Ciftci’s industry, the great Czechoslovakia

775

BBC’s Jim Spence reports this morning that Dundee United have rejected a £900k bid from Celtic for striker Nadir Ciftci (23), as Ronny Deila continues his quest to recreate the all-conquering (cough) Dundee United team of 2014.

While Ciftci is clearly talented, this is an unexpected move.  He can hold the ball up and bring others into play but he never struck me as having Ronny Deila-type industry.  Not that he would be the first convert to perpetual motion.

With John Guidetti away and Stefan Scepovic yet to stake a claim, we’ve space for a couple of strikers.  It would be good to have at least one before the qualifiers.

Dukla Prague are one of those teams who my generation grew up hearing about.  They were one of the finest teams in Europe, with one of the world’s top players, Josef Masopust, who sadly died yesterday.  Masopust won the Ballon d’Or in 1962, after leading the great Czechoslovakia to the World Cup final that year, which they lost to Brazil.

He faced Celtic with Dukla in the semi-final of the European Cup in 1967, losing only once in the competition, at Celtic Park.  Czech football retains the potential to create great teams, but, denied access to TV deals available in neighbouring parts of the EU, they have been robbed of the ability to achieve meritocratic progression.

The passing of Masopust is a chance to celebrate a great player and team, and to regret what appears forever lost because of television.

Enjoying Phil MacGiollaBhain’s work with the Belfast Telegraph, laid bare in his blog of yesterday.  He includes scanned letters from the newspaper’s editor who regards it as “outrageous to suggest that I, or the Belfast Telegraph, would operate a blacklist of any form”, including one which includes Phil, despite how popular such a move would be in places.

Nothing to do with Murdoch so don’t start that old nonsense

Its a fact, support for the provos was generally limited to the working class nationalist enclaves in Northern Ireland.Outside of that nobody wanted to know, people who were broadly sympathetic to the nationalist/republican cause were repulsed by the killing of civilians. Its over now thank god and it achieved what exactly

Northern Ireland is still in the UK,no spin doctor can unspin that

  2. So do I Ron. I never seek to start a debate on it but when you see what perceives as misrepresentation there is a little gremlin inside of you insisting you respond.

  3. No Celtic supporter I know hates Lawwell, many don’t trust him or the board, many believe there are alternative ways to make our club successful.

Hate is a very very strong emotion labelling someone a hater is vicious and deserves a response of similar gravity, I believe butt-plug is less hateful and more descriptive of people who refuse to consider the arguments on their merit.

    Canamalar,

The indisputable proof of a Party, any Party’s support in Ireland or any country, is how it’s representatives do at the Ballot Box.

The figures are there, if you wish to research them.

Hmmm………not sure why you think he had everything, to such an extent your excellent knowledge, led me to Google his record.

MAF has had eleven clubs so far and hasn’t been prolific at any of them, so he sure passes the wee flaw and you end up a Celtic ‘striker’ test. He managed one goal in five appearances at Doncaster.

Possibly the ‘softest’ 6ft striker I’ve seen play at CP, he didn’t like it in the middle, and wanted to drift wide constantly, he couldn’t play with his back to goal, and therefore rarely held the ball up, for lay offs. As soon as he arrived Celtic he got injured, and disappeared for months.

He cost twice as much as we’ve paid in the last four or five years for a striker and even Tony Mowbray eventually dropped his talisman, just before his own demise.

I think my poor signing is worser than your poor signing.

    Hail Hail

  6. wits,

It’s hardly old none sense is it considering the state of the countries he has influence.

However, you’ve still no provided and serious information to support your OPINION and that’s all I asked for, don’t you have any ?

  7. Winning Captains.

You mentioned 10 days or so ago that Celtic were about to sign Sevco’s outstanding young player. Any news? Has this happened yet? Maybe I missed it.

We cant have a retrospective opinion poll for peoples attitudes in the 70s and 80s

I lived through period and believe me there was minimal support for the provos, outside of the their core areas which I have already alluded to.

They got no electoral support, every opinion poll of the era showed very little support for their activities

Why is this a surprise for you

What planet were you on during this period

  10. ttt,

What evidence is provided at the ballot box ?

I’m no following you here, the free state ballot boxes were being filled by people worrying about their own local problems, if no one in the free state was that bothered or as wits implies condemned the IRA as murderers of the innocent, or that most of the Irish people don’t support their war then the Irish govt wouldn’t have been involved in the peace process and given up their claim for sovereignty, no ?

  11. SFTB

Here is something that will surprise everyone I suspect.

It’s not Sky who dictate that a game is moved to black out 3 to 5 broadcasts and so KOS. It is the SFA and FA that dictate that games cannot be broadcast live in the UK between 2.45 and 17.15.

Burnley Chairman Bob Lord raised the point in the 60s, yes the bloody 60s, and the argument then was that broadcasting games live meant crowds in the area of would be affected because their fans would not attend live, preferring to watch another club play on TV. It’s a new broadcasting world now and time the blackout was revisited.

Now showing a Celtic game between 3 and 5 live might affect Celtic”s attendance but I cannot see it having a greater adverse effect on say Kilmarnock playing at home whose resident who support Celtic don’t go to Rugby Park anyway.

