cinch merely the fodder in war against SPFL chiefs

796

The business model of the SPFL’s new sponsor, cinch, is to sell cars directly to the public, cutting out the dealer network.  Newco’s chairman owns a large car dealership which sponsors Newco (although it is not a shirt sponsor).

Newco have refused to comply with the SPFL contract by adding the cinch logo to players’ sleeves and elsewhere.  They claim compliance would break an existing commercial deal, presumably with their own chairman, but have refused to provide evidence of any existing deal to the league.

League and club sponsors often conflict.  While the SPFL was sponsored by Ladbrokes, Celtic had Dafabet blazoned across their chest and Newco had their own gambling partner.  Newco’s position appears to be that any club with a pre-existing agreement with any one of its partners can veto a league sponsorship deal. Quite a thing, with 42 clubs, some of which have 20 commercial sponsorship partners.

It is always possible that the SPFL’s rules are poorly drafted on such matters, the SFA were able to exploit what appeared to be a clear rule before, but the League have examined their position and have escalated the issue.  Yesterday, chairman Murdoch MacLennan wrote to all 42 clubs, stated the league’s position and informed clubs he had referred the matter to the SFA’s arbitration process.

If you think this all seems a bit contrived, you are not alone.  Why stand and fight on such a puny hill?  Newco are not the private fiefdom of their chairman, he is not Cnut (be careful), able to turn the tide against cinch, so why antagonise every non-compliant club in the league?

Newco want rid of MacLennan and especially SPFL chief exect Neil Doncaster.  Neither will do their bidding.  If the club can find a contractual oversight, it gives them grounds to call for their resignations, again.

There are other mattes at play; step forward Malmo manager, Jon Dahl Tomasson, who yesterday alluded to the matter we discussed in our State of the Club blog 10 days ago.  Newco need Champions League money more acutely than oxygen itself.  Should the wheels come off the white charger tonight, you can expect conflicts on every corner.

I never get what is it about people who think they are too special to follow rules.  There is a want about them.  Are we going to see pyros from the Newco directors’ box next?  Seems logical.  Fight The Man, even if The Man is just a salaried someone, responsible for converting advice or strategy onto structure.

Reading between the lines of one of the court bloggers tweets I get the impression there might be some who would welcome a discussion about the appropriateness of the term innocent in regard to some of the parties involved, but that for one reason or another such a discussion is unlikely to occur.

The reason why the amount was decided by the body accused of wrongdoing is because in civil cases it is the right of the accused to offer an amount in settlement prior to going to court.

Green was entitled to decline the offer and take it to a judge.

It’s called settling out of court.

But I’m sure you knew that.

  3. Jimtim,

Why are you listening to the Media concerning Edouarde. They know nothing. Why would they.

Just let’s see what happens.Just under 3 weeks to go of the window. We know the MAD scramble at the end.

I have said before18 to 20 million,is dirt cheap in the EPL for a striker.Especially with his pedigree.

to tell you the truth , I would have happily lost my bet last night to see the huns lose .

Every tim on here must have a real spring in his step this morning … well most of us anyway !

  5. Me too.

My prediction of Malmo to win 3-2 was a bit of greed on my part, however I didnt mind that Bet going down, as long as the huns got GUBBED…Thats the MAIN ISSUE.

  9. Corkcelt,

With respect, we are not missing the point. We have all the facts the club has given us and we are acutely aware of the Strachan influence at Parkhead.

    Change, what change ?

This is jobs for the boys and a board influencer, eg what does WGS know about Ladies football ? What will he learn in 3 months ?

Apart from the obvious, how do you square the conflict of interest which is patiently clear.

I do not know about Celtic but the company that employs me would not tolerate a similar scenario.

It would fail our ” Code of Conduct ” ethics.

Are you seriously asking what does Gordon Strachan know about women’s football? A professional who has been in the game at the top level for 50 years?

I have been playing/watching football for 60 years. Are you telling me I’ll need to take a crash course before I can go and watch a women’s football match?

Also, Celtic contacted Dundee FC and received permission to offer the role to Strachan. The idea that the club and Strachan went behind Dundee’s back is frankly risible.

  15. No issue with Strachan coming in,but 3 months? He might have a review, another guy comes in full time and doesn’t agree with it? Been saying for a while that Lennoxtown, and coaching/ developing players is a job on it’s own,and whoever’s in charge, should work hand in hand with the manager.

  19. Malmo — OMG they were very poor.

    The lacked stamina and conditioning.

They were a danger to themselves when they had the ball.

Some of their play was pure pantomime — look out he’s behind you.

And yet / and yet …

When they managed to crawl their way into the attacking third all they needed was one good pass and they had a chance.

First one — RC level pass plus a great strike.

Second one — slow motion play in the box with a great near post finish.

TFOD2.1 — they are so limited it hurts.

  20. Gordon Strachan’s remit has nothing to do with the manager/head coach. He is reporting on things that are the remit of the CEO. Any DoF or any other type of football operations appointment will not have a say on those things that are the sole domain of the CEO, por cierto

The review will form the basis for the recruitment of a Director of Football, or whatever the job title. Like in any industry or business, if a candidate for the job doesn’t agree with the remit, he doesn’t get the job. Simple.

  23. CORKCELT on 11TH AUGUST 2021 10:08 AM

    exactly, and well put.

if people dont understand what the “consultant” is being asked to do, and it is clearly spelt out in the press release, then what can you do,

there is no conflict of interest either,

how does our academy affect how Dundee perform their operations. none

  24. If, and only if, Eddy wants to run down his contract then would the best option be to let him go out on loan? Get his wages paid elsewhere and allow us to get in a replacement. He needs to play and he needs a new challenge which motivates him to get out of first gear. In an ideal world, in my opinion, Eddy, Griff and Ajeti would all be out the door this month with a minimum of two forwards coming in.

  25. Jack Hendry saying today that Celtic target,Henry,is a good player, goalscorer, hold up player, but not too quick.

    Oh,did ye,Aye.

  26. With respect to you Greenpinata, I totally disagree with you.

WGS has worked extensively in Football for many years, his knowledge of Football & the background set up has to be up there with the best.

Also he knows the Club and he quite obviously loves the Club.

Throwing out the Jobs for the boys cliche is a simplistic reaction.

Obviously Strachan wanted to do this job, & Dundee didn’t see it as a conflict of Interest & agreed to it.

I was mildly surprised that they did agree but you don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

Most of us here have spent our lifetime working with various Companies & we all have different levels of knowledge & expertise on how these appointments work.

Dom is a new CEO determined to make his own mark & to be successful at Celtic, there is absolutely no evidence or logic in imagining he would be party to a nonsensical jobs for the boys appointment.

  27. someone mentioned broony subbed on the 44th minute at weekend for aberdeen.

he actually came on for an injured haynes, and was given glowing reports for changing the game in aberdeens favour with his organisation and skills.

glass said broony wants to play every minute of every game, and probaly could.

  28. Gordon Strachan’s remit has nothing to do with the manager/head coach. He is reporting on things that are the remit of the CEO. Any DoF or any other type of football operations appointment will not have a say on those things that are the sole domain of the CEO, por cierto

The idea would be that GS would somehow or another make Celtic a better Club, otherwise why bother.

If Celtic improve, for whatever reason, that is to the detriment of all other clubs in the league.

No one is so stupid that they cannot understand that point.

  30. One other thing on WGS advisory role.

Who more than him, would know the background and culture of the Academy, having had Tommy Burns as a coach and mentor, surely he shared his vision.
