masopust is a chance to celebrate a great player and team, and to regret what appears forever lost because of television.

Enjoying Phil MacGiollaBhain’s work with the Belfast Telegraph, laid bare in his blog of yesterday.  He includes scanned letters from the newspaper’s editor who regards it as “outrageous to suggest that I, or the Belfast Telegraph, would operate a blacklist of any form”, including one which includes Phil, despite how popular such a move would be in places.

If Ciftci is the answer to our striking problems,I’ll be very surprised.

Another fine game at the women’s World Cup there Eh? . . I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this tourney. It might not be technically as good as the men’s version of the game and it’s much less physical. However it’s been entertaining in my eyes. Some fabulous play and all very much in the spirit of ‘the beautiful game’. Well done to all. .

Of course, the lack of a good offensive song and pyrotechnics is bit of a shame, but I’m not holding that against them. ;-)

Reading the blog over the last few days. I must say, as ever some excellent debate over signings on the go or speculative. I must interject a wee but however on the Gary Hooper chat. I know Gary and his family a wee bit. I don’t have any inside knowledge other than the facts we all probably know he misses us terribly. So I’m probably a wee bit biased when it comes to him.

For some to suggest that Leigh Griffiths, decent as he might be, is anywhere near the footballer Gary Hooper is, is complete nonsense. Not even worth arguing about. At Celtic Gary played 138 games and scored 82 goals. He’s never been replaced. Yes, he asked for money that was above Scott Browns wage, and he probably did want a crack at the Prem. It’s not worked out for him. Since he’s left my Bhoy has still put him in his FIFA (Xbox) Celtic team. That’s speaks volumes to me. He’s a proper Goalscorer and at 27, if he’s up for it, it’s a no-brainer for me.

Aiden McGeady? I love Aiden McGeady. I don’t think coming back here is a great move for him or Celtic. In saying that. If Ronny sanctions it he’s convinced and I trust Ronny implicitly.

Since I last posted here. The FAC campaign has reached a bit of a stalemate.

The promised review by the SNP has been whitewashed as Im sure you all know. I had the unfortunate pleasure of being in Holyrood (the people’s parliament) as Paul Wheelhouse and the SNP gave it 20 minutes of their time and blatantly lied about the review, the Stirling University dissertation and FAC.

The lack of opposition to this new SNP cult is frightening. The facts are there for all to see on this issue. We must fight this.

This blog is where intelligent Celtic supporters post. It’s time you all stepped up to the mark. 100,000 new SNP members. Do you not care about civil liberties?

  4. Fact is, in my opinion. This act could be repealed tomorrow.

The SNP are populists . . If Celtic PLC really wanted it gone they could come out stronger. If the Celtic support wanted it gone the would say. No away games till its gone.

Alas. . The militancy of our support left a long time ago

    ….and you call that successful?

As a matter of fact, so do I but I must be wrong because I am reading quite a fair bit on this CELTIC site about how rubbish we are and how terrible a Chief Executive Peter Lawwell is and how our players are dreadful and how I must be stupid because I actually enjoy watching my team and think our players are very good and I believe our Manager has them playing very attractive and winning football.Indeed, I am so stupid I am actually looking forward to the new season and expecting that Ronny will continue with his improvement. What am I like, eh? I wish I was as perceptive as those guys who can see how terrible we really are even if it meant I would get no enjoyment out of watching Celtic.

  16. It’s been a short close season, thankfully.

Our first competitive game is barely two weeks away.

I don’t expect much of a test from the cod fishermen, but hopefully we will kick on from last season.

As entertaining as the Govan Pantomime Company have been, it’s time to concentrate on Celtic, despite the best efforts of the MSM to convince us there are two big teams in Glasgow.

Partick Thistle must be the other one.

I am sure the two Dundee United guys are raring to stake their claim to regular first team football. Two possible star acquisitions in the making I think.

The addition of a central defender and another striker, Hooper perhaps, alongside Griffiths, Stokes and Scepovic should see us win the title comfortably, and challenge in Europe, either in CL or Europa.

Either will satisfy me. And the Europa may even earn us some vital coefficient points.

Is anyone from the development squad ready to step up?

New season, old aspirations, same excitement.

I’m sure we all just want to be entertained. We’re getting that from Ronny. Despite the Celtic supports differences at times we’re all behind the man now and that can only be a good thing . . Bring it on.

Weir and Warburton cannot possibly be any worse than the previous management squad so they may manage a second place finish and a decent run in the Petrofac.

So why are the Follow Follow Faithful walking away?

Can it be that they are tired and weary and wary after their long fruitless journey?

Or have they had an epiphany and seen through the Glib and Shameless Rooienek?

Fool me once shame on you. Shame me twice shame on me.

    I understand the dichotomy.

My father was both a devout Catholic and a committed supporter of Abe Moffat.

He was never able to sufficiently explain this to me when I questioned him on it in my teenage years when I was steeping myself in the Church.

It was a gut sentiment, which I likened to my illogical support of Celtic during the late 50s and early 60s.

“Part of the American mindset comes from the fact that the US was formed through the racist murder of indigenous people. The reason that whole country is such a horror story is that the entire thing is built on an Old Indian Graveyard. I worry that perhaps white America wants to believe that its racial fault lines only run as deep as the Confederate flag. Hence the current uproar at names of southern civil-war generals being on street signs while the faces of slave owners are still on the currency.”