I think the need for a black out period might come from UEFA or even FIFA but the timing is up to the national associations.

Why the SFA align with the FA who do Scottish football no favours mystifies me.

I think it is Celtic who fear 3 to 5 broadcasts more than the other clubs BUT (and I’m on my hobby horse here) if we bought the right to view rather than a seat to view and charged the same for that right AND Celtic supporters saw it as a crime against their fellow supporters to watch without paying the same price then the way around empty seats can be found.

I think the widening use of Kodi will hasten that new thinking and I am assured Celtic are well aware of the threat.

First things first though- make the blackout period in Scotland 5pm to 7pm which cuts out the EPL Sat evening game. I think it is in the power of the SFA and SPL to make such a change and see if Sky will show Scottish games in the 3 to 5 slot or are intent on ramming the EPL down our throats.

Signing any striker tends to be one huge gamble and football is littered with o-called goaladors who fail…

Totally agree with your opening sentence. How many Clubs have spent £12, £20 million on a Striker and they have flopped…

One from the history of the South Side Club springs to mind…

    No guarantees unfortunately.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  13. To clarify a sentence above..

It’s not Sky who move games from a 3pm KO. It is a UK football rules that insists on a 3 to 5 blackout and as Sky cannot broadcast then the KO time gets changed.

  14. wits,

I’ve only asked you to support your opinion with evidence, which you can’t do, worse your using terms like “FACT” on your interpretation of the opinions of your immediate social group and nothing more, I expect the subject was hardly discussed during the time because most people were being told by the meeja that support of a united Ireland was not fashionable.

If the Irish did not support the war why did they not give up the claim to sovereignty ?

Will the vast majority refuse to accept the 6 counties as part of a unified Ireland ?

No I doubt, so why would they want to accept

  15. Just me being mental again.

When Phil MacGiollaBhain, whose writings I enjoy, lay down with the Belfast Telegraph, he must have known that rising with fleas was a fairly predictable outcome.

  16. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

    Can,

The ballot box reflects the moods and opinions of the electorate.

For you to dismiss the Irish electorate as only concerned with “their own local problems” is derisory.

As WITS said, violence against fellow citizens was deplored by the vast majority of the population.

When Britain and PIRA began to sue for Peace, this process was facilitated by courageous people from across the divide.

This process was greatly enabled by the generosity of the Irish people, who voted via Referendum, to cede sovereignty; which was a major stumblib block to the Peace Process.

Central to all of this was a man who was at the beginning of the Civil Rights process and who ultimately brought Sinn Fein in from the cold.

John Hume was a colossus of a politician who was the one constant voice for over thirty years, but who now appears to have been airbrushed from memory.

Think on before you insult the Irish people.

  17. Audheid,

I was thinking about that the other day and thought a very good way for Scottish football to get a better deal is to end that agreement. Scottish games being shown a 15:00 would have an impact and I expect the EFA would make an offer.

Could this possibly have anything to do with the supposedly political involvement Celtic Board had nothing to say about Haughey and John Reid dragging Celtic’s name into the Independence Referendum?

  19. bournesouprecipe @ 18:34,

The stats can be deceiving, remember that foul he committed on the “New Years” game when he had the audacity to jump up at Rangers far post and head in from two yards.

Of course it was tongue-in-cheek, but I thought he managed to get himself in good positions and created chances for himself and others. His end product and finishing was woeful though. Like the poor mans Kenny Miller.

He wasn’t worth the money. No doubt.

Though this record attempt shows how serious he took his training.

Paul Le Guen (French footballing aristocrat ) (© Daily Record) scouted Filip Sebo.

“Šebo’ is often chanted in a humorous manner by football fans in Scotland when an opposition player hits a wayward shot. This is due to Filip’s perceived lack of prowess in front of goal during his time at the Rainjurs”

  22. Canamalar,

Hate is a very strong word if used in its truest form, however it’s mainly used as a “venting” mechanism.

Do school kids really hate school ?

Does Kevin the teenager really hate his parents?

I do agree with you in the respect it shouldn’t be used in a personal context, indeed many families were brought up many moons ago to hate ( sorry extremely dislike ) the word hate.

I suppose butt plug can be a less offensive put down to any smart ass, but personally and no disrespect intended, I think the whole discussion is just a pain in the backside.

Thank you that was all I was asking for, I’ll shut up now corrected.

    ttt,

There was no disrespect directed at the Irish people and you know it but I expect nothing less from you when you don’t want to discuss the subject properly, we’ve been here before.

I simply asked for evidence, I got that from someone who understood what I asked for.

I’m satisfied by what was provided (thanks again Ann) I’m never satisfied by people telling me what the “facts” are without any supporting evidence, opinions are rarely “facts”.

  25. Well, that’s my North American trip over as I fly back home tonight, it has been almost five weeks and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, the people I have met new friends and old have been fantastic, and seeing my kids and grand children was special and it will be a hard goodbye later.

So to all the people from CQN I met over here thank you all so much for your hospitality, we really are more than a club, and I will be back next year to see you all again, so it’s sad lo leave but you do weary for the old sod of Scotland, Hail Hail.
