Ciftci’s industry, the great Czechoslovakia

775

BBC’s Jim Spence reports this morning that Dundee United have rejected a £900k bid from Celtic for striker Nadir Ciftci (23), as Ronny Deila continues his quest to recreate the all-conquering (cough) Dundee United team of 2014.

While Ciftci is clearly talented, this is an unexpected move.  He can hold the ball up and bring others into play but he never struck me as having Ronny Deila-type industry.  Not that he would be the first convert to perpetual motion.

With John Guidetti away and Stefan Scepovic yet to stake a claim, we’ve space for a couple of strikers.  It would be good to have at least one before the qualifiers.

Dukla Prague are one of those teams who my generation grew up hearing about.  They were one of the finest teams in Europe, with one of the world’s top players, Josef Masopust, who sadly died yesterday.  Masopust won the Ballon d’Or in 1962, after leading the great Czechoslovakia to the World Cup final that year, which they lost to Brazil.

He faced Celtic with Dukla in the semi-final of the European Cup in 1967, losing only once in the competition, at Celtic Park.  Czech football retains the potential to create great teams, but, denied access to TV deals available in neighbouring parts of the EU, they have been robbed of the ability to achieve meritocratic progression.

The passing of Masopust is a chance to celebrate a great player and team, and to regret what appears forever lost because of television.

Enjoying Phil MacGiollaBhain’s work with the Belfast Telegraph, laid bare in his blog of yesterday.  He includes scanned letters from the newspaper’s editor who regards it as “outrageous to suggest that I, or the Belfast Telegraph, would operate a blacklist of any form”, including one which includes Phil, despite how popular such a move would be in places.

It was straight across from the aquarium, I never tried it so can’t advise on quality or price but even a coffee and look at the menu and what people are eating might be an idea.

He is the Right man, in the Right place, at the right time.

His stated football philosophy chimes with Celtic’s.

It is based on reality, not on the disgruntled whims of “Ah wants”.

  14. Rioskorrie, I know I’m biased but I still believe West Cork is the most beautiful part of the Country. Skibbereen, Bantry and over the County Bounds into Kerry. Kenmare and do the ring past Sneem,Parknisilla and as Wits suggested the Dingle Penninulsa. Cross Shannon on Tarbert Car Ferry. Lots of nice spots up the Clare coast plus great Traditional Music. You can get a Ferry out to the Aran Islands from Doolin. On up to the Burren and Ballyvaughan and into Galway. Galway itself is a lovely City and some great spots nearby, Connemara, Clifden. Next May, up through Louisburgh to Croagh Patrick and the Famine Monument just opposite (was there a couple of hours ago) on to Westport a nice wee town where I am sending this post from. Achill Island which can be reached by bridge about 30 kilometres from here. If you still have time then its on to Sligo, Donegal and across to Derry. However you can also cut straight across the midlands to Dublin, about 3 hour journey.

  15. Signing any striker tends to be one huge gamble and football is littered with o-called goaladors who fail. It even took king Henrik a while before he developed into the wonder striker he eventually became. Chris Sutton was a top striker at Blackburn Rovers when they were playing in the top division of English football but could not do it when he moved to Chelsea. Scepovic banged in 27 goals in Spain but has failed so far in the SPL.

Just look at Daryl Murphy who could not do it at Celtic Park but after his move to the Championship finished the top scorer in English football last season..

I have not seen much of the Dundee Utd lad Cifti but at 23 he is a young guy learning his trade and is a proven goalscorer. John Collins has played the game at the highest level and he obviously sees this lad doing a good job for Celtic.

The Curragh is a wonderful place, I know the golf club very well, it’s the oldest course in Ireland I believe, and imo, one of the best.

No many decent bars in the area tho, or none that I found.

I also got Genesis. Really good. I got it as part of a repository called Lambda. Which also included an add on called Phoenix. It does all sky and BT sports channels.

Sportsdevil (a single add on) is also good.

My current problem is I can’t stream live sports to TV via Chromecast. Works on my smartphone tho, so it’ll do. Gonna tty kodi on windows tonight and see if that works
